Title: Goonie's Sci-Fi thread
Post by: Goonie on May 24, 2014, 03:51:32 AM
Because I've got quite a lot of unfinished or planned to do Sci-Fi models, I would like to create a single thread for them.

First one would be Martian HEMMT escort truck, as I have mentioned in this topic http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4280.0 (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4280.0) I'm going to build escort truck for convoys transporting supplies from space port to the mining facilities on Mars.

As a base I'm using Italeri "HEMMT Gun Truck", with AFV Club "Remote Weapon System" on roof gun port. Original tires will be replace with Lego balloon wheels (they are more than 2x wider than the original + only 3 mm bigger in diameter than original one) and finally on the back of truck I'm going to scratch build some sort of autonomic rail gun (similar to Phalanx CIWS).

Whole idea for the model is the result of visiting this site: http://www.ga.com/railgun-systems (http://www.ga.com/railgun-systems) and large disappointment when I had discovered that HEMMT with Phalanx system already exists ;)
After all I have also red somewhere, that Oshkosh is trying to adapt HEMMT design to almost any possible task, so why not use it on Mars?  :D
After a lot of reading on problem of adequate propulsion system for vehicles on Mars I've decided to ad some containers for liquid O2 and other gases required for effective burn of methane in engine. Next problem would be an adequate amount of power which rail gun will use during combat (as I've noticed its quite unpractical at the moment: http://www.janes.com/article/28774/ausa-2013-general-atomics-unveils-blitzer-land-based-railgun (http://www.janes.com/article/28774/ausa-2013-general-atomics-unveils-blitzer-land-based-railgun) it looks like that most space is used by energy generators/fuel cells), so I've decided to scratchbuild some sort of fission battery. About 2 years ago I've red in "Focus" that some corporations are trying to create nuclear batteries for developing cities, so why not decrease it in size an implement on vehicle in future, especially that on Mars there is almost nothing (except possible Human settlers  ;) ) that could be harmed in any case of radiation leak.

and here are some photos:

Those lego wheels with the inserted hubs look awesome! They'd work for many projects, post apoc and sci-fi.

The wheels do look great, but I bet it costs a fortune to buy a set if you can't pick some up 2nd hand.

To be honest i bought all of them for equivalent of 10 USD on some ebay like polish portal (yellow are much cheaper than white od dark grey).

Once again thanks for kind words :D
Anyway I will have to find some way to get rid of "Lego Group" markings on tires. It looks to strange even for my standards  ;)

Oh and I've got one importatnt question about some element of HEMMT. Is it an air filter (part marked red on photo below)?

Finally I've made some progress with the model so here are few photos of it:

1. Early attempts to fix the whells:
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/Martian%20HEMMT/19_zps888b02ed.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/Martian%20HEMMT/19_zps888b02ed.jpg.html)
I turns out that original suspension is a bit too small for them, distance between whells was minimal + pivots was to fragile and they tend to bend somewhat when I had mounted the wheels. Later I've decided to modify the suspension in a manner that whells are mounted now on Lego pins instead of original pivots:
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/Martian%20HEMMT/22_zps4d7b7bb6.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/Martian%20HEMMT/22_zps4d7b7bb6.jpg.html)
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/Martian%20HEMMT/23_zpsb26a2405.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/Martian%20HEMMT/23_zpsb26a2405.jpg.html)
Still it's not perfect, but in my opinion it looks much better now and way more solid.

