P-38&82 or 38+82?
« on: January 01, 2017, 02:34:03 PM »
For Christmas and my birthday (2 days later), my brother offered me a UniCraft KhAI-3 (that I plan to build for the Soviet GB at whatif modelers in February) and I told him that - if he accepted to spend more - I would be interested also, from Igor also, by a Novo (ex-Frog) P-82 or/and P-38. Gently, he offered me all! :-*
Now I plan to build the P-82 and P-38, in an inventive way. Instruction sheets are in Russian, but drawings are enough and I learned Russian at school. :)
Either I build them separately (P-82 as TT-tail, single-engined? P-38 as push-pull in the tail?) or I invent a hybrid, or two hybrids from their parts. I have not yet started to imagine this way, could you help me? ???

(P-82 as TT-tail, single-engined?
Like this maybe:

P-38 as push-pull in the tail?
Here are the QZ-38A, B, C parts of my question (but I need help mainly for the other possibility: P-38+82 mix or mixes...)

or I invent a hybrid
This is a hybrid possibility: tandem twin-plane:

This may be my favorite possibility, not twin-boom but crazily pleasant somehow...

I have not yet started to build the model(s) but here is the (Russian) proof I have those 2 Novo kits: ;)

I really like the design with the high wing and pusher-puller engine in the middle.

Brian, your favorite and my favorite could be mixed into a compound triplane (or double sesquiplane):

Here are the P-82 parts, white not like the grey of the Monogram kit (of which I built several):

To explain why I was so long starting this compound P-38/82 model, I should confess I was making another mix model, for the other site (result below). Some of us have run away forever from there, some post the same models on both sites, some like me post half of their models here and half there, but I can show you the result, meaning "now P-38+82"!

The pointy one on top looks like it could've come from the Next Gen Design office of  Dassault, Boeing, Lockheed, et al but with a delightful twist.

Your boundless imagination never ceases to amaze me, mon ami!

"now P-38+82"!
Here we are! The most simple would be something like this:

I was still dissatisfied with the huge P-82 span (at 1/72, while I prefer 1/144 now), so I imagined another way, with truncated wing:

But with the propellers, the width is lmost unchanged, the problem is unchanged for my shelves... I think I will keep the previous way, so much easier.

I have called these possibilities MEL-38D, E, F (MEL is for Mélange meaning Mix in French):

I think the most simple to build is MEL-38D, but I may change for MEL-38F, I am not sure yet.

Tomorrow Saturday, the build will start again. I plan to fix the P-38 pod on the P-82 central plane, with much putty (to sand later). But I still hesitate about the rest. Now I consider removing the P-82 canopies and P-38 tailplane (and tanks) to make a different plane/glider:

This is not so simple. See the picture: the extra wing chord on the P-38 pod (red arrows) had to be cut away.
And cutting better the connection with the central plane, it was possible to improve the rear of the pod (green arrow below before cutting).

Here is the picture of the pod, with putty to fill part of the holes that came removing the plastic... (and I had putty also on the nose, to remove guns into a civilian way: the goal of this design, precisely, is... fantasy).
