PZL-?? Octomoose - "what-if" polish torpedo plane
« on: September 15, 2015, 02:34:30 AM »
Hello,

This will be basically a group project because there will be two involved modellers: Goonie and I.
We could be also known as a "Moose assasins" :)
Whole idea was probably born when my friendGoonie asked me to remove old paint from his PZL-37 Łoś (Moose) which he made being a novice modeller. I've tried to do it using "Cleanlux" (basically a "Future" remover) with poor results. Moose was put on "shelf of doom" for over two years. Some day Goonie and I started to talk about "what-if" polish bomber simillar to B-25H Mitchell. Of course "Moose" was our first (and last) candidate for some whiffing :) Then, idea evolved into something bigger :) Final concept was "frozen" when we decided to use 1/48 Tigercat as a second parts donor.
Overall concept:
-Tigercat nose with 4 Browning MGs
-Moose fuselage with new cockpit
- Ju-87 cannons in wings
- Tigercat's R-2800 engines with nacelles
-Moose wings with folding mechanism
-Tigercat landing gear (maybe with Moose wheels)
-new turret with two MGs
-opened bomb bay with two torpedoes
-HVAR's inder wings
- converted wing bays with bombs in one and additional fuel tank in another

New scheme (in fact, RAF scheme) with camo on top and white on bottom surfaces. Plane will be placed on carrier deck :)

Few photos from very start of work:

Next steps:
Fitting Tigercat engines onto Moose wings, shaping nose and rescribing all panel lines.

Goonie! I'm sure that we can show more now :)

Interesting.  Could be a candidate for an "Anteater" nickname.

Good idea :) But Anteater nickname was already used for trainer version for Do-335 :)

Doesn't mean that it can't be used here as well.

With pleasure, tomorrow I'm gonna put some photos of wings with new engines nacelles (my camera makes awful photos in artificial light conditions)

As a teaser let me post here a scheme of noseart and weapons mountings:

Congratulations! :-*
while, uh... to be honnest, I must confess I did not remember what the Real-World P.37 Los was looking like, and I had to check
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PZL.37_%C5%81o%C5%9B
to see and appreciate fully your transformation. Which I do! :-*
(Maybe, opposite, I will invent a P-38 Lightning with the nose a RW P.37, thanks for that too) ;)

EDIT: I have done it already (this is faster than building a model) Thanks again!

When I first saw this thread title I was looking at ericr's thread further down the page, and came here expecting something with antlers and tentacles, but this is better. Settling down with popcorn to watch the show.

As I remember I've promised (again) an update with some work progress for 'tommorow' about four days ago sooo here it is:  8)

After an old paintwork has been almost completely removed, some saw vs plastic work was done ;) :

Then, after cutting of the original engine nacelle there was an issue with wing flexibility. To solve the problem some plastic profiles were added to strengthen the construction and for further preparation of the base for Tigercat engine...

Few shots of 60% of model (the rest is in Artoor's hands  ;) ) after putting together wings with new engine nacelles:

 - one of the engines (glued & painted by Artoor):

 - bomb bay inside the wing:

Main armament (another 2 Browning's are in the way), let's pretend that those German 'Bordkanone' barrels for Ju-87 are, as a matter of fact, two 40 mm Bofors guns (just for the sake of plausibility ;) :

Probable localization of 'Bofors' gun (the bulk of weapon mechanism is going to use one of bomb bays areas inside the wing):

 - first variant:

- second variant (barrel of gun is partially hidden inside the wing structure):

@ Tophe:
Thank's for that twin boom versions :) To be honest, together with Artoor, we have been thinking about making similar fuselage to P-61 Black Widow or P-38 Lightning at the beginning, but It's just too much of transformation for that model and the original features of construction could be lost in the process.
But who knows what will hapend in future :D I still have about 3 to 4 poorly made 1/72 kits in stash so maybe one of them will be remade in that fashion ;)

Oooo ... this is looking great!

or 40mm bofors

Maybe this 30mm Bofors was an outgrowth of the original 25mm Bofors? Good size for a big aircraft gun.

My mistake, should be 40mm bofors (I've just messed it up with caliber of that Ju - 87 gun which is 37 mm).
