Last Year's Builds-The What-If? Batch
« on: January 14, 2019, 01:57:25 AM »
First whif of the year was my 3rd overall build.
Academy Hunter as USAF F-99C serving in Vietnam

Napalm and CBUs for a CAS mission

Hasegawa 1/48 F4F as a Naval Ordnance Test Station Sidewinder testbed

XAAM-N-7 Sidewinder ready for a test firing

HobbyBoss 1/48 AMX A-1B as a RNZAF A-1B+ Kārearea (Falcon), RNZAF 75th Anniversary scheme, 2012

Airfix 1/48 Gnat as RAF Gnat FG.3, Phan Rang, Vietnam, 1969

Left Slipper Tank converted to gun pod with M154 7.62mm Minigun

Hasegawa/Eduard 1/48 F-8E as RAN F-8E (AN) with Shrike SEAD loadout.

Nice kit and the Eduard extras are great, but clearly designed to be built with the wing raised.  It took a lot of work to get it to sit anywhere near flush.

So that's is for my 2018 Whif builds.  More to come in 2019!!

Good stuff!

Really like the early Sidewinder on the Hellcat.
USAF Hunter looks great, as does the Kiwi AMX (man, I really wish Kinetic and Itaelribteamed up and released a 1/72 version).
And you can't go wrong with a Crusader what-if build.
Cheers,
Moritz

Concur missiled-up Hellcat is every bit a stunner!

Thanks fellas!  The Sidewinder on the Hellcat is based on pics I found of the real XAAM-N-8 trials.   IN the real trials they used Skyraiders, but it seemed to me a Sidewinder needed to be carried by a fighter.

Love 'em all.  For that Crusader, I'm surprised it had Sidewinders instead of AGM-122 Sidearms, built from a AIM-9C Sidewinder (the only Sidewinder with a radar head), for SEAD purposes.

I thought about Sidearms, but that entered service after the timeframe I was working with for the model.  Mid 80s if I remember correctly.

Kind of revenge when one considers that in the real world, the Hellcat was the target:

That's the pic I used as a reference for the missile.  Base for it was a 1/48 Matra Magic.

Yep, just confirmed that from available data.  Still, a pair of Sidewinders for self-defense makes sense.

Just like the Real World builds, all totally awesome! :icon_alabanza: :icon_alabanza:

However, this time around I have a favourite - the RAN F-8E. 8) 8)

I too am liking the USAF Hunter and would really like to know what pylons you used for the Sidewinder launch rails/missile.  I have been trying to find the right shape for a modernized Hunter that features additional stores pylons.  All that wing area, seems a shame to let it go empty with just the four OEM stores pylons.

The Sidewinder pylons are outboard pylons from an A-1D.  They were small enough to look right with a Sidewinder launch rail on it.  The belly pylon is a standard US style TER mounted directly on the belly as seen on this Singapore Hunter that also has the inboard Sidewinder pylons.  I considered this configuration, but the spare parts I had worked better further outboard.

Thanks for the clarification.  I have an abundance of stores pylons from the Skyraider in plastic and resin.  Will certainly give that a second look.  In the interim, I had opted to use the stores pylons from the Monogram AV-8B Harrier or the AV-8A/AV-8C Harrier due too availability from several scrapped Harrier kits but the details are soft and almost invisible (thanks Airfix and Tamiya).

I think the Sidewinder pylons used on the RAF's Harrier IIs on the outrigger would work pretty well for the inboard position as seen in the Singapore pic.