2. In mean time I've thought that the asymmetric position of main armament would be much more interesting than the previous one:
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/Martian%20HEMMT/24_zps88b9d2d7.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/Martian%20HEMMT/24_zps88b9d2d7.jpg.html)
That black part behind gun platform is some protection cap from old CPU and works perfect as socket for nuclear battery, speaking of which:
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/Martian%20HEMMT/20_zps1ae96104.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/Martian%20HEMMT/20_zps1ae96104.jpg.html)
(original petrol tank is under modification to resemble a bit more the gas tank)

3. Progress so far:

It's been a while since last update of topic but I have stuck with painting the suspension of Hemmt. Normally I'm using Vallejo acrylic paints but recently I was forced to bought 2 model master acrylic paints. Initially everything goes well (Fe. cannon in last update), but after  putting down first layer of paint it starts to split up for two colours + adding another layers of paint doesn't change anything except that some ugly stains appeared :icon_sueno:
So I'll just need to remove the paint and finally buy air brush together with air compressor but, well, I just don't have mood for first part of it and don't have funds for second one at the moment...

But thanks to taiidantomcat thread 'TTomcat's Tomcats' ( http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4386.0 (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=4386.0) ), especially to last updates I've started another project - Avro Arcturus, heavy space fighter.
In a few words I'll try to make an old school looking space fighter with cameo similar to that from 'TTomcat's Tomcats'  8)

The donor kit was 'Gloster Javelin FAW. Mk 7/FAW. Mk 9' made by 'Plastyk' but, to be honest, moulds cames from Novo or Frog and are totally worn out (I've remember that about 20 years ago when I was sticking together my first or second model, which happend to be the same Gloster Javelin kit, details on model were definitely less blurry ;) ).
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/Avro%20Arcturus%20heavy%20space%20fighter/01_zps6133f4a6.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/Avro%20Arcturus%20heavy%20space%20fighter/01_zps6133f4a6.jpg.html)

In-box (model itself with resin pilot seats):
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/Avro%20Arcturus%20heavy%20space%20fighter/02_zps2ec9eb38.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/Avro%20Arcturus%20heavy%20space%20fighter/02_zps2ec9eb38.jpg.html)

After two days and nights of scratch jutsu, ta dam ;D :

At moment being model contains tail wings from F-16 together with vertical stabilizer, two bolters from Wh40k, analog TV antenna cable connectors (converted to jets) + lots more modeling junk.

About two hours ago I've added basic colours (ultramarine + gun metal):
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/Avro%20Arcturus%20heavy%20space%20fighter/14_zps0e01a697.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/Avro%20Arcturus%20heavy%20space%20fighter/14_zps0e01a697.jpg.html)
(paint has a much darker hue; this intriguing colour is a result of my photo skills and a bit obsolete camera)

Now I'm waiting for paint to dry and will add later a few more colours 8)

So...cleaning of model and primer proved to be a perfect solution. Layer of paint is marvelous :)
Your mods are kind of refreshing change for a bit old model. I really like where this one going :) Very starcraft-ish look :) Maybe upper verticals could be little bigger but this is only my opinion. You can call it Avro Arcturus , for me it's Gloster Wraith still:)

According to that upper verticals - well I've got some salvaged Su-27 tail wings, but that small from F-16 looks just more exotic there + side view is more intriguing.

Gloster Wraith - hmm... Who knows ;)

Honestly it wasn't such a small part - that Javelin would probably still lie in box and wait for some better time if I hadn't stumbled upon your thread ;)

For some very strange reason that I can not explain, the first thing that comes to mind with your creation is a cuttlefish.  Mind you, I mean this in a good way since the cuttlefish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuttlefish) is a creature that can change colors to help it hide from predators or from prey until it is too late.  Very imaginative model you have created and the paint scheme really makes it stand out in a crowd ;)

Well, you got the point with that cuttlefish, cameo looks somehow similar. Anyway thanks for idea for the story when the model will be ready ;)
At the moment being I have to finish 4 anti frigate rockets, make some wethering and start to scratchbuild stand for it. Some photo update should be around evening.

YES !!!

on so many levels.

Thanks :D

Meanvile I've just have finished scratchbuilding the launchpad.

Here is how the whole idea of this construction was given a birth:
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/Avro%20Arcturus%20heavy%20space%20fighter/30_zps348578a7.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/Avro%20Arcturus%20heavy%20space%20fighter/30_zps348578a7.jpg.html)

^ At the beginning I've used some old, probably made in DDR, blocks and two arms from 'Robomac' + of course some old CD cake. After some time it started to resemble some sort of stationary forklift.

