Title: Random whiffs you have found
Post by: GTX_Admin on January 05, 2012, 05:50:32 PM
Hi folks,

A place for those random whiff ideas you have discovered which don't really fit into any category.

Here's one:

Interesting. Looks like some basic 3D drawing and a simple render tool. This might even be a plane crafted for video gaming or flight sims.

They refer to its a Me509, but to me it looks more like the offspring of a mating between a Me309 and Me262...

Continue pointed bulge at root of wing forward to prop and all the way back.  Enhance it outward a little so there is slanted side to top and bottom of fuselage .   Put on a “V” tail, other appropriate touches, and it can be attempt to reduce RCS of propeller plane.   Radar absorbent  finish on propeller blades and hub (rest of plane?) , F-117 type glass and framing.
To me, picture hints at doing that.

Gnaahr! This new-fangled environment-friendly aluminium foil is useless. Someone's been into my brain and extracted the idea of an Ankylosaurus with a Roman crew operating a Scorpio. Of course, they had to go overboard and blow it out of proportion by using Ceratopsidae and the Third Reich. Typical!

I just wonder if that dino will keep in place or bolt when that 88 is fired! :-D

And despite the armored ridge plate behind the head, the beast should be wearing a "Pickelhaub".

4th post attempt- fingers crossed.

Heh - Dinotopia becomes Dinoreich....

If you wanted to build something like that onto a dinosaur model, you could do worse than start with some of these armoured train kits that are about at the moment: many of them have cars that are about the shape of those panniers....

I've thought about a modern version of samurai armour equipped with ERA tiles. :icon_ninja: Handy for stopping rifle-calibre bullets. Until the samurai has closed to katana-range. :icon_killbill:

I thought that you might like that patch  ;D  I'm wondering if the translation mightn't be a little funky though.

Can any Russian speakers confirm that "Стебель и Убеиaeт" is a reasonable translation for the motto "Stalk and Kill"? [Or should the latter be 'Убейте' ?]

Those are excellent, AGRA ! William Shatner as Jake Sully.... wouldn't mind seeing him fall out of those trees.

The fellow who crafted these actually used art styles, names of directors from posters as well as the period actors. Too bad he didn't do Star Wars.

More believable acting as well... I like the special effects in the 60s version. Look more in tune with the nature of the story.

Can you imagine Pulp Fiction with /that/ cast??

Harry Belafonte singing the Banana Boat Song in place of Ezekiel 25 17. "Say day ohh one more time m@#therf$%ker!"

The fellow who crafted these actually used art styles, names of directors from posters as well as the period actors. Too bad he didn't do Star Wars.

Its high quality Whiffing with great conception and delivery.

A 2012 Star Wars IV: A New Hope might be interesting as well.

Luke Skywalker: Jesse Eisenberg
Han Solo: Channing Tatum
Princess Leia: Emma Stone
Grand Moth Tarkin: Gary Oldman
Obi Wan Kenobi: Jeff Bridges
C3P0: Harvey Fierstein
R2D2: Peter Dinklage
Chewbacca: Yao Ming
Body of Darth Vader: Shaq
Voice of Darth Vader: Michael Clarke Duncan

A long time ago on another forum far, far away, I had an idea that fell flat on it's face (with a comic "boing"): what if enough of the Carry On team had lived long enough to do a Star Wars spoof called........

CARRY ON FOLLOW THAT SPACESHIP

It started with me thinking about a space ship that takes the mickey out of the Millenium Falcon in Star Wars. Since the latter was allegedly based on the shape of a hamburger with a bite out of it, the "Eon Turkey" is based on the shape of a half-eaten hotdog. It consists of a B-29 fuselage, sandwiched between two halves of a pop bottle, suitably greeblified, with the back end cut away in an arc where the engines are.

Now that got me thinking about the rest of the movie, the casting, and parody (non-sueable by Lucasfilm) names for the characters:

Lou Starstrider, a lowly famboy and our hero: Jim Dale

Princess Looka: Barbara Windsor (hairdo like a cream bun..)

Henry "Hands" Ohsolo, a womanising smuggler: Sid James

Tubewhacker, a big hairy "Nookie" and Ohsolo's mechanic/co-pilot: Bernard Bresslaw

Grand Boff Parkin, an Imperial commander: Kenneth Williams

Barf Radar, a Judda knight gone bad: Windsor Davies ("I find you lack of faith disturbing, you 'orrible little man!")

