Title: VOTE FOR Finally Finished!!! (Profiles)
Post by: taiidantomcat on December 02, 2013, 04:01:40 AM
Congratulations! Please post your finished profiles here  :)

With so many profiles, I decided to go for a vote of the artist who made them rather than the profiles themselves. Happy to see so much finished stuff from everyone. Dy isn't on the poll because he was just a couple days late and I want to be fair. Having said, that DY, I am super happy you finished and I love your ship!  :)

I guess I'll start us off.  I still have a couple more I plan on finishing, though.  I'll start off by posting the links to the build threads to the various build threads first.

When the Dougalmann Skycat entered service it represented what was probably the best compromise of the time between nautical and aeronautical demands in ashipboard fighter. Aesthetically unappealing to some,  what the little warplane lacked in speed compared to its contemporary land based rivals it made up for in having a good climb rate, patrol range and the sturdyness for intensive carrier ops.

I hope you like the pugnacious little fighter :)

Considering that I did NOT finish it within the deadline...... well, if there is any voting to be done and this one isn't in it, I guess I'd be cool with that, too......

Because I just couldn't seem to get my head to come up with detailed gun placements that are digestible to myself...... and this is also why I took so many detours in my mental notes thread- hard brainstorming attempts would have been bearable if they are often-enough successful, but this time I needed a break after each one......

But now it's complete, so I think I'll post it here anyway......

As for the story's background...... well, parallel universe stuff that I've been trying to run with on my mental notes thread but probably won't ever finish, this ship being from one dominated by a fascist New World Order......

The Sekien ("crimson flame" in the native language) class amphibious assault ship is basically a continuation of army escort carrier concept employed during the previous world war in the home universe of the United New Order Nations except that, thanks to the advent of helicopters and the AV-16 STOVL attack aircraft, the Sekien class can provide truly-sustainable air cover during amphibious landing operations without resorting to the complex and space-consuming steam catapults and arresting gears.  A massive 48800-ton vessel, the port half of its flight deck is built into a takeoff and landing zone, with a skijump at its forward end, and the starboard half is used for deck park.

In addition to being capable of carrying an combined air group of eight AV-16s and 46 helicopters, three landing hovercrafts, and a Special Naval Landing Forces battalion landing team with armour and self-propelled artillery support, the Sekien class is also heavily-armed, albeit not to any level like the later Unyo class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.  Each ship has two VLS batteries, one 16-cell devoted for point air defense missiles to the forward starboard side and one 32-cell loaded with cruise missiles on the forward edge centreline of the flight deck.  The rest of the ship is bristling with artillery weapons, including two twin 15.5cm/L60 guns, four single 12.7cm/L50 automatics, and 12 twin 12.7cm/L40 guns, that are intended for shore gunfire support and self-defense against hostile littoral combatants although incendiary shrapnel rounds intended for anti-aircraft use remain standard-issue for all naval artillery guns as well. Four trainable very-short-range missile launchers, six quad radar-guided and four single 25mm autocannons, eight twin 30mm autocannons, and eight twin 13.2mm heavy machineguns provide the final line of defense against aerial and surface attackers.

In keeping with the navy doctrine stipulating that all capital vessels are to be capable of fleet operations, the Sekien class assault carrier is equipped with sonars and hidden tubes for lightweight ASW torpedoes, and the 32-cell VLS battery can be loaded with anti-ship missiles and anti-submarine rockets when operating in that manner.

Seven ships are constructed and in service, all given fire-related names.

The namesake of the class, Sekien, were assigned to the Central Area Fleet responsible for defense of its homeland but ordered to reinforce the Far Eastern Area Fleet just in time for the Allied Resistance to commence Operation: Metal Black.  Its stint was brief and all but over after the first naval battle of the uprising, where it failed to defend the fleet carrier Zuiryu from airstrike launched from Allied Resistance carrier Phoenix.  After replenishment of its depleted aircraft complement and repair, it and sistership Onibi (named after a type of atmospheric ghost light in native folklores) are reassigned into the newly-raised 5th Overseas Mobile Fleet, which is to amount to one battleship, one large fleet carrier, five amphibious vessels, and a substantial flotilla of escorts when it sets sail.

The stage is set for the UNON's first off-world campaign......