Then a great deal of detailing took place (by the way it has consumed a lot of spare and salvaged parts from other models):
(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/Avro%20Arcturus%20heavy%20space%20fighter/32_zps904c2529.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/Avro%20Arcturus%20heavy%20space%20fighter/32_zps904c2529.jpg.html)

Finally few shots with mounted fighter:

Now I'm waiting only for putty to dry up and than I'll add primer and start painting that contraption  ;)

Last but not least I've also start to scratchbuild missiles. Well I've decided not to made any fins or stabilizers because in space vacuum it doesn't have any use, instead shortly after the frontal part I've put a lot of maneuver engines. it looks strange but might have some sense:

Hi Guys!

First of all sorry for almost a year of absence, just have few things to sort out.
But in the meantime I've finished one of old projects started probably somwhere in 2011 na postponed, well for better times ;) .

In 2011 I've fought about building Sherman tank that appeared in Fallout Tactics:
But after some internet searching on Sherman tank varaints I've got stonger and stronger feeling that that Fallout Tactics modification is, well at least exorbitant waste of technology and equipment. Than I fought that if so many Crypts and at least one military base had survived the nuclear holocaust of 2160 than low priority targets like weaponary museums or even some private collections of military vehicles could survie to the era of Fallouts gameplay. So I've taken HVSS suspesion (from AFV Club), than added M4A1(75) Final hull (with “cast in appliqué”) and a final model of differential cover (both made by Panzerart) and changed old barrel for new one - literraly M1A1 Abrams cannon (RB Model). Then there was a long process of scratchbuilding of parts (back part of turret, some details and etc) just to give him an Israeli super sherman look. About 3 weeks ago airbrushing started and a process of building the diorama.
I've decided to make desert yellow cameo instead of metalic grey with rust, beacuse it looks more realistic especially in army like organization. In theory armour is reinforced with that super-duper compund used to hardening the surface of power armour (and it's covered by desert yellow cameo of course ;) ), propulsion is based on fusion batteries (same tehnology used in Fallout's 2 higwayman). i'd say that time frame of that vehicle is somwhere around Fallout New Vegas and later.

Ok enought of talking, here are some photos:

in future I'm plannig to made a larger diorama for it and adding a Willys based Fast Attack Vehicle (if all works out good some photos of that vehicle will be posted here around sunday)

As for other builds started in this thread - I'm planning to return to that martian variant of HEMMT, but first some paint removal must be done. Secondly I'm planning to finally finish Avro Arcturus but first there is still a lot of painting ahead...

Besides I fought that 120 mm would be more than for enough for any kind of carnivorous fauna or flora encountered in Fallout universe.

Hi guys,

been a while since my last visit here, though it wasn't intended that way...
But in the meantime I've almost finished one of my never ending projects - some mecha from late 80's anime series called 'Blue Meteor SPT Layzner'. Funny thing is that these series is seriously outdated right now:
Quote
The Story takes place in the year 1996, where humanity is advanced enough to develop long-range space travel, as well as bases on both the Moon and Mars. However, the Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union have not ended; rather, they've escalated as both sides build military facilities in space, and the shadow of nuclear conflict looms over humanity, both on and off Earth.
link: http://www.gogoanime.com/category/blue-meteor-spt-layzner (http://www.gogoanime.com/category/blue-meteor-spt-layzner)

Model was made by Bandai and as I heard it is some '4th grade' kit (?), basicly it should looks like that when finished:

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/SPT%20BV-15-H%20Super%20Bravier/Braver_D_layzner_zpsahdl7tby.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/SPT%20BV-15-H%20Super%20Bravier/Braver_D_layzner_zpsahdl7tby.jpg.html)