Wobi An Tabbitt aka "Ben", a Judda knight in exile: Frankie Howerd ("I am Wobi An Tabbitt, but you can call me Ben", "Ben Tabbitt?", "What? Eh? Cheeky Devil!")

I8-2Q4AP, a protocol droid: Charles Hawtrey

T4-2, a maintenance droid: (special effects)

"Hands" Ohsolo's ship: the Eon Turkey

Imperial Tie fighters: shaped like bow ties

Rebel R-Wing fighters: "What are those over there?", "They're R-Wings", "What! Our wings should be on our ship!"

I read those names for that 2012 Star Wars, and I have no clue who ANY of those actors are!!

Jesse Eisenberg star of The Social Network, Zombieland, plays geeks (non wimp version) and whiny slackers so perfect for Luke Skywalker.

Channing Tatum star of 21 Jump Street, Fighting, Step Up, plays rebel jocks with a bit of comedy so a good Han Solo.

Emma Stone star of Easy A, Superbad, plays sassie, independent go getter young women with a bit of comedy so a good Princess Leia.

Gary Oldman, come on surely you know who Gary Oldman is? Star of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Bram Stoker’s Dracula amongst many others. Has a great quiet ominous presence which goes well as Grand Moff Tarkin.

Jeff Bridges? The Dude, the Big Lebowski, star of True Grit, Tron, etc. Has a beard and would make a natural mystic desert hermit Obi Wan Kenobi.

Harvey Fierstein is a character actor known for his very gay, but gravelly and whiney voice. Best known for Jeff Goldblum’s boss in Independence Day. So a new take on Si3P0.

Peter Dinklage is here more as a joke because R2D2 would not need an actor with dwarfism to sit inside and rock him back and forth. Dinklage is the it character actor of the moment thanks to his role in Game of Thrones which is probably more to do with how good a character he has.

Lao Ming, Shaquille O’Neil – big basketball stars to wear the tall suits.

Michael Clarke Duncan the big guy from Green Mile as a very deep booming voice.

Aziz Ansari is a very popular American Muslim actor comedian star of Parks and Recreation. Very quick with something cool to say so would make a good Lando Calrissian.

Andy Serkis is the king of motion capture, played Gollum and Kong. The Frank Oz of the 21st Century so has to be Yoda.

Alan Rickman is another big star, was Hans Gruber in Diehard, Nottingham in Prince of Thieves, etc. Very good at being bad and evil so a great Emperor Palpatine. Already has a black robe.

Bobcat Goldthwait is a famous comedian from the 80s best known as the gang leader in Police Academy II and his crazy sounding voice. Has gone bald in recent years and has a real egg head with little baby face so would look fantastic under Darth Vader’s helmet. His voice would also be great saying “You werrrreehhhhhaoughh rIGHt Luke”.

Gary Oldman...

Jeff Bridges...

Harvey Fierstein

Okay, yes, I know those three.

Quote
Bobcat Goldthwait

"Uh... I *am* the police!" he says, while wearing a leather jacket that says "Death by Tire Iron" in Police Academy 3?

Love the Carry On inspired stuff.  Unfortunately, modern British cinema suggests that we'd need a time machine to achieve it as the craft has suffered over the intervening years.

Aye, I love the idea of a Leia who is blonde and constantly falling out of her scimpy white robe and the empire being run by old school British jobsworthes. The Robot Chicken and Family Guy spoofs of Star Wars (and remember Galaxy Quest) show just how much potential there is in these now stock sci fi stories to be ripped off for laughes. Though I do wish someone would make a What If Start Wars Episode I that was actually good.

Yeah! So I am slow in confirmation.  Dang!   :-X

Nevertheless, I didn't realize they planned to include Medium Mk.III; I hope I can mount some decent main gun on it.

I can only see the back 3/4 of the plane because of browser frames on my smart phone, but that's probably an advantage in this case. Looks like an Su-22 to me.

Cheers,

That's very nice indeed. The only nit you could pick is the lack of intake splitter plates, and that'd be easy enough to fix.

Since F-105 kits mould the intakes as part of the wing, you could simply graft su-22 wings onto the Thud fuselage, then add the intakes of your choice and blend them in. They look Skyhawk-ish, but those would be way too small, unless you were willing to sacrifice a 1/48th Scooter for a 1/72nd model. Viggen ones would be around the right size for the engine, and old Airfix Viggens are cheap and easy to get.

