Title: Space/High altitude heavy strike craft
Post by: Goonie on August 02, 2016, 12:37:57 AM
Hi guys, It's been quite a long time since my last visit here, but I'll try to atone for this, at least with these entry ;)

So I've recently dug out some interesting model scraps such as 1:48 F-22 carcass, some sadly looking parts from 1:72 Sr-71, cockpit with canopy from 1:72 A-6E (or more accurate - remnants of my early atempts to glue togeatgher some parts ;) ), wheels and part of landing gear from 1:144 Airbus A-310, few toy rockets and other, less significant model debris:

I'm thinking about putting it togeather in this configuration:

There will be also something like NASA style docking port few centimeters behind cockpit which will be conected via acces tube with cockpit. Im also planning to widen a bit space between pilot chairs - enough to place acces tube exit. Canopy will be non transparent, partialy beacuse it's totaly dirty from glue (those mentioned earlier early attempts...) and it also need to be widen a bit more. Beacuse It's going to operate primary in spcae air intakes going to be converted into additional weapon bays :D As I see it, to operate in orbital conditions this air craft or rather space craft will be using some... different and classified propulsion system  ;) . Finally wing tips going to be wrapped up a bit (enough to look a least a bit like capable of atmosferic entry) and I'm also thinking about spherical nose like in NASA Shuttles...

This looks very interesting! Standing by for launch! (Or was that lunch?)

Glad you joined us  ;)

When I saw your composition I saw in mind spaceship from old anime Crusher Joe - Minerva :)

It could also be a recon ac for fast response photos in crisis situations. An SR-71 replacement. I really like this concept!

Wow, thanks for such strong feedback :D

@Artoor: that's almost exactly what I'm thinking about - armoured cockpit with little viewfinder in the front part of canopy (thought still resembling the shape of A-6E canopy) and flatten or ball-like nose to disperse air pressure during atmospheric reentry.

@kerick: I'm planning to add a lot of recon like looking electronics, but those weapon bays of F-22. It would be such a loss not to use it ;)

Well, there was the plan to modify SR-71 to be able to carry four SRAM's, so it's only natural that SR-72 Aurora would have been designed with conventional and nuclear strike capabiliity in mind... :P

The X-15 used a sphere in the nose to take the heat. I don't recall the material it was made of.

The X-15 used a sphere in the nose to take the heat. I don't recall the material it was made of.

The moving Q-Ball was part of the inertial flight data system (it helped tell the aircraft which way was up),
was first flown on the #2 X-15 and was not part of the original design. It was machined from Inconel-X,
which was also the primary material for the X-15 airframe. The #1 aircraft originally had a large nose
mounted probe.

Wow what an outstanding amalgamation of parts!

My money's on this one coming out a real beauty!