But after some time spent with that model I've decided to gain bigger insight to the series universe (after all these mecha looks quite mean). That's how whiffed version was born. Except from changing the painting scheme I've added some details to whole body, scratchbuild the backpack (axhausts from some toy motor bike + space shuttle engine jets), shield (Eduard 1:48 Tiger fenders + two Warhammer standard swords) and modified the gun (basicly by adding a large portion of proto X-wing main gun to orginal one).
Here are results:

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l336/Legate_Scimitar/SPT%20BV-15-H%20Super%20Bravier/views_zpsklizuci3.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Legate_Scimitar/media/SPT%20BV-15-H%20Super%20Bravier/views_zpsklizuci3.jpg.html)

That USB cable on one of the photos is just for size refernce. Still haven't done all the chipping that was intended, but the model is almost done.

Very nice. Layzner had the misfortune to come along about the same time as the early Gundam sequels, and never got much
love. The show, as I recall, was fun, and the designs were a bit different from the norm, being about half the size of most of the
Gundam machines, and configured to echo fighter design as much as armor. Almost all featured clear cockpits in the head and
often had some form of wings.

Thank's for comments !

@ Dr. Yokai
As you said it's a big misfortune that this show was somehow subdued by Gundam sequels. First season of Layzner shows quite the potential and got a bit of hard sci-fi tint (as I recall it's not so common feature in mecha anime).
Funny thing is that when the show was originally aired my homeland was still 'on the dark side of force / iron curtain' ;)

Hello everybody :)
It's been a long time since my last post here, but I'm still alive (and hope to start kicking again ;) )
During last absence (almost 1,5 year without few days of sporadically presence) I've completed a few things, or at least finished or started one or two projects...

First of all, I think I've finished dealing with WH40k COIN Aircraft (finally  8) ) - Since last update I've added some markings, some battle damage and chipping (after all, these large propeller also works fine as a grinder for remnants of shot down enemy 'aircrafts' or hmm... 'flayers'? :D )

Next thing is a figure - namely Ghost Rider, that turns out to be a poor quality clone of Knight Models original cast.
I had bought it 2 years ago and since then it was collecting dust on the bench of forgotten projects. At least, not any more:

Base of this model as well as all 'pipes' and other structural elements was scratch build (except the flames - they came unchanged from original base but more 'dynamically' arranged).

Last but not least, I've started to build some vehicle that is heavily influenced by last 'Mad Max' movie 8)
here are few progress shots:

Uff sorry for such a kilometer long post but it's hard to compress more than a year of work ;)
That's it for now, it's pretty possible that some update on last project will be available soon, but can't promiss anything at the moment - let say that I'll need to finish first some commission mentioned in this topic by Artoor_K: http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=7014.0 (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=7014.0)

Love the WH40k COIN Aircraft. What's that word... Badass?
Where did that propeller come from, originally?

Thanks guys ;)

Well that was a lucky shot, I've got a big problem with obtaining anything big enough from any model I can think of and only because in that time I've been slowly moving in to new house I was buying some wall plugs for shelves and I've found some 'decorative' variants of them  ;D
I'm pretty much sure that you're not gonna believe me so as a proof below is photo of second one from pair  8)

@Goonie,

Your Hotrod HMMWV Gun Truck certainly has a rather substantial pedestal mount inside for your roof top mounted gun.

The tires with tracks in an outstanding upgrade for improved traction.  Flat tires are a thing of the past, eh?  :)

Hope you get it finished soon so we can appreciate your finished work.

Well that substantial pedestal was actually a makeshift support for roof, just to put all things together for photo session  ;)
As for tires... Well I just doesn't have the adequate one and didn't want to spend too much time on searching for new so I've just take some toy like tires (rear couple) and all 4 from 1:35 Italerii HMMWV (front couple) and then as a filler used some spare gummy tracks from Tiger tank (and yes I know that I'm gonna fry in that special part of hell dedicated for Tiger violators :D ).

Outstanding choice for the crew too!