That was quick - nice one!

Yes, I though about blending the Su-22 swing-wing with the Thud's Ferri intakes. It certainly looks cool, but I'm not sure it would be possible, given the size of the spars connecting the pivot points to the fuselage: routing the intake ducting though one while keeping it strong enough would make the wing section unfeasibly thick.

You'd have to place the inlets far enough ahead of the wings to allow the ducting to sweep into the fuselage and the main intake where the spars would mate with major fuselage frames to carry the loads.  It wouldn't be impossible, but it would take some arranging.  The intake ducts do sweep in fairly quickly with the aux. inlets to the ducts being on the inboard wall of the main gear wells (until they got some variable blanking plates over those, the F-105 had problems getting the gear down on landing).

Quick? Nah, the profiles were done sometime last year.  ;)

You raise some interesting points regarding the intakes.  :) I didn't put too much thought into the internals when I bashed the profiles. Just went for the looks. I do remember though that I had to place a "spacer" between Thud fuselage and Fitter wings due to some alignment problems in the original profiles. That spacer adds about a foot of wing span per side between fuselage and wing pivot point.

Here's a section of a Su-22 wing cutaway:

I reckon 188, 147 and 148 are the main spars, with 203 a secondary spar. With the wing further outboard (more internal space in the fixed section) and the intake on the actual Thud sweeping in as elmayerle describes, it might just work. I guess the intake in the whif profile would go through where the 30mm cannons on the actual Fitter are (just ahead of the spar 203).

None of the "known" monster truck kits have a tread pattern like that in the image that I know of.  I have a couple of the 1:32nd scale MT kits in the stash and both of them are pretty much identical save for the truck body and the tyres/wheels are the usual aggressive v-shape pattern commonly seen on these things.

Wow - wonder if that's been anywhere near a wind tunnel: can't see the interactions between the passenger section and the engine "yoke" being that favourable...

Also wouldn't like to try to make the safety case for a civilian passenger liner using tilting engines to shorten it's landing/take-off run. What happens when one of them fails just after rotation in a mx weight take-off?

I think this is more in the Colani realm (or Bel Geddes). Ain't happening. Ever. At least some of Colani's stuff gets built, but it's usually a pretty shell over a mundane truck or car frame.

Did someone find a long lost Gerry Anderson archive and now claims this design as their own?  >:D

Actually, I hadn't seen the movie or read the book when I came up with it!  It was just a coincidence since it's obviously based on my name.  In fact, as I understand it, "Loginov" spelled with an "i" is relatively common Russian last name, something I also didn't know when I came up with the "loganov" moniker.

The designer of the the 45mm AT gun and almost all the anti-aircraft weapons used by the Soviet Union in WWII (25mm, 37mm, 76mm, 85mm) was Mikhail Loginov, for instance.

If you ever happened to play Close Combat III: The Russian Front, you'll know that every individual soldier in your unit was tracked throughout the war, along with a unique name, attributes, and service record.  The last names were all randomly selected from a list that Atomic Games came up with for the game.  The only exception was the soldier in the command squad that represented you, the player.  He had whatever name you entered.  When I played the Germans, the last name I typed in was "Hartke".  When I played as the Soviets, I used "Loganov".  Funny enough, I think one of the names that was randomly assigned to the gunner in my command Tiger one time was a soldier with the last name of "Henke".  Those are my cousins, from the same town in Germany where my family's from.  You don't have to go too many generations back in my family before you start getting Henkes.  Once, when I was playing the Soviets, a crewman in the command tank was named Loginov.  So, you had a Loganov and a Loginov in the same tank, assigned randomly.

Cheers,

Logan

From Missing Lynx-Forums, click on html or thumbnail image to view article:
Quote from: Mark Rau link=1/35th scale Spare parts zombie killer WIPdate=20140805 1:49 PM
This was built for my club Mad Maxx/ zombie killer vehicle build. (http://www.network54.com/Forum/110741/thread/1407260951/Spare+parts+zombie+killer+wip...1-35)

The story behind it is that it's an ex-police armored car that was pulled out of a junkyard, and re-built with whatever parts were available.

The hull is from a Tamiya Sd.Kfz. 222, and the turret is from an Italeri LAV-25. The rest is from the spare parts box(es), or scratch-built. The turret mounts a flamethrower (cobbled together from spare parts), and a .50 cal. The hull has a MG-34 mounted next to the driver. The cutting blade is scrap plastic, and a 'I' beam.
The rest of the fittings came from spare parts, or sheet styreen.

