To put it another way, everyone was a winner because they participated. I tend to take the view that a Group Build is like a bunch of guys sitting around when one says "I'm going to build something like this...", another chimes in and says "Hey, that's a cool idea, I'm going to do something similar", then another "me too" etc, etc.... The goal with the group builds is to generate interests in builds with a common inspiration and to do so maybe in a form of friendly light competition. The goal is the fun/building (including writing/drawing etc) not the winning.
We also allow our group build moderators to be fairly loose in how they set things up and run their group builds. There is only one set rule "Have fun!".
Now if someone wants a poll in one GB, then fine, do so. If someone other than a moderator wants to set one up then you can do so (think of it along the lines of asking "Hey guys, these were all great. Which was your favourite?").
