Title: FAAMAN's modelling past
Post by: FAAMAN on September 01, 2013, 09:08:17 AM
Not sure if this is the correct place for this, but I thought It'd be fun to show you a snap shot of my modelling past and describe a couple of deliberate Whiffs I'd done at the time. :)

Sooo ............

In the dim dark past when I was 16.  :o

On Saturday 28Apr1979 a reporter from a Sydney local newspaper the, Parramatta Advertiser interviewed me about my hobbying after seeing my model collection when he came to interview my Grandfather a week before over his witnessing the demise of the "Red Baron" during his WW1 service.
These are the posed pics taken in my room (there's 4 of them total) I was sent before the newspaper article was published. The published article and an ad from the Advertiser dated Wed.16May1979. If you follow the link to my Photobucket you'll get to see the article too.

In the first pic there's three Whiffs out behind the Dornier 217J-1 nightfighter and the SAAB Viggen, I know they're a bit difficult to see but they are there;

First is an Airfix 1/72 Bristol Freighter done up as an RNZAF beastie, I'd just seen one previous to me building this model (a 'short' nose model at RAAF Richmond) and thought the Kiwis would like the expanded abilities that the long nose presented them, copped some flak over this one as I presented it at a modelling show at my school and sure enough along came a 'rivet counter'.  >:D So I've never shown nor admitted Whiffery since then as the 'bean counter' couldn't see the 'fun' in creating something a little bit out of left field and plausible, he really made something out of it and it all got rather embarrassing.  :-[  :-[  :-[   >:(

Next behind the Dornier is a Revell 1/72 sale F-111A Ardvark modded into a long range fighter with an Aifix F-4s' IR sensor under the nose, a pair of AIM-7 Sparrows (Revell F-4E) on wing glove pylons (scratch built) and an M-61 in a gondola in the weapons bay (ala F-106 update), got the idea after reading about the navy F-111B and I had the damaged RAAF F-111C in the to be decided box, so, in a quick couple of hours I had committed Whiffery. Painted in the 'standard' camo for 111's with decals from the spares box.  8)

And lastly, breaking hard to starboard behind the Dornier is an Airfix 1/72 scale Westland Whirlwind MkI (first tool) saved from scrapping as a Sea Whirlwind NF.MkII with slipper tanks, one with a radar in it also, folding wings and a stinger type arrestor hook painted for the Pacific Theater in Glossy dark blue upper surfaces, matt black under surfaces but to avoid being shot down by another nightfighter thinking it a twin engined sneaky son of Nippon pulling a night attack I painted the underside of the port outer wing and horizontal stabilizer gloss white as a recognition feature. Finished off with British Pacific theater roundels etc. This model can also be seen in the second pic top right corner.

Yes there is a lot of models hanging up, all up at this point there's about 150 aircraft models, 60 or so ships, some armor and 'normal' road vehicles. Approx 50% of what's in the pics survive intact, a lot are in the " .... to be repaired ...." boxes and some no longer exist at all.

I hope you enjoy this look into my hobby past, as you can see even at this early age the Whiff creature was alive and well.  8) ;)

If you'd like to see more of my surviving models I'll just post in this thread if possible? GTX?

Thanks for lookin' ladies and gents  :)

Thanks for the comments Rick and Tophe, don't dis the hair!! :D

Glad you remember that Wombat, I've even still got the posters. :D

Correct old son I could've been doing that, but that fella at school really put me back in my box. I've never shown another Whiff since, but I sense a change of climate coming :D

Maybe I should repair the Bristol Freighter sooner than planned, it's the only one of the above described Whiffs I've still got intact, the others had the "giant foot of doom" (not mine) turn them into spares :(

Any how, glad you like the pics :D 8)

Wow FAAMAN, your ceiling looks a lot like mine, although I've got to admit, your room is a lot cleaner!

Incredible to think that you've been enjoying this hobby for so long.

Many thanks for taking us for a trip in your "way back" machine.

Well GTX and 'others' would like to see more of the 'past' models, sooooo ....... lets dial up that Wayback machine  :o

Focke Wulf Fw 190D Airfix 1/72scale 10121-0 red stripe built 1969 and my oldest surviving model, rebuilt several times.

