Hinamaru Havoc II
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:00:57 AM »

This is the Cockpit for the 1/72 Testors ATB. Not much to see so I didn't really bother going too crazy (test fits revealed you can barely see the seats!) I hit it with black and then tried to go over it softly with brown to create a fade effect. Actually worked ok, just hard to see in the pics (And impossible to see when the model is sealed!)

White on. The Gray circles are Lo-vis Hinamarus. I know that pink is technically the "correct" color in this case but I just thought gray would look better.  ==)

I think it has a perfect WWII look on account of it being so darn rounded all over!

Strangely enough Black, which is normally a forgivable color wasn't working with my airbrush. So I decided to spray paint it, then go over it later with the Airbrush to keep the weathered look consistant. Tamiya Nato Black was a perfect match so I lightened it with a couple white drops. This picture shows it really well!

Big wad of masking tape!

Inspiration.^ As I look it appears I missed a spot I should have painted black! Err! (between to the two finger like patterns in the center) Might be Too late to change it now... still deciding  :icon_ninja:

Most of the Decals have been cooperative but the Meatballs are a disaster. I still havn't decided how to handle it. Should I take them all off and start again? try cutting or sanding them??  :(

been working on the Landing Gear AKA undercarriage in the meantime.

landing gear Still in progress but the Aircraft itself is basically finished.   8) ... still deciding if I want to add that Black portion I missed  :-\

Special thanks to RussC AKA "The Flying Wing King" for the inspiration  ;)

Don't worry about the missing black area.  Doesn't need it IMHO.
And love the lo-vis roundels under the wing.  Killer idea and I'm totally stealing it! :icon_ninja:

If the black is gonna nag at you everytime you look at the model go ahead and add it, from my perspective it doesn't need it and if you hadn't mentioned it nobody would have noticed. It looks great either way.  :)

Wow that's killer, Mr Tomcat! I'll echo some of the others and say only go over that black spot if it's bothering you. I think a topcoat will help the cracking decals, but in the shots taken from a little bit back, I can't see any problem with the hinomorus.

What an inspired idea and masterfully executed!

I ended up sanding them down to fix them. Luckily the underside meatballs of the decal sheet were the same size (Minus the white outline) So I just redid those and it did a lot better.

Thank you everyone! Sound advice from all! I am just going to have to think about that black spot. I removed the cockpit masks and was very happy with it. One of those moments where all is right with the model, turned out much better than I would have hoped! So I might just let it go...

The camo was going to be splinter pattern, but I have always like that Aircraft Carrier Camo and suddenly I realized, I will probably never paint another aircraft model so big and flat like a carrier's deck ever again! So I picked the colors and went for it.

Gorgeous work on what I know is something of a bear of a kit.  One little correction though, it's a Revell Kit, Testor's does the actual ATB or B-2A in 1/72.

For backstory, first a name is needed. Usually for bombers, big mighty objects like mountains or rivers. Fujiyama was already taken for a bomber project.

Maybe UNZEN which is a active volcano in the Southern Islands. Longer names of the 2 most active peaks are Unzendake and Fugendake.

  Once again...Great build !

If you placed the G4M nose at the head of that design, combined with the wing design there, it would actually look a lot like a Vulcan w/o tail and underwing inlets instead of the leading edge.

A few last beauty shots:

Still working on the back story... Have some good ideas though:

*Tall undercarriage to help in the loading of these:

* Mitsubishi or Nakajima (?)

*Thanks to RussC, it will be called UNZEN by Japan and JAMIE by the Allies.

* What if world 1950/60s  after the axis and allies develop Atomic weapons around 1944, causing an arms race and a "hot and cold" war with spasms of mass destruction.

Yes , thanks especially for the front view, I never built or bought that kit and wondered what its front profile looked like.

Mitsubishi or Nakajima would almost be a coin flip as they both built each others designs and both were engine and airframe makers.

Bought this B-17F from Cliffy B and I noted that this old 1/72 Revell kit really does not look like a B-17  So I cut out sections of the wings to save shelf space (for the back story it is meant to make it faster!) Lengthened the engine nacelles with 1/48 F-14 Exhausts (which also added some much needed detail) And then cut the fronts off of the 1/48 engine faces for the spinners on the props. The tail fins are from an old and busted 1/48 A-10. It was supposed to be a quick project but like all my builds took longer than expected!

The above Nakajima "Ben" (yes I named it after me!) Uses P-47 wings for fins and Mitsu Zero cowls for engine exhausts.

Another blast from the past... still consider it some of my better work.

This closely looks like a real-world flying machine, picture a improvement to the existing 4 engine design dogma by assimilating the US heavies of the day (1943) plus the Lancaster and Halifax and meld with the Nakajima G5N. What would emerge would look like this.

