The R-6 "Icarus" was developed by Consolidated (Convair) and Avro Canada in the late 40's as a high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. It flew operationally with the RCAF, USAF, RAF and RAAF. For a short period in the early 50's a few were leased to the French AF. They flew a number of successful missions during the Korean War. NASA acquired 3 of these in 1953 for high altitude missions, including photo mapping, air sampling, chase planes and other missions.

In at the wire. The Yo-Granville Stratospheric The second photo shows the landing cockpit, which contained
full dual controls.
