Dies the Fire - Bearkiller Advanced Recon - Finished !!
« on: October 05, 2012, 08:45:31 PM »
Dunno if this the right place to plonk a build log (move it where it belongs if not ) .. but here we go.

Some of you may have read the Emberverse Series by SM Sterling, starting with the Novel Dies the fire.
For those of you have not so far "done yourself a favour" and read this series the basic concept is something like this.
A happening sweeps the earth and all electricity ceases to exist and physics around pressurisation change. This means technology requiring either any type of Electricity or the use of high pressure such as steam or gunpowder does not work. This leads to groups working together to survive in this new environment, which more or less equates to the Middle Ages as far as available technology goes. So that means Bows, swords and human muscle power are back. There are multiple groups of varying ethics blah blah blah..

Anyhoo.
Once this theme come up this just had to be done. So what I am looking at is doing a couple (I hope) of Advanced Recon guys from one of the clans in the book, the BearKillers. So sticking with the available technology the bicycle becomes a very useful tool.
So to start I wanted a more modern bike. So I scratchbuilt up some tyres and cast them and used some Aber etch for the Tamiya German Bicycle set for the spokes and chains and stuff and a new more cross-country type frame.

This is where I am at so far with the bike

This one of the figures. Planned to be in military kit with some civilian outdoor gear and bows/swords

Lets see if I can beat De Bashers deadline

This is totally the right place for your build thread, Brian and I really like your project!

We don't see many bike models around here, so this is a rare treat!

Looks like you've got some great details already and I can't wait to see more!

Thanks for kicking off our GB with the first work-in-progress!

right.. more "on ya bike"
Since the bikes are the main focus more time spent on this one, now pretty much finished and with the start of the kit being carried by these long rang recon folks.

Well what I have learned is.... the next one is going to better.. some things on this version did not quite work.

We shall see.. figgies under way as well but boring at the moment. Building Crossbows, quivers, swords and working up some civilian type packs and gear.
More to follow.. wait out.

Cheers

That's some excellent progress! I really like the saddle bags, etc.

Details like that really bring a model to life!

Looking forward to your next update!

Figure one is just about done, a couple of tweaks and goof fixes and he is there

working now on the second figure and the base.. hope I make it in time for the deadline due to the stupidly late start I made. ;)

That is looking really good, especially the pose you have with the figure on the bike.

That looks pretty darn amazing!

Had wondered where the SVD's barrel was. Then I read the backstory and it all dropped into place. Dragunov crossbow - very cool!

Wow I am impressed you could pick up the Dragunov from that shot. I am using a couple of sets of left over figures, the Zvesda Spetznaz and the Dragon Afghan Soviet Special Forces set as the basis for the figures. The Dragunov with the sight worked pretty well as a crossbow.

Well spotted that man !

quite a bit done this weekend.. hopefully should have it finished mid week.. Yay !!

Great work on this.  On the whole a excellent vignette.  (Although, for some reason, it looks to me like you placed it on top of a piece of chocolate cake with white frosting.  I guess since I can't eat cake any more, it's just my subconscious playing game with me.)