As for the Tomcats and Arado, its just tons of fun, and the overall orange one is really  :-*

I got this 1/48 B-29 from an Ebay auction really cheap and already built. The seller wanted to cancel the transaction because he didn't know how to ship it but I convinced him he could cut it up and I wouldnt be upset, so long as i got it:

But then it became a bit of an albatross, the original idea I had for it, didn't really work out so I was stuck with a very big model, that I needed to make smaller somehow kicked around a lot of ideas, asked for help here as well, and finally decided to make it a kind of Japanese Mig-23 Flogger:

Its still in progress but I got a lot done on the engines, and epoxied the front and back half together (no pic of that sorry) . Still a lot of work left.

Made from Otaki "Jacks" in 1/48 scale with parts of a Monogram Mig-29 Drop tank half added. BTW if you are ever looking for a prop that is a ready made lookin jet engine this kit fits the bill. Plan on doing a jet version of it and ordering a few more for other big jet looking projects.

I don't know how in the heck you manage to continually top your own work, but that kind of talent is so far off the scale it's astounding. Those engines are gems in their own right too.

I really like your SuperF-14MiniFortress, Mr Tomcat!

Brian da Basher

Still trying to get that show back on the road but its pretty complex  :-\  Probably won't be able to finish it anytime soon... but its still going here and there.

Just finished this today! Its far from perfect. I got an old beat up 1/32 109 that was missing the cowling and canopy. A big restoration project ensued but I soon ran out of steam and could not figure out what to do after stripping the paint. I didn't want to take parts from another fresh 109 to make it work and I didn't want to cast anything either. I planned to make it a Radial for some time but then realized that a P-38 prop and spinner from another project fit the bill, and the "Mike" was back on! So I used styrene to bolster and cover the gaps and used a 1/48 Raiden canopy cut to fit. (radians have big canopies so its not too small for 1/32) The wash on the underside is not that hot, it was still flat and not glossed so when I washed it stayed!! ::) Used fine sand paper to get some of it off. Its painted with Rattle bombs.  finished with some pastels and the decals came from the spares box. SWMBO helped me apply them because she is the best!

So the "Mighty Mike" is finished. Its kind of odd looking, I can't decide if it looks like a LaGG or P-40 or Ki-61 or 109... I do like it though. It sure looks Japanese to me!

Kind of makes you wonder what a JASDF F-14 Tomcat would look like in some of the special markings that were used on their F-15 fleet.

I do plan on building an 1/32 F-14D(J) in this scheme:

(best picture i could find  ::) )
With all the resin sets I have collected over the years

Very proud of this one, exceeded all expectations:

A6M(classified variant) Zero, Tokyo 1945

Was looking for a nice OOB build that was supposed to be quick (that should get a big LOL at this point) Using rattlebombs to practice my Sci Fi striping/masking patterns. picked the 1/48 HAse Zero out of the stash. scheme is based on the Homeworld Elite style, with stripes cut and applied using "the rule of cool" . I stuck to a pretty basic color pallette as well. Black, gray, white, and silver. The fuselage got a terribly pebbley finish when exposed to too much over spray. Much sanding ensued. I managed to smooth it out well enough but could not rid it of a chalky residue tried everything, soap, water, rubbing alcohol, tac rags, nothing seemed to work. So realizing it was a make or break moment I dipped the tail tip in Future and it seemed to fix it! So gloss coats and decals followed and then I put it all together over the last few days. Its not perfect (if the seams count as recessed detail my zero has lots!) but that's how it goes when you paint everything separately and bring it together at the end  without PSRing and repainting. Very fun to do an OOB build.

My backstory is that these specially armed and equipped secretive Zeros escorted VIP transports after Adm. Yamamato's death.

Quite happy with the result.

Those big F-15 murals on 50th anniversary JASDF planes are incredible. On a Variable geo machine, it might not be so easy. The F-14 has wing gloves and some practically Soviet looking actuator covers on top.

My fave JASDF bird scheme is the Cherry Blossom Mountain, followed closely by (what else) Shiro Ryu.