This was a blast to build, and I used up some of the mountain of parts!

Sorry for the poor quality pics, but I'm still getting the hang of posting them.

Gotta be honest, the "Hammerhead" does nothing for me.

The 3rd engine is awkward & the canards are both aesthetically too big & obstruct the pilot's low-forward view (the reason the cockpit is where it is & the most important aspect of a ground-attack aircraft).

Pwt32's Defiant Mk III AWAT:

Quote
History records that the Battle of Britain was won because of the bravery of the RAF pilots and the effective use of radar to direct English fighters onto the incoming Luftwaffe raids. Many believe that the radar sites along the shores of the British Islands provided that early warning. What is not generally known is the ground radar sites (specifically the transmitting stations) were bombed early in the battle and were permanently put out of action. For propaganda reasons and to prevent panic, the stations were reported as repaired and back in action immediately. What the Germans did not know was the core of the Radar system was the receiving stations which were never attacked and remained online throughout the battle.

Radar transmitters for the duration of the Battle of Britain were provided by 24 specially configured Bolton Paul Defiant fighters. Proven vulnerable in early battles, the air ministry started pulling these aircraft off the front lines for second line duties. A young RAF Lieutenant, temporarily assigned to a radar station in 1939, noted coverage might be increased 100 fold or more if the transmitter was actually flying at 5-8,000 feet. Based on that idea a transmitter was configured on a Miles Magister and tested successfully. With Dozens of Defiant aircraft available it was the quickest aircraft that could be loaded out and flown as a replacement transmitter. With the turret removed, there was a perfect spot to put the electronics. The Airborne Warning And Transmitting (AWAT) Composite Squadron 412 was quickly assembled with all members sworn to secrecy. Throughout the Battle of Britain, at least 5 defiant AWAT aircraft were always airborne and transmitting radio waves for the radar receiving stations to detect.

The AWAT aircraft had their engines replaced with larger Merlin engines and props to help handle the weight. Under the wings were 4 electrical generators powered by wind turbines. The rear turret was removed (and the weight saved) and replaced with transmission equipment. Antennas located on the fuselage provided 360 degree radio wave transmissions. Two fuel tanks were plumbed inboard of the landing gear and they were used to extend loiter time. The aircraft flew extended figure 8 patterns in their assigned sectors - a long boring mission but vital for Britain's defense. With black undersides and PRU Blue upper surfaces, these aircraft carried no call letters or ID except roundels and a single number on the fuselage side - 101 to 124.

The operation was so vital and yet so secret, AWAT Composite Squadron 412 was never officially recognized nor does it appear on any roster. As radar technology advanced in 1940, the "chain Home" stations were replaced with newer radar and the 22 remaining AWAT Defiants (2 were lost in accidents) were quietly destroyed and with them went their secret. At a special award ceremony each of the 24 pilots received the Victoria Cross for their bravery and dedication, but were not allowed to reveal their action and the medals themselves were taken back! At the ceremony, Churchill himself said to the pilots of the 412 composite squadron - "Never was so much owed by so many to so few...". Many of the men took comfort when they heard those same words repeated at a war time speech a few days later, for they knew who Churchill really spoke of in his comments...It is also not clear if the British Government finally released this secret project in the 1970's to help the United States develop the E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft.

There is only one known reference drawing of the Defiant Mk III AWAT aircraft. Even that is not 100% accurate as some models had the antenna's on the sides of the fuselage only and not all aircraft had the extra drop tanks.

Didn't know where else to put this wonderfully insane contraption!  >:D

Quote from: builder's comments
1/144 steampunk Schwere Geschütz Gerät prototype

It's a Grille by definition - self-propelled artillery.
This is a prototype, there will be some alterations to the etched components later.

Model scale is 1:144, but I think it could work for various gaming and diorama scales between HO and N.
In the designed scale, the main gun is a 20 inch, and 2 inch cannons on the small turrets.
Footprint would be size of a tennis court and I estimated it would weight between 600 and 1,000t.

1/72 X-29 Reciprocating Racer

Translated from the Japanese text:

And remodeling the Hasegawa 1/72 X-29. Decide the engine position in order to adjust the position of the center of gravity, we set the radiator located in the vicinity of canard. Engine is H (Engineering) type 24 cylinder. The ejection seat in the cockpit. Forward wing is a fly-by-wire employed in the computer control so maneuverability is quite sensitive. The canard is did something very dangerous, at the moment the canard has been stalled (from the relationship of the position of the center of gravity) nose beneath! !

