Submarine Fighter
« on: February 16, 2014, 04:14:19 PM »
At our local model show last weekend I won a 1/48 scale Monogram Panther as part of the multi-draw raffle, something I wasn't really sure what to do with.  Two books I really enjoy are Sharuq and Stingray by William H Keith, which involve 'fighter subs'.  So a fighter sub from the Panther.  Basically clipped the wings and dropped the horizontal stabilisers.  Planning on adding a few more small details, the blue-green laser sensors and such like.  Put a few decals and markings on,  though under water they would be pretty pointless I guess.  Painted the canopy as in the book there was no visual seeing out only by sonar and blue-green laser.

Made a start on the base as well.  Awaiting the arrival of some scenic items to finish it off.  Looks more desert world then under sea at the moment.

And the armament arrived Friday.

Well I suppose.. why not.

So what sort of scale do you see this in ?
Probably answered my own question on looking back.. the torps are 1/48

Yeah 1/48.
here is a pic of the Stingray cover to show the idea.  the ones that look like jets are the American ones, the discs are Japanese.

Interesting: that's the same Bill Keith who was an early and influential contributor to the Traveller RPG.  :)

That's such a killer concept that I'm probably not the only one thinking "I wish I'd thought of that!"

Just brilliant!

He also wrote some pretty good BOLO stuff, and started his own 'universe', as it were, with a series
about fighting suits, ala' Gundam, Votoms, etc. Been a few years since I read any of them, but they
were pretty good as I recall.

I like the concept - can't wait to see the execution.

Thanks everyone.  Currently in the part of the roster that doesn't leave much time for models, but hopefully I will get some done on this one soon.

I always loved the concept of a "fighter-class" submersible  :) Great idea!
