I'm guessing this mod was to test how T-tails would behave in high angles-of-attack - like carrier landings?

Curtiss A-8, Curtiss Conqueror V-12 powered. The A-12 was basically a radial engined conversion of the A-8.

Standard direct-drive Conqueror.
