Apophenia's Offerings

apophenia:
Prompted by Evan and Frank's discussion of turbojet-powered Thunderbolts, I've knocked this together (based on an Olivier Beernaert F-84E profile). The first mod was to shorten the fuselage a scale 15 inches (as per a Tommy Thomason article) for an early Thunderjet length.

Next, P-47 wings were substituted. With those wings comes a 'taildragger' undercarriage arrangement. In the Justo Miranda sketches accompanying the discussion, I believe that the space needed for a retractable tail wheel has been underestimated. To that end, I have enlarged the Thunderjet's tail bumper to create a mounting point and housing for a semi-retractable tail wheel.

As per the discussion, I have substituted a P-47D bubble canopy and dropped the F-84's ejection seat. In a scrap view, I have ghosted-in the positions of the main fuselage fuel tanks. The P-47 wings would also now be entirely filled with fuel - gun armament being moved to the nose on the F-84.

The result is certainly no 'looker' ... but, I believe, it is more plausible than the other posited jet Thunderbolt (re)arrangements.

Frank3k:
It looks clunky - but that's the point.

Litvyak:
That's fantastically boring... which might be why it looks right.

Yep. It can't be a 'Thud' if it doesn't clunk  ;)
