Title: A Tiger moth coloured Tiger moth - FINISHED!
Post by: Robomog on June 09, 2021, 03:02:38 AM
Hi all

Throwing my brightly coloured hat into the ring,  I have some 1 to 1 scale real world decorating and home improvements to do so i may not finish this one.

Time will tell..........

So here is the starting point

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51234139721_4d7b6a48c0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m4omLz) (https://flic.kr/p/2m4omLz) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr

Its the old mould circa 1957 (which is only three years younger than me ! ) and its showing its age, more of that later.

I'm going to try and make it look something like this -

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51234139746_a580c588c4_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m4omM1) (https://flic.kr/p/2m4omM1) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr

So not especially whiffy but nonetheless a bit different, and yes, I am confronting my orange paint nemesis but, and it's a big but here, it is NOT day-glo !

More when it happens......

That is dead clever   The orange does look quite toned-down. But those spots! Fabulous  ;D

More of a Tiger than a Tigermoth but still some inspiration for you:

Here we go again, as you can see from the pics it's a pretty basic kit with no cockpit detail whatsoever and no cockpit glazing, something I shall have to address later

I'm not usually  one for putting pilots into kits or doing much internal detail as most of it is lost once you put the canopy on, especially in 1/72 scale. But seeing as this is an open cockpit I thought I had better do something as it would look quite Spartan otherwise.

So here are the parts, considering the age of the mould the amount of flash is not excessive but I'm sure the fit is not going to be good, we shall see......

I've sourced some seats that I am adapting to fit and started forming the control  panel.

Thanks for looking..........

 Hi all

A bit more progress, the seats and control panels are complete and as this is a sort of demonstrator I've given it a posh walnut dashboard.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51235206415_3bef44f0ca_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m4tPRR) (https://flic.kr/p/2m4tPRR) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr

I've also added a compass each and seatbelts.

The fuselage is now stitched up and things dont look too bad .

Once I've sorted out the join lines it's onto the wings.........

More when it happens...........

Hi All

This kit is really beginning to show it's age, for instance ejector pin holes in all the flying surfaces

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51235206305_365b2ba9e2_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m4tPPX) (https://flic.kr/p/2m4tPPX) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr

Also the bottom wing is a perfect aerofoil but at the junction of the fuselage should be flat, so out with the filler and let PSR commence .

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51239265352_b635c27369_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m4QCrw) (https://flic.kr/p/2m4QCrw) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr

The tail has a similar fit but I also had to lengthen the locating holes to move the tailplane forward a tad,  more filling here.

A little bit more tidying up then I'm on to the painting.

Thanks for looking............

Yow! Airfix must've gone for one-size-fits-all jumbo ejector pins when they adopted 1/24th scale kits  :o

I guess it is a small mercy that this pin mark is on the under surface of the wing!

Hi all

All the initial construction and PSR  has been completed and its onto the painting.

It wasn't long after I joined BTS that the late great Brian de Basher sussed that I like doing the great reveal at the end of my build threads, unfortunately it will be virtually impossible on this one as I am painting the top wing separately to the rest of the plane and joining it all up later. It makes it easier all round to paint the model so apologies in advance.

Here's the story so far........

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51256694429_5f4f13e032_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m6nXuR) (https://flic.kr/p/2m6nXuR) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr

The top wing is completed and the bottom wing and fuselage has had a couple of coats of orange.

The orange paint has had a bit of a last laugh, if it had been a fresh bottle I recon I would have been all right but it was slightly dried up and very thick.

I couldn't get a replacement as there appears to be a shortage of Humbrol products in the UK at the moment so I had to make the best of a bad lot.

It had not gone so far as to be impossible to use but regardless of of whatever thinning medium I used (water, tamiya thinners, iso)  i could not obtain an even finish and while smooth the paint exhibits a subtle kind of streaky  iridescence that I cant get rid of.  :-\

On the plus side it looks ok at a distance, it's only when you get up close and under strong light it shows so I guess I can live with that  ;)

More when it happens.........

The orange looks great to me! At least the underlying plastic is yellow, so that helps.

The upper wing is looking great!

Hi all

Made some good progress,

The body is painted

 (https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51284695790_dab1e79691_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m8RtjW) (https://flic.kr/p/2m8RtjW) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr

And the wings are on,  a little fiddly but wasnt the pain I thought it was going to be

 (https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51284398529_1cfdbefbfa_z.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/gp/54032744@N08/u3G5kQ) (https://www.flickr.com/gp/54032744@N08/u3G5kQ) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr

Next job is the canopies.  Now this is an interesting learning curve.  Initially I was going to construct them from three pieces a wind screen an two side screens, big mistake.

Firstly the pieces are tiny and I needed to use a magnifying glass on a stand to cut them but the real problem I think with very small pieces of plastic is they become  very sensitive to static electricity which enhances there ability to ping.  After about five attempts to cut the wind screen and every set of side screens just disappearing I gave that up as a bad job and walked away resolving to borrow the screens from another kit.

Twenty four hours  later and a lightbulb moment  --------  construct them from one piece ! ------------  .  Cutting a strip of acetate to the right width then cutting that to the correct length, I  trimmed the corners to form a triangle then carefully bend the triangular ends to form the side screens.  Et voila !  A very nice canopy  yay !

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51282939957_1bbd166019_z.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/gp/54032744@N08/5bqM7A) (https://www.flickr.com/gp/54032744@N08/5bqM7A) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr

I've photographed it with the knife blade in shot to give you some idea how small it is.

Next processes fit the screens, decals then rigging.

Thanks for looking.......

Tick !

Well done on the canopy. The distortion of the bend then sets your frame line... or could even be the frame line

The new windscreen is probably clearer than the Coke bottle thickness kit windscreen.

The blue-gray (almost look green) spots look great and go well with the orange and the upper wing.

This kit is really showing its age but with a bit of patience and filler can be made into quit an acceptable model, I have the new tool version of this aircraft which is far superior, but that is reserved for another less colourful project.

As always all comments and criticisms gratefully accepted..........

Thanks for looking.

And great registration! According to Golden Years of Aviation, the RW G-ADHD was to be a DH.85 Leopard Moth (c/n 7106) which was never completed. Now we known where that reg was transferred to
