AM-1 MAULER
« on: February 01, 2018, 10:07:25 AM »
I think, I may actually be able to participate in some group builds this year. We'll see how this goes.

I have a SIGA AM-1 Mauler that looks appropriate for this GB.

I remember when that kit was released, I think - didn't one of the boxings come with a half a dozen torpedoes to hang under wing? I've always had a soft spot for the big post war carrier aircraft projects. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it, Ed.

Today's photo. Progressing well. At the putty and filler stage. As is typical with many short run kits, the parts are crude and the details coarse. But a little judicious work with the file and sandpaper and it went together.

Always remember the image of the Mauler hauling three torpedoes plus bombs from long ago.  Here is that image again courtesy of the Wikipedia page for the Martin AM-1 Mauler:

That question also came to mind as I was reading up on the AM-1 Mauler on the Wikipedia link.  Mauler was larger than AD Skyraider and able to carry more than the Douglas design.  Other detractors such as flying characteristics and stability issues when landing on carrier decks eventually saw the Mauler being relegated to land use and operations before retirement of the Mauler from service.

I have to admit, this didn't end up taking near as much PSR as I was expecting. Put a coat of primer on this afternoon. Looking good. Maybe start on the camo tomorrow.

Nice.  Don't remember, though may have, seeing Mauler build/built.

Not to be confused with similar "Mugger" by BdB !

Have had some time to do modeling the last few days.
Here is the Mauler getting masked for the second top color.

And with the second color.

Start on the decals and weathering tomorrow.

RCN 825 Sqd began flying anti-submarine missions in early 1946 with their new Martin AM-1 Maulers. Based on the HMS Habakku (pycrete carrier) they were an important part of clearing the U-boat threat from the North Atlantic and allowing the supply convoys to make their crossing with minimal losses for the first time during the war.
