Magnifier Ford Gt40
« on: December 09, 2020, 05:17:17 AM »

Hi all well this arrived today Admittedly I had to wait a while (I ordered it on 27 oct with my birthday money) Let me tell you it was well worth the wait and for 68 quid incredible value for money.

I knew there were some errors on it from watching other builds of it.

The quality of the kit has surprised me, it is incredible,

For instance look at the quality of the chrome

Unfortunately its wrong (not even sure if you can chrome an engine block) no matter 5 mind in bleach and that problem is cured

And im not sure why they went to the trouble of pre painting the top of the engine gold as that's wrong too.

Hi all, in the reviews I've read of this kit it has said to ditch the kit supplied braided hoses as the fray and fall apart when cut, don't, just spray them with your missus hairspray (don't tell her though)

It seems a great kit but there is no ford moulds or insignia anywhere on the kit, I assume that's a copyright issue to do with it originally being a trumpeter kit, just a small point but I thought I would mention it.

If you wanted you could always get decals for that.

There is no distributor supplied in the GT40 kit, glass beads to the rescue
I've added the carb to the engine (I really like this kit the fit of everything is really good)

Hi all the distributor is made and installed

Sprayed the floor pan

Tried the engine in it.

No idea where the coil is placed on this car so left an extra long ht coil lead.

Trial of the body on the car.

I notice there is a nice cutout in the headlight housing for the LEDs and a nice round hole for the front indicators

Just don't know where the rear indicators go, there only seem to be main lights and brake lights there.

Coming together beautifully

... Just don't know where the rear indicators go, there only seem to be main lights and brake lights there.

Since the original GT40s were hand-built, the tail lights were sourced from different car makes. Earliest tail lights were from European cars (don't known which types) but later ones came from T-Birds or from Corsairs. So, rather depends upon which exact GT40 you are building ...

Started lighting up the GT40, just got to figure out how to make the indicators flash and how to add the fibre optics for lighting up the dashboard

Indeed. Excellent looking build

I looked back at the box top and saw the markings. So, your kit is for the GT40 Mk.IIB chassis No. P/1031 as she appeared in 1966 - as race number 2, dark blue paint, single 4-bbl Holley carburettor, twin rear-deck scoops, and twin aluminum 'suitcases' (for Le Mans). BTW, this car won the 1966 Reims 12 Hours event.

After its 427 later seized, the car was 'hybridized' with parts from P/1047. That second car's chassis number was re-assigned to the former 'Blue 2' ... with chassis number plates being switched around for slightly shady racing reasons. This car re-appeared for the 1967 season and that's where is gets even weirder.

One GT40 Mk.IIB (chassis No. P/1047) appeared as 'Light Blue, race No.57) alongside a revitalized - or re-number plated  ;) - chassis No. P/1031 (maroon, race No.5). [1] So why am I telling you all this? Well, chassis No. P/1047 has been preserved (as 'Light Blue 1') at the Revs Institute Collection in Florida. The attach photo of the rear end clearly shows 1966 Chevrolet Corsair taillights. So, taillight mystery solved  :D

https://revsinstitute.org/the-collection/1966-1967-ford-gt40-mark-ii-b/

[1] The Revs Institute says P/1031 No.5 was 'gold' in 1967, confusing it with 1966's race No.5. BTW, the distinguishing features for 1967 were twin 4-bbl carburettors and wider tires (necessitating 'flared' wheel arches to stay within 'covered wheels' rules).

Things will slow down on this for a while as I'm waiting for a flasher circuit board for the indicators, some fibre optics for the dashboard and some switches to operate all the lights, all due mid to late February.

Anyway here is the next update on this awesome kit.

Well the fibre optics arrived ahead of schedule so I tried them out, well pleased with the results got 2 more to add for the indicators but have to wait for the flasher circuit board.

Well I've wasted all weekend trying to get flashing indicators to work (I even bought so called flashing leds, which they didnt) so I've admitted defeat it won't have operating indicators, heres the next installment of the GT40

There is 1 other thing missing from this kit, there is no indicator stalk (which is also the main beam ) luckily its a very simple set up so easy to scratch build also the steering shaft is too long and protrudes too far into the cabin (unfortunately I don't have the equipment to alter that but if you had a mill you could)
