Movie and TV Spacecraft Ideas and Inspiration
« on: February 26, 2012, 05:26:29 PM »
Hi folks,

A thread for your movie and TV themed spacecraft ideas and inspiration.

To begin with, has anyone ever tried to model the Messiah spacecraft from Deep Impact?

Regards,

Greg

I was always partial to the Vorlon fleet ships from Babylon 5, particularly this beastie:

I do so wish that Monogram had done more with the Babylon 5 lisence than they did.

I have a small cast metal version of that Vorlon ship stashed away somewhere, but that's as good as I could ever find for a kit of one.

Well if you are going to mention Babylon 5, you just have to mention the Start Fury:

I'd love to see someone go back to the original Lensman books that Lensman was very (!!!) loosely adapted from and do those ships.  I especially want to see the original Brittania as well as Kimball Kinnison's "Speedster".

Mind you, if the reported live action version of the first main book in the series, Galactic Patrol gets made, we may see some interesting interpretations.  Supposedly JMS is doing the writing on it - which is appropriate because he's a strong fan of the novels.

What would be interesting would be to do a launch diorama of the Space Clipper from 2001 according to the novel.  It's launched from the back of a fly-back booster that uses a launch track.  I'm thinking that a scaled-up P.1134 but with wing-tip verticals might do for the booster.

Interesting and quite nice looking but they don't match the description of the "fly-back" booster that Clarke put into his novel.  I'd be sorely tempted to do one clipper with these boosters and one more along the lines of Clarke's description.

To begin with, has anyone ever tried to model the Messiah spacecraft from Deep Impact?

I've always wondered what is preventing the first human space warships to look like much-enlarged space shuttle......

I'm first and fore-most a Wing Commander guy though.

Top: the Epee.  Paper-thin armours, so-so energy shield, and the ability to carry a torpedo despite being a light fighter.

Bottom: Excalibur, a heavy fighter.

Replacing the prop-rotors with large ducted fans might work, though I'm not sure what you'd gain beyond being able to execute a straight-ahead landing without bending or breaking stuff.  I'm not at all certain, though, how practical that fan unit in the tail is.  Besides you have it exhausting right down on to the troops storming down the ramp; not generally a good idea.

Ducted fans? Why my good man, they are quite clearly impulse nacelles, somewhere in the range of 750 millicochranes I'd reckon and likely capable of low orbit flight. The rear unit is most certainly a quantum tritanium depolarization matrix generator.  Ducted fans indeed.
