Here's a new idea:

1/35 scale Sci-Fi human transport vehicles.

All original in creation, no Star Wars/Trek/Aliens/etc.
Any era, any mode of transport, alternative life forms allowed but only in a secondary role, any universe.   Support structures allowed too.   (I have this odd shaped shampoo bottle that may become the foundation for a MagicSculpt house in which to park my rig in front of)

Why 1/35 scale?   There is a ready supply of rather inexpensive parts and it is a well understood scale.   As most people in the modeling world tend towards some sort of conflict-involved vehicle, 1/35 makes sense.     Air, land, sea, space, intraterrainian, intradimensional, whatever.    It just has to be human transport.    And for the love of mud, throw Charles Darwin completely out the door like Lucas did with Star Wars and build from there.

Can it be a modified form of a pre-existing kit?  Sure!  Can it be *entirely* original and completely scratchbuilt?  Sure!

Since it would involve a fair bit of scratch building, the GB would be of extended length and have no prize other than the satisfaction of creating something uniquely your own and sharing it with the world.      I'm just sorry Knob Creek Bourbon don't do 1/35 scale replicas of their bottles or I'd suggest that be a constant in each entrant just for kicks.   ;D  Starbucks is too blasė.

For instance, here is this powered hang ''glider'' that I just drew up a minute ago.  It was inspired by late 1800's era hang gliders, the Fokker Eindekker, the Chimney Swifts living in our own chimney, the American drone supposedly shot down by the Iranians, and Hayao Miyazaki's vehicles.

Side view, along with a high speed all terrain communications truck with both suspension and communications disk retracted, driver's position not shown.  And yes, that says tanned buffalo hide over tubing for the shell.

Note:  These have not been thought through and are simply very preliminary rough drafts of thoughts just popping into my head.    :-\

Okay, here's an idea: take an iconic and influential plane/tank/ship/car/whatever, remove it from history, then make a model that's based on the consequences.

By way of example, my favorite version is "No Spooks", i.e. What If the F-4 Phantom never existed? F-8U Crusader III and/or Douglas Missileer for the US Navy? F-105 production extended with advanced versions to compensate for Vietnam losses? "Six-Shooter" F-106s deployed to Vietnam? What would the UK have done in the 1960s without the ever-present threat/promise (depending on your POV) of a Phantom buy?

You could either choose the "victim" in the GB rules, i.e. the No Phantoms or No Shermans GB, or you could leave it open for each participant to choose their own.

No Shermans GB,

interesting.....what if as some kind of lend-lease payback the Soviets gave the Americans the plans/rights to T34?...maybe improved the design for western use?

im thinking of what would have happened in north africa or in europe in '44

T34 with hedgerow cutters for use in the bocage.....or duplex drive ones with the floatation screen

but its post ww2 that would be interesting if there wasnt the huge numbers of shermans......isreal would have got T34, same as the Sov supplied arabs.......................Korea would have seen T34 vs T34

actually this has got me thinking.................off to fleabay again  ;D
I have come up with a plan so cunning you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel!

Or maybe the Americans would entertain the idea of either building British designs in their factory or produce tanks with British influence?

Hum...... widened and/or lengthened Cavalier/Cromwell hull with T23 turret......?

Or maybe they go down the British/Soviet route with a Christie-inspired Cruiser tank.....

US Navy Aviation celebrated its Centenary last year. This year (22 May, to be exact) it's the USMC Aviation's turn. How about a GB included any and all Marine Crops flying whiffs? Maybe even include USN aviation as well.
I love that! but then again im biased...  ;)

May I suggest an old idea for a new Themed Build Group?  Anachronisms: generalized Old Battles with New Weapons.

This Themed GB is intended to cover all the ideas put forward in several threads: Modern Crusades, Roman Empire does not fall, Old Battles with New Weapons and the like.

In fact any whiff (any subject, any epoch, any something Grin ) could be accepted as long as the back history is well concocted, but IMHO special care should be taken in markings and decoration.

I could be moderator.