At the time of takeoff and landing because it is low speed to stall mainly it is crash caution, at the moment that has stalled. It is scary. So square close shape like a stall difficult delta wing and the fuselage to the canard has been used. Canard machine is actually skipped (It is U con machine but) I tried to variously study to see.

Well, since no-one else has offered up any suggestions, here is the answer:  It's a Polish Air Force Su-22UM mated to a fattened-up F-4 Phantom radome, A-4 Skyhawk side intakes and the IRST/FLIR of a SAAB J35J Draken.  Was done by an Artist called Dr.Snufflebug.

Multiple plans to build all types of used Ilmailuvoimiemme model to his collection. You have probably Finland's largest collection of "blue and white" machines that are not in Finland ever had: D Funny idea.

To my delight I found that Hasegawa has returned again this model into production. This is quite the exact dimensions, shapes, and the detail drawings . Zoukei Muran outdo competitors light years better constructability, better osasovitteilla and ... cheaply price.

Painting is a good-looking. In particular, the tinted panels blends in very complex; do not remain out of sight, but do not jump to the eyes.

Is the surface of the front frame Canard hint B Grade, whether or not a signatory to the eyes properly functioning correctly?

This is where it all started, in April 2013! This was my first interpretation of Trumpeter's 1/48 Messeschmitt Me 509, imagining it having been built by the Bell Aircraft Company as the Airamamba, after the designs were captured by the Americans, Bell being chosen in view of their experience with mid-engined fighter designs. The second photo is my next interpretation of the same kit, mated with Me 262 engines and outer wings left over from my conversion of the Tamiya 262 A-1a into an HG III (third photo), as the imaginary Me 562. Hopefully both these latter builds will appear in future issues of SAMI, in the occasional 'Swallow Tails' section.

At last Satuday's IPMS-Seattle Spring Show in the Modelfy category (in Modelfy the subject can be anything as long as it uses parts from
a pre-determined kit or subject chosed by the previous year winner, this year the subject was Mustang, plane or car.)

I give you the MesserSpitWulfStang Mk. 0.  ;D

Built by Ken Murphy, who was the winner of the previous A-10 Modelfy and chose the Mustang subject for this year,
I kinda doubt Ken has even seen the drawings on this site.

They weren't for SPECTRE, they were for Spectral (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2106651/). The confusion is understandable, but at least a few early news sources got the story right at the time. Of course, it's much easier to clickbait people with James Bond, so once the first site made the error, the others didn't even bother to check anymore...

The modification is so extensive on this one (https://web.archive.org/web/20181105190647/http://www.geocities.jp/warspite2006/touitsu.html) that you wouldn't know this build is based a Shinano hull......

("PRJ" means "People's Republic of Japan", and "Tohitsu" means "Unification", for those interested in the nationality of the ship depicted.  I think I might steal the idea for a Shipbucket graph in the future......)

EDIT: Geocities is history, so link changed to Wayback Machine.

That is a nice looking carrier. It does look like they have gone with Super Flankers for planes for the carrier including a Berkut in the first picture. After translating I see that they are indeed Flankers.

From the same site, one of the idea out of an old fantasy novel series "Konpeki no Kantai" (https://web.archive.org/web/20181105190647/http://www.geocities.jp/warspite2006/jpennsylvania.html).

Re-boilered and with a clipper bow added; maximum speed 26.5 kt.

A, B, and X turrets removed.  Hangar and a large catapult added forward.  Hangar can accommodate three floatplane fighters and unknown number of surface-to-surface artillery rockets (both launched via the catapult).

From the spinoff of "Konpeki no Kantai", Shingen class aviation battleship of "Kyokujitsu no Kantai" (https://web.archive.org/web/20181105190647/http://www.geocities.jp/warspite2006/shingenclass.html).

(Yeah.  Firing those 16" guns to the port side seems like a very bad idea just from the look of it.  And my untrained mind is unable to think of how having all those weapons offset to the starboard side could be balanced......)

Also from the spinoff of "Konpeki no Kantai", Korou class aviation battlecruiser of "Kyokujitsu no Kantai" (https://web.archive.org/web/20181105190647/http://www.geocities.jp/warspite2006/korouclass.html).

