For me this is way cool, I can now show a picture of an installation that's taken a lot of my time at Bell:

Is that the dust / particulate filter looking thing on the side of the nacelle?  I would think that is the purpose based on the flap door thing on the intake opening that looks like it would rotate to close it off.

Filtration system for very dirty environments; it takes the place of the EAPS (Engine Air Particle Separator) system and is more thorough and handles finer particle sizes.  What you're looking at is the installed prototype/proof of concept package; I'm currently very involved in the production version which is informed from experience and problems with this installation.  The next six months to a year will be a most "sporting" time for me and the rest of the team (it's a small team and it doesn't look like we'll get much, if any, help in producing all the drawings - other than our lead engineer, I'm the only designer on the team with experience on the proof of concept effort).

BTW, the approach for turbine engines is new, but this isn't that different from the sand filters used on "Tropical" versions of the Bf109 and MC.202.

Is it planned to retrofit earlier aircraft with this mod?

Ah, I get it now!  There is a flap in the intake and that closes, while there are intakes around the periphery with filters on them where the air is sucked in.   Is that right?   Are the filters "dry" or "wet" filters?

There will be a mod kit to allow retrofitting all MV-22B and CV-22B aircraft with this mod.  The very early LRIP MV-22A aircraft would need rather more upgrading to use the kit.

I should add that the very early LRIP aircraft that are still flying are quite high in hours and likely would not be good subjects for conversion on those grounds.  I can indeed testify to this, the proof of concept aircraft was in this block and it was quite a chore to convert (and that's without finding all the little maintenance "fixes" it had acquired over the years; we had to do some "on the fly" adaptations to work around those, but we had a good team and got the job done on schedule and budget and the PoC aircraft has more than confirmed the efficacy of this mod).

More like a rotating door, but yeah, that's right.  The filters can be either, but you want the wet ones for the really nasty environments.  Oh, testing has also showed that this system deals well with salt spray, too, from operating low over the ocean or in hover near the ocean surface.

That makes sense.  All that salt spray must play havoc with the turbine section.  Using the filters would decrease the need for a fresh water wash out.   I'm surprised at the use of "wet" filters though.  While they'll stop the fine particles must be hell to clean them when operating in sandy environments, otherwise they'd clog up very quickly.  I've seen vehicle sand filters clog within a few hours of operation when operating in our Top End, Downunder. I can only imagine a turbine sucking masses through it must be a lot worse.  Any idea of what the average time between cleans would be?  Wasn't that one of the reasons why the choppers used on the Iran rescue mission crashed?  The mission time exceeded TBF on the filters/engines?

The filters have demonstrated more longevity than predicted but I see your point.  Two counter-considerations are 1) the filter elements are easy to remove and clean or replace (unlike those on the CH-53) and 2) there is a warning system built in to notify the crew when the filters are approaching the dangerously clogged state.  We are building on the lessons learned with the proof of concept vehicle to make sure the production installation does not make the same mistakes.

The next one ain't that cool, but I like to share it with all of you. Let's call it The Rage of Mother Nature.

I found it today at some forgotten corners of my hard-drive, and I can't recall where from it originates or where is it taken... probably Alaska, based on a wheel markings... Landing gear makes me guess that this is some type of a bushplane.