By the time being I ask for your help to find an adequate name.

Thanks

You may.  I will include in the list for the next vote.  Alternatively, if you drum up enough support, we can run earlier.

..... there's plenty of room in this world for more ugly aircraft ! :icon_fsm:
((( we need an "Ugliest Plane" / "most perverted design" group build contest ))) :-\

I'd like to expand, for a lack of better words on my part, it into a "bada*s machines you love to hate" idea.

A machine (airplane, warship, tank, or whatever) so hideous-looking yet so functional; you'd be so tempted to see it blowing up except that it's perfectly capable of giving your proud what-if creations a run of their money.

After seeing your stunning entry in the Black Projects GB, I can see how this idea would have a lot of appeal, Carlos. The more I think about it, the more I like it.

I think you have a pretty good name in your post - Modern Crusades: Old Battles with New Weapons.

I'm hoping we can give this idea a slot on the GB calendar soon.

Borrowing from what ended up being the Slowy Jet.
GB concept is:  Aircraft that have good features like the Pave Penny and Maverick missiles, bomb bay and modern F-15 cockpit.  But have other features that don't play too well with the good features like fabric covered biplane wings with fixed gear contrasted with all metal fuselage and jet engines.  Could have so-so features like the twin 50 cal chin guns.  Then there is the mostly useless single 7.62mm machine gun dorsal turret.
Planes which fly well, have a certain combat punch, but don't come together as being particularly useful.
Some one on BTS did a profile of a A-10 with a F-14 like forward fuselage to be a fighter-interceptor.  Modern yes, but minimally useful.
Aircraft where the design concept integration went amuck......

A bit of concept recycling ...

taiidantomcat suggested a "Bent wing Birds" group build way back when.

Dr. YoKai put a spin of this with "Cranky" (gull-wings go straight or vice versa) ... but that may have been the hemp talking. Weaver re-dubbed this "Crank (or uncrank) My Ride ..."

Folks,

We're running towards the end of the GBs for this year.  Sometime in the coming months I will be calling for nominations for some GBs for next year...providing people want them.

A proposal for a GB for next year:

The Fear and Trepidation GB:  in other words, a GB for those aspects of the hobby you are scared of (for whatever reason).  It could be doing a Vacuform kit or perhaps a resin one.  Maybe it is doing a figurine?  Or doing a profile?  Or writing a backstory?  Maybe it is doing a diorama or trying to model water?  Whatever the fear, why not use this GB as an excuse to move out of your comfort zone and finally conquer that fear.  You know it deserves it!

How about an All Things Floaty GB?

It would be open to anything that floats! Seaplanes, Flying Boats, Ships, Boats, Subs, Sea-Doos, dead bodies Space Vehicles, Lighter-Than-Air...lots of possibilities!

Well, I'd be up for the Fear & Trepidation idea... if it'd welcome RW subjects. I've got a Czechmaster Seafire XV with sting hook with RW RCN decals that I've had on the shelf for a long time, but have been a bit too intimidated to get started on... it's all resin.

The Floaty idea is pretty cool too, could use that as an excuse to get those County-class parts I need to build HMBCS New Westminster!

Not to worry, Ms. Litvyak, Real World subjects are always welcome here. Besides, I can't be the only one who'd really like to see what you can do with some plastic in 3D!

For many of us, building a Real World subject would indeed be courting "Fear & Trepidation"!

Ah, good to know! If that gets going, then I'll definitely be on board with that Czechmaster Seafire!

In the meantime, I'm sitting here staring at my stash for a few days now, trying to decide what to do as an OOB (RW scheme or paint-scheme whiff) build to do as a motivational thing. Been eyeing the 1/48 South Front Yak-1 (to do, of course, as my (user)namesake's ride, or a 1/72 Hasegawa Tracker (RW RCN), or 1/72 Fujimi F7U-3 Cutlass (whiff RCN)...

...There's another GB idea, maybe: "Board's Choice". Wherein one lists several build proposals, and the rest of the board decides what you do... ?