Disclaimer: Any mention of the fantasy novel series "Konpeki no Kantai" and/or "Kyokujitsu no Kantai" does not and shall not reflect the political ideology of dy031101  ???

EDIT: Replaced the links with those in Wayback Machine.

Some more very interesting builds. I especially like the Shingen class aviation battleship. Though the balance issue does confound me as well since I doubt the flight deck is heavy enough to balance out those 3 armoured turrets and guns.

Great modelling none the less.

Found this on ARC. 1/72 Bird Models Lippisch DM-1 with NACA-modifications on Academy Lockheed Ventura PV-1

The DM-1 never flew, it just was tested in the wind tunnel. So my model shows a fictional test plane on a (also fictional) Lockheed Ventura PV-1 with a typical NACA-paint scheme.

Full build story is here (http://www.arcair.com/Gal14/13901-14000/gal13962-DM-1-Bruckelt/00.shtm).

The half-trackless looks like they ran out of running gear units &, rather than stop the assembly line, just used some truck rear axles they had lying about to finish them off.

The lower one looks more Sci Fi than WW2, wouldn't look out of place in a post-apocalyptic scene or exploring an alien planet.

Really not sure which was the more capable aircraft, the Bucc or the A-6, I suppose it could be argued that the A-6 was designed primariloy for land attack and the Bucc as an uber cruiser killer but at the end of the day I couldn't say which was better.  Though I suppose it could be argued the Bucc would have made a nice complement to the later Spey Corsairs and would have gone well with the F-14 if that had gone for evolved Spays as well.

The Antonov An-50 was a planned Soviet airliner with four turbojets. It was planned by Antonov in the first part of the 1970s. The aircraft was never built.

Antonov made the plans based on the An-24R, but it would have had four turbojets with 14.7 kN thrust each, instead of the two turbojets used earlier. The turbojets were planned to be built together with the undercarriage, under the inner wings. There were no other major changes planned. The plans were complete in 1972, but nothing had been built. There was no prototype.

It was planned to weigh 24600 kg gross, and it would have had a 490 km/h speed at 9400 m altitude.

Take the Amodel An-24 and add B-52 nacelles with a shortened pylon, widen it, use existing nacelles or drop tanks with plastic card to house the landing gear. .

Yup! I've saved them as references for the 1/72 F-15 & F-16 I have to build as RAAF aircraft, may buy a F-14 for the same purpose (triple-layered defences).

Hey Old Wombat:

I'm currently doing a WHIFF series in 1/72 -

A different ADF to what we got.

RAAF F15C's (2 SQNs),  F16C and CJ (3 SQN's total), F15E for strike (2 SQN's), plus some F111 for Recce and EF111 for Support, Hawk for Training and LIFT and A37 for FAC/Cairs.

Also a different RAN with a CAW on a NIMITZ Class Carrier - the CAW is F14, A7, A6, EA6B plus AV8B and Sea Harrier FRS1 for the Carrier or ADELAIDE class.

The Army has AH1 Cobra's for ARH, Apache's for firepower support, OV1D Elint, OV10 FAC, and Black Hawk, NH90 and CHinook for lift.

About half way thru - will post pics when I can find a site to host (I've dumped Photobucket!!)  :o

Adding suitable boom-equipped tankers or are the F-16 and F-15 variants equipped to do probe and drogue refueling?  (I've got some ideas for a retractable probe for the F-15).

@ Scran51:
I'm not giving the RAN carriers that large, more Forrestal/Kitty Hawk sized, as the CAG will comprise A-8's (going on to Rafale M's), S-2's (going on to S-3's), Buccaneers (poss. going on to navalised Rafale B's), plus helo's (Wessex/Seaking, et alia).

The RAM will have hand-me-down carriers & Tarawa/Wasp/America class LHD/LHA's, operating A-7's (going on to Rafale M's), Harriers/AV-8's, plus the usual suspect helo's (UH-1's, AH-1's, CH-53's, CH-46's/CH-47's & MH-60S's)

Army Air will be similar to RAM Air but with a few lighter aircraft thrown in for FAC, etc.

The RAAF is going to be purely defence & mid/long-range strategic strike. I'm still working on their catalogue, although land-based F-14's, F-15's & F-16's are definitely in the group.

