ORP "Warsaw" II - 1:200
« on: August 20, 2013, 07:14:32 AM »
Sooo...Mack is finished and I can't resist from upgradeing this one :)

First of all, real one:

Few weeks ago I bought scratchbuilt model of polish ORP "Warsaw" II missile destroyer (type 56AE , in Nato: Kotlin SAM) . It's quite old, I guess 40 years at least. It means that it was build when real ship was almost TOP SECRET.  The hull is carved from wood and superstructure is made of soldered cooper plates. I don't know name of the builder, but after examining the model thoroughly, I came to respect his skills. He build "Warsaw" probably from censored drawings and blurred photos, using any available materials like wires, plates, nails, meshes and achieved really nice result.

I'll try to rebuilt this model , to make it more like real "Warsaw" but I won't change it as much as possible. I'll add some details and minor tweaks. I photocopied paper "Warsaw" by Flymodel and I'll use it as a pattern for additional parts. Now destroyer looks like here:

Still a lot of old paint and glue to sand off. There is a base coat on superstructure but only to make irregularities visible. This model is more a folk-art than a scale ship , it will be a challenge. First detail work very soon :)

I have great respect for "old school" models like that which use found materials. It takes a lot of talent and skill to build that way.

If anyone can bring this ship back to its former glory, it's you, artoor!

Glad to see you taking on another ship Artoor!  8)

I'd suggest cross posting this to http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/index.php  The guys over there eat and breath ship building and they'll be able to give some tips and general help and incite on restoring your old model.  They love seeing old builds like that and might be able to offer some history on it as well.

I'm looking forward to see how bright you'll make her shine once more  :)

I've registered there, I hope this will help :) It's great to have you too in this topic :)

First updates...

Added front part of superstructure. Original model missed this:

Some details on the torpedo tubes. There were only five soldered cooper pipes:

Hello!

I've managed to detail front deck of model:

Also, I've realized that front part of superstructure is too high and I have to lower it:

After long fight radar mast (or it's base shape) was ready:

And finally one of the AA guns was detailed with spare parts and paper railing:

You know it actually looks like the original builder used parts of the 'Fly Model' kit to build the superstructure, (I've been looking over my copy of this card kit) but the hull below the waterline just doesn't look right, maybe the pic is throwing me off ......

Gotta love Soviet/Russian warships don't cha???? Great job so far, I look forward to the finished product 8)

I don't know if "Fly Model" card kit of "Warsaw" or even "Fly Model" company was there when this model was build. The whole hull can be wrong 'cause I think it was carved out just to be "like "Warsaw" hull".

You're probably right and I'm guilty of being a 'rivet counter'.

I'm looking forward to the whole thing being finished though, great work so far. :)

Hello,

After long break I came back to my ship. I've recently bought a book "Destroyers of Polish Navy" so now I have a  lot of photos and plans of "Warsaw".  I've decided to extend aft superstructure to make model more like real ship. Also, I've scratchbuild two RBU-2500 launchers(near front AAA gun), front mast, main fire control device (green thing), anchor chains and base of antennae complex. I've managed to remove stand, although it was pretty solid. Now "Warsaw" looks like below:

Thanks :)

I really like the moment when I have to raid my spare box to find useable parts for detailing :)
Main antennae complex - here are some wires, styrene sheets and front part of soviet 1/48 AA missile:

AA missile launcher (ZIF-1) - here some Evergreen profiles, 1/72 F-22 missiles and 1/48 HARMs

Mast with radar - here another 1/48 soviet AA missile, gun base and launch crane from 1/400 destroyer and wire mesh

Hello,

I've added some details on radar antenna:

Also, my "Judgement Day" donated gun turret which was modified to resemble Warsaw's SM-20-ZIF1

I also had to solve a problem: how to make pneumatic lifeboats? Roll paper? Cut a round Evergreen profile? How to make cuts equal? Solution? - Very simple. Without rolling, cutting etc. Just buy few cylinder-shaped beads for necklaces. The're cheap and there is a lot of them :)

Detailing continues...
Today I've made few door imitations, some instruments on aft superstructure (also spare beads). Lifeboats are glued now and I have to say that I like it :) Additional guns are also there.
