To start with, what about either fitted with a pair of  Vought ASM-135 ASAT missiles:

Bruce Craig of www dot thunderjet dot com fame (website no longer in service) has built 3 SR-71s:   A Fed Ex rapid delivery system with a package bay in it's belly, an Evergreen Aviation transport jet that combines a Hasegawa Falcon fuselage top on an extended SR-71 forward fuse, and his latest an even longer version of the same for Team Ferrari.     The build qualities are first rate and bring a spontaneous smile to the faces of those who see them at the shows.

In 1997, I was at the Edwards AFB open house.

The highlight was a Mach 3 pass by one the NASA SR-71s.  The condensation trail was sporadic but when the SR-71 did a horizon to horizon pass in about 10 seconds, I'd say he was way over the posted speed limit.

Me too! They have lasted a long time since they are made of metal as well. I found a boxed stratofort on EvilBay for cheap so I bought it so I could Fly it around the room making woosh noises since I never had it as a kid For first hand research.

I remember reading ages ago that a strike version of the SR-71 was proposed using solid, hypersonic free fall bombs.  The idea was the solid bombs hitting the target at hypersonic speed would do more damage than a conventional frag bomb.

RATO units can be sourced from the Lindberg Snark for a 1:48th scale effort.  Not sure if the Revell box-scale Snark RATO units would be suitable for a 1:72nd scale attempt.  Then of course you have the opportunity to create a ZELL version if you wish. :)

Why not one refitted to boost an ASAT/ABM-launcher version of the X-15? Add a little relative flexibility in mopping up  what the Alaska-based and seaborne Tier 3 Aegis installations miss...

I think the relative sizes would be a bit problematical there.  How about a direct ASAT/ABM launcher version?

That works too, Evan--I thought X-15 was about the size of a D-21 and an ASAT was about the size of X-15A-2's drop tanks, and was thinking that by adding an intermediate "booster stage"  that'd expand the safety margin for knockdown.

Check the numbers, I think the X-15 is a bit larger than that.  Of course, I like the ABM that was to be deployed from the Ultimate Arrow (with ramjet pods et al.), it was derived from the upper stage of a Nike Zeus.  Mind you, if that ABM could fit the Arrow's weapons bay pod and deploy, it likely could fit in the F-12's weapons bays or equivalent on other variants.

Mashing Blackbirds with Teen series fighters:
Inspired by JoseFern's work, who pixel-bashed an F/A-18 with an SR-71. Wanted to see how the others might look.
My idea was to use 1/72 Teen fighters with a smaller-scale Blackbird, but it seems there's no 1/100-ish Blackbird.  :icon_punal: Also no 1/200 Blackbird to use 1/144 fighters with.  :icon_twisted: But I suppose the 1/48 crowd could use a 1/72 Blackbird with a fighter of choice.

Thanks for the heads-up!  :) 1/110 sounds great! Google says it's a snap-fit kit, but for what I have in mind, that's perfectly okay.

That's a most impressive engine.  "Way back when", at the start of my career, I was a young engineer at P&W's Florida R&D Center where those were developed and maintained and I've seen them both on the shop floor and in test stands (a most impressive sight at night in full afterburner).

and

How Supersonic Inlets Work (3.9M PDF)  (http://www.enginehistory.org/Convention/2013/HowInletsWork8-19-13.pdf)by J. Thomas Anderson

Some of the drawings used in Pete Law's presentation are from this paper by Tom Anderson, who joined the Lockheed Skunk Works in 1963, fresh out of college. Working for Ben Rich on the SR-71, he learned the craft of mixed-compression supersonic inlets from Dave Campbell, who holds a patent covering the inlet system used on Lockheed Blackbirds. The AEHS is very pleased to publish Tom's paper on the design and operation of SR-71 mixed compression inlets. An additional resource is Robert Abernethy's patent covering the Pratt & Whitney J58 bypass system.

There is discussion about this the over at Secret Project (http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3780.0). Lots of charts on performance and various options.

Here's some info on a few unbuilt SENIOR CROWN variations:

SR-71I

30 September 1980 iteration:
-AWG-9 radar
-four AIM-54 missiles
-anti-AWACS tasked

1 November 1982 iteration:
-APG-65 radar
-four AIM-120 missiles (80 nm range when fired at Mach 3.1 and 80,000 feet)
-anti-AWACS tasked
-secondary anti-bomber tasking

SR-71(Bx) (1976)

-nuclear strike aircraft
-four AGM-69 missiles (514 nm downrange/200 nm crossrange range when fired at Mach 3 and 80,000 feet)

Imagine if they did enter service as a silver bullet force, like the F-22, but were also made available to the closest of allies.

I recall reading that a substantial amount of titanium used in the SR-71s fabrication was sourced from the USSR, a production run of two to three hundred F-12s would need much more titanium and hence much greater effort in exploiting western reserves and developing more efficient and affordable extraction techniques, perhaps led by Australia's CSIRO, the Australian government being keep to exploit natural reserves and further strengthen strategic defence ties to the US.

End result, a cheaper but still expensive F-12 built in reasonable numbers (1000+?), attack / penetration versions developed. And of course this being me, an Australian silver bullet force of two fighter and one attack squadrons.

Given the similarities between the original J58-P-2 and the Gyron, I could see a Gyron Major with the same changes as made to produce a J58-P-20 as fitted to the various A-12/F-12/SR-71 variants, and fitted to a British variant (SR-71K?).

Gripen News @GripenNews
Not sure if this photo been up on the web before. Provided by Viggen pilot Per-Olof Eldh to Vi Menn. SR-71 with engine problems during #Baltic mission. Briefly violated Swedish airspace. (1977-1988 Viggen pilots came within firing range on 51 occasions)

Unstart? Note the right engine afterburner nozzle is fully open.

Similar English version here but without the photo: https://theaviationgeekclub.com/viggen-vs-blackbird-swedish-air-force-ja-37-fighter-pilots-able-achieve-radar-lock-legendary-sr-71-mach-3-spy-plane/

Not sure if this is the Bodo Express. Cannot make out the tail number. Bodo Express was 964.
