Brits n Space APC
« on: October 13, 2012, 04:35:49 PM »
Made this a few years ago now for a Birt themed 40k force I was toying with. Never really intended to game with any of it, I just like building the models  :icon_fsm:

Anyway it's meant to be a 40k Rhino APC equivalent, I always hated the small size of the GW stuff. Surprisingly 1/35th vehicles are a good fit if you want to actually believe you could get crews inside and 1/48th figs fit in with the GW stuff perfectly. I painted the couple of guardsmen pictured with the apc in a "crimean" british theme ....

What kit donated the bulldozer blade?  That looks much more durable than the actual M113 Bulldozer Blade kit equipment.

Thnx guys,  I do have a few wip pics, not very detailed as I don't have the patience to stop and take pics often, but it does show the major "milestones of the build.

The bulldozer blade is from GW. It comes in some of their tank kits and is also available seperately as part of a tank accessory sprue that you can purchase via mail order ..... the only thing I did to it was to add the hydraulic lines.

I said I'd dig out a few of the old wip pics from this build. Nothing like a fancy SBS but it should give you some idea of the basic steps .....

The start ...... rough mock up of the concept. At this stage it's all a bit "meh" and looks like an M113 with a few 40k bits stuck on it ... because it is just an M113 with 40k bits.

So I added a few extra bits. As you can see there's no fancy building here, it's pretty basic but just enough to break up the outline and creat a bit of interest for the eye. It also gets basic undercoat at this stage. The base red is Humbrol, I use enamels as a primer for coverage. After that everything is brush painted GW acrylics, whcih is the same for all my stuff, from aircraft to tanks, it's all brush painted GW's ....

The stage is sort of like the airbrushing of a pre-shade. It's just some thinned black slopped around the edges of panels etc.

Here the shading is drybrushed with the base red. As you can see almost all of the shade is gone, theres just enough of subtle hint to add with weathering.

The final stage (apart from any decals, fine detail and pigments on the tracks, is the weathering and lightening of the paint. Basically it's drybrushed with the base colour to which successively increasing amounts of a bleach colour is added (whites or yellows usually). I tend to go lighter towards the tops of the sides and top of the vehicle.  Also I add a little streaking to simulate rain washing marks and chipping, which is done with a fine detail brush in grey.

And that's it and I use a similar system for pretty much everything .........

cheers
Brent

That's just amazing, Brent and your weathering really brings the model to life!

I think you and a certain Zod character will get along quite famously.

I hate to tell you this, but you fit right in here!

I expected improvised camouflage of emerald green on red primer, there after all Irish Guards. But of course it is WH40k... But I can't wait to see all of them finished.

Excellent!  :) Is it available as an extra part or did you have to modify the bolter?

Nah I had to make it, it's actually made up from an imperial guard lasgun, see below. The lines show where I made cuts, shifted parts and added others, a sight from a las pistol and a new muzzel from a bit of tubing.

Most interesting. Thanks for the detailed explanation.  :) I was thinking of making a Space Marine Assault Squad I bought on a whim into French Foreign Legion "paratroopers" and thought about giving them bullpup bolters. Lasguns would probably work (and look!) better for that.
Cheers,
Moritz

That's a great alternative to the (somewhat over-priced) GW kit. Also, I'm glad to see someone else still thinks the Guard should use Rhinos. Of course, last time I played 40K, they still could use them! ;D

Now the challenge is to find something that will work as an alternate tank to the standard Leman Russ.