@elmayerle:
Hadn't thought that far ahead, myself, but I'm figuring the RAAF going the Euro/naval route of probe-&-drogue (probably under gov't pressure to keep commonality).
Title: Re: Random whiffs you have found
Post by: elmayerle on September 01, 2017, 11:28:30 AM
Probe and drogue for the F-16 would be either the fixed probe, tying into the boom refueling receptacle that the Isrealis developed or the drop tank with extending probe that some other F-16 users employ.  My idea for the F-15 probe installation would tie into the fuel system where the boom receptacle is now and retract and fold down into the LERX, such as it is, ahead of it.  I'm scheming it for a navalized F-15.

The F-15 refuelling option was also discussed here:  http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=838.0 (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=838.0)

All the carrier aircraft (including the AV8 and Sea Harrier) have probe and drogue.

The F15/F16/F111 will have standard systems - I'm not planning on building large aircaft such as tankers etc.

In 1945 Japan became wise to the Manhattan Project, they then convinced America (through counter intelligence) they had their own version of the atomic bomb and the means to deliver it to the west coast of the USA using a modified Sen Toku I-400-class submarine and launching atomic torpedo-like missiles (later tested by the US Navy under the 'Jupiter' guise), therefore creating a nuclear stalemate and not ending the war in august 1945. Home defence against a 'regular' invasion became thus even more important than it already was, and defending an empire consisting of lots of islands called for fast, water-borne aircraft for reconnaissance, interception and anti shipping missions.

As the N1K2 Shiden Kai was at that moment arguably the Japanese Navy's best aircraft it's understandable they choose that proven airframe to experiment further with, and so the N1K1/2 was born, and later proved itself even more important as being the first Japanese single seater to launch a heat seeking missile in anger: the Igo-2-A fired against HMS Irreplaceable of the British Pacific Fleet: she was hit and sufficiently crippled to be out of commission until just before the end of the war.

The N1K1/2 was designed in October 1945 (though it's the Igo missile that dates this specific plane to 1946).
but the design for the original N1K1 Kyofu is from 1944, and the N1K2 Shinden Kai (the wheeled version) first became operational in 1945.

The right, de-cockpitted side has a different, experimental engine from the engine on the left side. You can tell that from the different exhaust, the air-inlet just below the vertical stabilizer, and the lengthened fuselage.

The Missile:
The missile between the fuselages is a swept wing Igo-2-A Anti Shipping Missile, made by Mitsubishi. Introduced in the closing stages of the war (November 1946 to be precise) it uses infra red (thus the world´s first ´heat seeker´, with the first batch delivered to the Imperial Navy about 10 years before the AIM-9 goes into production), has a solid-fuel rocket, and is small enough to be launched from fighterplanes instead of bombers.

The last one reminds me of the Ring World series by Larry Niven.
Very similar, but if I read the book correctly, it doesn't need a star, having it's own power source, and isn't as big in diameter as a ring world.

Called an "orbital" in Banks' books and still many, many times the surface area of any planet.

The orbitals orbit a star and rotate to provide roughly 1G on the inner surface. They're tilted to provide a night/day cycle and the tilt can be changed to provide seasons as well.

From the Facebook The What-If Model Builders Group.

This is a 1/144 scale 747-8F from Revell and a 1/144(?) scale Space Clipper Orion Shuttle from Moebius Models. The engine covers on the shuttle are molded with Miliput. The Pan Am decals on the 747 are a set from Draw Decal intended for a civilian C-5 Galaxy. The supports for the shuttle were scratch built. Builder is Steve Shaffer.

Yes, in fact an example is the 20mm Hispano used in the Boomerangs was reverse engineered and locally produced from a single example brought back from the middle east.

The other idea is Panzer III, IV and Stugs end up in Australia in the same way.

Now *that* is quite a beauty.  My upgraded B-47 will not be as extreme, but seeing this tempts me to use that camouflage pattern, or perhaps an "Asia Minor" for earlier Mideast operations.

Questions:
 - Why would you build such a large target?
I might suggest that this is the equivalent of a coastal artillery piece, i.e. more artillery than a tactical combat weapon. It certainly matches the aesthetic of a more long range, less exposed piece than a tank or APC.

Could be a ground-based orbital defence weapon sort of thing.

Sncaso 4070, at 1/72, made from scratch, plasticard, balsa, foam, aluminum.

The Delta Trijet Single-car delta trijet designed as part of the Minerva Program (which will lead to the Mirage IV), was based on a radically different approach to that of Dassault. Reduced to a minimum, it was based on a guide from the ground and a single-seat configuration, where the pilot was reduced to the role of a passenger? for the return flight.