Believe me I know!!  :icon_nif: Had to mask over and around them more than a few times! I would paint the every intricate wings separately too. Could also remove them and add stiffing plates instead... The joy of what if!!  :)

So a couple nights ago I had way too much coffee and started getting struck by some excellent Japanese ideas. Why am I telling you this and not showing you wonderful pics of mangled plastic? Because all of my WWII stuff books, kits, etc is still at my brother's house over 800 miles away  :icon_crap: So I have been sketching up a storm and am asking him to send me a few of the smaller boxes so I can get started. Its kind of hard to explain, but basically my new strategy is "throw the rules book out the window"

I've learned you really can't fight inspiration, so I just hope I get some stuff here in time to be of use and not before I have moved onto the next big thing that will be collecting dust in a week  ;D

In the mean time here are some pretty pictures:

You remember that? Well the good news is I brought that one back too, and I am taking a look at finishing it. I have had to try and figure out where I was when I left off and what to do next!!  :-\

I grabbed this one too and hope to do complete soon. Its going to be in a Modeller's alliance GB (shelf queen II) hence the phone in the picture.
I got this idea from the late Chris, AKA PanzerWulff I PMed him about it and asked to use his idea way back in 2010:

Quote
I used the Tamiya "Birdcage" corsair in 1/48 for mine, the japanese didn't have a way to do bubble type canopies so the framed canopy looks more the part.the other major appearance change was adding a spinner for the prop it changes the lines of the corsair's nose and make it feel different than the unspinnered prop.Other than that I built the kit oob and painted it in IJN colors. It's cool that my "Kaizoku"(japanese for Pirate) inspired you to do one I can't wait to see it
Chris

his original thread is here:

http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,11392.0/highlight,panzerwulff+corsair.html

hoping to finish this one as a tribute to him even though he is not here to see it.

Here is the P-38/Dinah I'm entering it too:

Cool picture I found:

Scheme based on this Ki-84 by Steve Hustad who does marvelous 1/72 scale Japanese fighters. Look at that!! ^

So this is kind of a weird one, because its one where I am actually "working backwards" painting everything and then going after the cockpit! Unfortunately this is just not going to be a contest winner, Its being built from spare parts from a 1/48 scale zero, (remember this is a 1/72 scale corsair!) I don't have any proper landing gear, and I am just happy to make it a solid 3 foot model/weekend project. I plan on going with an even better rendition of Chris's Corsair in 1/48 in the future where I can do it up right from the start. Its kind of disappointing but its going to look better finished on a shelf than languishing boxed in a basement.

Weekend project goes on! I picked a pretty solid color but it stayed tacky for 72 hours, so the Monday deadline was blown on step one

Masked off the anti-glare. Like all good masking there is a 60 second to 1 second ratio of masking to painting. This took about 5 minutes to mask and 5 second to paint!

Green prop on! The flat coat should tone it down a tad later on

Slightly blurry pic of the Decals. These fought me like crazy I went through 3 decal sheets and all of them fractured or vaporized. This forced me to have to use larger sized Meatballs on the fuselage than the wings which sucks because they would have been perfect reversed :( They are too small on the wings and too big on the Fuselage! Doh! but it is what it is, I was happy at this point to get anything.  Never has been putting on 10 decals taken me 90 minutes!!

Using a pencil to "make metal"

Not as much paint chipping as on the Ki-84 that inspired the scheme, but I like it

I was shocked at how user friendly that silver pencil method was!

Brush painted the underside. This was one of those excellent bench sessions where everything worked out exactly as you wanted and it was wonderfully refreshing to be building a model.

The prop fought me a bit on the yellow tips and masking, but its looking very good:

I have moved and am starting a new job, along with the rug rat, which continues to exist... I thought it was just a temporary M-F 9-5 gig, but apparently its much longer hours, like 24/7/365 for 18 years. 7 months down at least. SWMBO says I can teach him to drink and curse someday as a reward, but boy does 10 years seem like a long way away. With life getting so crazy I can't even set up my bench, I'm still trying to unpack and organize and I have a ways to go (maybe months) before I am settled in. But I am dying to do SOMETHING! So I found my old Japanese P-38, and I am going to rescribe it, and get it refurbished. No idea how far I will take it exactly, and what I will alter but it should help get the ball rolling. In the meantime I am also going to try and sketch and even give some pixels a shot to keep the creative, sleep deprived juices flowing.

"Before" shots

Engine. I am going to drill a new hole so the new props will be centered to make it look more like a radial

these are the implements of desctruction, bagged so I can move to a fresh flat surface and get something done an hour at a time before packing things away.

Some Flags I downloaded and then altered in Paint. Its basic, but its something I was thinking they could be IJA unit flags, for infantry or armored divisions:

pretty simple to do just took what others had done and added a spot.

In other news, I have unpacked my japanese military books and had forgotten just how many I had, and how many are extremely in depth so there is a lot of ideas to find. I also checked my computer and through a lot of right click saving and other DLing have over 7,000 japanese pictures over the years including whifs  :)

:-* Weird Japanese P-38... Is this a Lightning with radial engines? Will there be huge spinners with no frontal air-intake? (to justify the rear coolers on the booms) I know some rare radials were liquid-cooled, is that the explanation? or artistic fantasy? ;)

That can change in a heartbeat. Make hay while the sun shines!
