1/72 Armstrong Whitworth A.W. 45 Arcturus

I was scanning the forum and it dawned on me that Messrs Armstrong and Whitworth have not gotten their fair share of Whifdom.

So here is my first of 5 A.W. aircraft which were successful in their own right but got forgotten by the more "sexy" designs.

The A.W. 45 Arcturus is a high altitude fighter use against the Bv. 155 . It is composed of components from no less than 6 kits.









I wanted to show the bits before I take it to the paint shop.

That's an absolutely beautiful R2Y2 and just the way I always envisioned it.

I have to say that I love the Arcturus and those very high aspect-ratio wings.  I don't know how maneuverable it would be, but it ought to really get up high.

The victims are:

Academy Mk. XIVC/E for the fuselage and extra cannons
Aoshima Ta-152 for the outer wings
Horz stabs are from the spares dept so I don't remember
Revell P-47M for the dorsal fillet
Fine Molds R2Y1 for the propeller
Academy Tempest V for the drop tanks (not shown)

@Evan: The R2Y2 is not mine but yes it is very pretty with the jets. I maybe swapping wings on one my R2Y1s.

That version of the R2Y2 is the only one that makes sense to me.  The drawings of one with fuselage-mounted engines and an intake replacing the prop just wouldn't work with the turbojet engines of that era, the intake losses would be extreme.  Now, I have schemed a R2Y3 with fuselage mounted engines with wingroot intakes and swept wings (something of a Me P.1100-II crossed with a R2Y2 look).

Still, what you've got here is gorgeous.

@Evan: this R2Y2 is someone else's. It's the only image I could find of it. The R2Y1 and the Revell P.1099 have the characteristics to become something else.

I was also thinking of making one Turbo prop powered.

I'm getting better. This build took only 10 months.











It is painted in Greek Air Force markings after being refurbished post RAF service. Ferry drop tanks are installed for the delivery flight.

Decals are from Tigerhead 72002 Greek Spitfires. They did not want to settle down on the Tamiya lacquer. Needed lots of Mircosol.

The mod on those nice long wings appears expert to my eye! If I tried that, gaps would probably abound...

This beauty really looks the part. I bet you could gaslight more than a few with it.

That was 10 months very well spent!
