It's the spring of 1946, Due to the failure of the Anzio landing, the northern half of the italian peninsula and Rome is still in the hands of the forces of The Third Reich and Repubblica Sociale Italiana, but Il Duce Benito Mussolini has – for health reasons - moved his goverment to the Salo on the shores of Lake Garda.
Here he's busy planning to hit back on the allied. His favorite targets are Malta and Gibraltar. But to hit these targets his airforce - Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana – needs long range bombers and escort fighters.
Enter Macchi C.205 Bifosoliera. This aircraft was based on the very succesfull C.205 Veltro and was very quicly put into production. In the spring of 1946 they entered service and were escorting the bombers attacking Gibraltar in support of the spanish invasion of The Rock.
My What-if model will be based on an old Frog Macchi C.202 Folgore, a leftover fuselage and pieces found in my private scrapyard.
-
I remember that old Frog Folgore with fondness. Looking forward to this
-
Works for me as well. Looking forward to how it turns our
-
Going to be very interesting indeed. I will be avidly watching.
-
All the bits and pieces gathered. Let the building begin.
-
The fuselage from my scrapyard have lost it's cockpitt and with the help of plasticcard and putty it's turned into the right hand fuselage.
-
The wing are taking shape
-
The work on the left hand fuselage have started
-
Fuselages almost ready. The new ruders look a bit Bf 109G-10ish !
-
The fuselages meet the wing for the first time. They nearly fit !
-
I can only say one thing :D
Yeah baby !!! Really coming along
-
It's coming together nicely. What are you planning for paint?

Looking a little like this one I sketched up years ago:

I haven't decided the paint scheme yet. But there are many options. The ANR in late war had fighters finished in 1) sand and spinach 2) smoke rings 3) herring bone 4) Luftwaffe greys and 5) bottle green. And some combinations!
At present I have a combination of Luftwaffe greys and smoke rings mostly in mind. But .....

The FIAT G.55 Bifusioliera. I started with this drawing, but thought, that FOUR tail planes looked too odd.

Here are some of my options
-
All the pieces glued together. In the end I opted for the original Macchi proposal with four tailplanes.
-
It do look a bit wierd, but it's different from the Reggiani Re.2005 proposal
-
And the FIAT G.55 proposal, know as G.58
-
Must say I rather like the last (3-colour) scheme.

It would look good in that scheme; I'm slightly more partial to the 'banded' scheme of 22-2.
I have three of these kits - been thing about the trimotor IMAM Ro. 67 for a while. ;)

Really nice

Painting almost done

Is eye confusing. Good job !

So I made it in time. Was not sure that I would have the time to finish the model. My mother-in-law died (91 years old) and I had to go to the west of my country for the funeral. And tomorrow I'm attending my youngest daughters defence of her PhD-thesis in advanced chemistry in Copenhagen, which is in the east of the country.
But I made. So here is:

Thanks. My daugthers defence went very well. And DTU means Denmarks Technical University. And I was wrong. Her defence was at The University of Copenhagen. Her candidate degree was taken at DTU. A confused father !

Aren't we all, when it comes to daughters? ???