Much smaller than its competitor, it was a very thin wing delta configuration, a Bicycle main gear train with two retractable out riggers, an single Atar engine and two Strato-Reactor mounted in pods.

FV 201 (A45) with 20-pounder would essentially be a FV 221 Caernarvon Mark II:

The turret can't train left as it will bump into the stupid MG thing on the hull. It probably can't rotate too far right, either as it appears the searchlight housing will also run into the MG thing.

I've always wondered what the VJ 101's weapons arrangements would have been had it entered operational service. I don't know if this model's weapons layout is WhatIf, but it looks far more warlike than I ever envisaged!!

However, it looks damned good! 8)

It was never meant to be an operational machine so there were no plans to carry anything.  I doubt it could carry anything close to that shown unless there was a serious engine upgrade.  Mind you, the model looks great.

Yeah, but it still strange that there's no hint of armament for the single-seat VJ 101C. A display model of one of the proposed 2-seat VJ 101C trainer variants - the VJ 101T-2 - was shown with a belly-mounted low-drag bomb. The earlier VJ 101A and VJ 101B were also illustrated armed (2 x wingtip AIM-9s for both with another 2 x belly-mounted Sidewinders on the VJ 101B). But no hint of armament for the single-seat VJ 101C.

Oddly, there don't seem to be any images of armament for the planned operational VJ 101D either  :(

Not sure how well those Sidewinders would last with the lift jet blasting out between them.

Of interest is the emphasis on the size difference between the P.1081 and the Hunter!

This looks like a US version of the  Westland Whirlwind. Maybe make a Whirlwind with two Allisons - although that may tear the Whirlwind apart...

Move main landing gear into the extra wing so that it retracts as on a stock P-51B.  I could see either standard P-51B radiator scoops on each nacelle or leading edge radiators, as on the Mosquito, between the nacelles and the fuselage.  I've been tempted to try something like this as an early iteration toward the P-82.

ToughSF @ToughSf

The mythical land carrier! Complete with battleship turrets and WWII-era bridge controls!
Tomi Väisänen gives it a far better art treatment than it deserves... it nearly seems plausible.

My comment: When the Navy and Army are combined and you only have enough funds to build one aircraft carrier, one armored dreadnaught and use analog technology to prevent cyber attacks.

Based on experience with Mega-Carrier would start with 1/200-350 or so aircraft carrier.   Pick armor kits for tracks you like.   One similar to this can be built given that you want to signup for it.

Very nice, 'cept the Feds shut them down after WW II when they tried it.  The ATSF (Santa Fe) railroad was definitely into developing an air cargo operation and both DC-4's and Dc-3's flew in a variation of their "Warbonnet" paint scheme.  Since D&H did a variation on that with the Alco PA-2's they purchased from the Santa Fe, 'twould be interesting to see that scheme, in their colors. on a modern aircraft.

No, it's a prone-pilot Hunter. The modeller merely took the experimental prone-pilot Gloster Meteor F8 a step further.

anyone care to guess what it started as and what went into it?

Masterpiece.   Now design a model box (Airfix, Lindberg, whatever) with this picture on it.

Start with a 1/72 SU-22=UM3 "Fitter", add intakes from a 1/48 A-4, and perhaps the nose, from the front of the windscreen forward, of a 1/48 F-4E or F-4F?

Cool. A Porax-38 starfighter?

Ref: The Porax-38 appears in Revenge of the Sith as a starfighter piloted by the native Utapauns during the Battle of Utapau. Although featured in a full two-page spread in the Revenge of the Sith Incredible Cross-Sections book, the fighter's role was significantly reduced in the final film. This was due to the fact that the P-38's digital model, being a late addition to the film, was not completed to the level originally planned, and so was relegated to a background craft.[55]

Nice!

I'm guessing that the ADEN guns mentioned in the backstory would be a fairly simple adaptation of the Luftwaffe's G.91R/3 30 mm DEFA mounts?

It might have required some engineering mods to fit the ADENs given the following comparison:

   30mm ADEN   30mm DEFA 552 (as fitted to G.91)
Length:   1.59–1.639 m   1.66 m
Barrel Length:   1.08 m   1.4 m
Weight:   ~106 kg    80 kg

Indeed! I hadn't realized that the ADEN was so much heavier than the DEFA  :o

That’s been on my to do list a long time! I don’t think I’ll use the Bandai parts however.
