VW-2 missile and Rocket Research Station, 1/35 scale
« on: October 31, 2023, 07:34:39 AM »
Model depiction of the launch complex at Weenemunde, Germany. Wilhelm Von Baum, descendant of a family of specialist brewers, has combined the three greatest things Germany has contributed to the world: Beer, rocketry, and Volkswagens! A team of 3 NSA agents infiltrated the facility and photographed most areas. Model workers have reproduced what they documented, and attached are technical and threat assessment statements. Utilising a very potent brand of beer as fuel, the rocket system utilises liquid oxygen as the oxidiser. The primary payload is HERB 1E (Hypersonic Experimantal Reentry Body 1E), a 2 crew spaceplane. Alternate payloads include the Schnelles Silber (Quick Silver) Orbital Interceptor and a ballistic missile stage, which utilises Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle warheads (MIRV) and carries the program name of "Grief" (Griffin). (MIRV Griffin)

Wilhelm Von Baum and workers.
The extreme volatility of the beer based fuel allows for it to be loaded into the rocket by hand, one bottle at a time.

This became my 65/95 project. Every time I'd get near 95% completed, I'd add more detail or another vehicle and push it back to 65% (or worse) I even wound up making another completely different flight vehicle using a V2 (several Dragon V2s died to make this project as it was) and it looked like I'd never get it done.
Then my wife retired and we made a quick decision to relocate to a new house. This is the last thing I am going to pack, as I decided to call it "close enough" to being done. It's likely going to get broken in the move pushing it further back down below 50%.
This is as complete as I expect it to be.

Nice that they used the only known self-repairing version of the Beetle as the basis for the re-entry vehicle of the tourist model

Good to see you back, by the way! Missed your particular brand of insanity. ;)

I'm at a total and utter loss for words. Every time I think I've found the last little detail three more pop up. My goodness...what an achievement!

This is such a cool build! I can ID most of the figures (looks like Miniart with some Hasegawa), but they look great! The Von Braun guy looks the part, too.

What kit did you use to make the interceptor? It looks like a 1/48 Mercury capsule with a Gemini hatch, or is it the 1/48 Gemini kit with one segment removed? Regardless of the source, it looks great.

The capsule is an Estes Mercury capsule, scaled at 1/32, with a Gemini style hatch scratch built. The nosecone was made from Milliput.

File this under "Fun With Chemistry":
The VW Van was one of the first things built, and was sprayed with Vallejo rattle can semi gloss. It's still slightly tacky after a couple years, and dust sticks to it something awful. I don't recommend either it or their gloss spray can clear coats, they have apparently no real set drying time.

Secondly, after a couple years, the Tamiya Flat spray can flat coat is cracking some of the Tamiya Spray Can Flat Black sections. That's irking.