I 'spose this is really an out of the box Whiff as Airfix clearly got it wrong when this kit was released in 1956, nose too short, prop blades too narrow, fuse too deep aft, odd bulges on the top of the wing that don't represent ANY 190, as well as Fuse codes/markings that actually don't equate either. The Stammkennzeichen (factory radio call sign TD+X1) actually doesn't exist. I don't even think they knew which 'D' they were modelling as it's sorta a D-9 and a D-13, I've an Airfix Magazine article which not only shows you how to fix ALL the faults but it claims it's a Fw 190D-13!

Any how mines gone through a couple of repair/rebuild cycles (mostly badly), it was even placed on a dio base as a crash landed bird with a riddled wing etc, you see it now after a rebuild in 1977 or 1978 (!?) using an extra canopy from a Matchbox Fw 190 kit I'd built, a freelance camo and spare decals from the same Matchbox Fw kit as the canopy. Looks pretty ordinary now but back then I was impressed!  ;D

Dornier Do217J-1 Airfix 1/72scale 01231-5 built August 1979

Built OOB, just a relatively quick and easy construct, and I've another in the stash to do.  ;)

Skywave PitRoad kit No. 19/SW300 finished building 08Jan82, 1/700scale B-29 bombers & F-13A PhotoFortress, there's a heap more to be built (a bomb wing plus attached photo unit) !!! This could take years !!! (maniacal laughter fades .......  ::))

The three B-29's are fitted with tail guns and the extra pair of .50's in the forward top turret scratch built early style AN/APQ-13 ground mapping radar domes, the F-13A has camera windows. Their markings are a mixture of hand painted (you couldn't tell ??) & from the decal sheet in the kit, the subjects researched from "B-29 Superfortress in Action" - Squadron Signal #31, "Superfortress" by Steve Birdsall (Squadron Signal Special) & "B-29 Superfortress at War" by David A. Anderton. Still lots more research to do as I've learnt lots since '82 !! I didn't attempt any nose art as I couldn't trust I wouldn't make some HUGE brush error, although now, with my printer and decal paper ......... Hmmmmmmmm .......

An idea of their size can be seen from the 10mm grid on my cutting board!

So, how exactly will you fit nose-weights in those teeny-weeny B-29's to stop 'em being tail-sitters? ???

Like the Dornier, very good job on that one. :D

Hmm! I think the FW-190D-? could do with a strip-back, a bit of PSR & a new paint job, though. ;)

Thanks Wombat, the next B-29s have a cut off nail in front of the wings between the top and bottom of the fuse halves to stop the tail sitting. The first 4 have plasticene stuffed into their noses, guess it wasn't enough weight.  :-[

No, the Fw is now 'frozen', no work other than upkeep, as a reminder of where my modelling's been. :)

I'm glad you like the Dornier, not bad for a two day build, back then that is :D

More from the vault .........

From the same set the B-29s above came from, (19-SW300) are these 4 Mitsubishi J2M Raiden (Jack) land based Naval Fighters and 4 Nakajima J1N Gekko (Irving) heavy/night fighters. All finished on 08Jan1982, the Jacks were built out-of-the-box with generic numbering and national markings, the Irvings were detailed with Luftwaffe-style nightfighter radar aerials (modellers liscence at the time) and a fin stripe with generic numbers and national markings.

Mitsubishi J2M Raiden - Jacks, pretty small beasties really,

More 1/700 scale from Skywave PitRoad, this time set 10-SW300 with 4x B-17G and 2x PBY Catalina.
The x4 B-17s were finished in the markings supplied in the kit for aircraft of the US 8th Air Force's 1st bomb Division; 303rd Bomb Group 358th Squadron. Modified to suit the model represented with extra guns added (all) or turrets deleted E & F model.

Dragon 1/144 scale Sukhoi Su-27M Naval Flanker Blue-30 part of the Tblisi Air Wing, kit DML4542. Built during most of 1994, a very difficult build, hence the loong build time. Built almost straight out of the box, with scratch built data probes and wing-fold hinge fairings. Not very happy with the kit overall, the model is distinctly underscale and not quite the right shape in places, still looks ok though.

And I thought working in 1/144 was challenging...

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm glad you're liking a walk down my past efforts, both good and bad  ;)

NEXT .........

Grumman (GM) FM-2 Wildcat 00/MF USN 1/72 Airfix kit # ? built 10Nov80. I found pics of the correct markings and aerials for this training squadron as Airfix missed the codes on the top of the starboard wing. Learning weathering and wrongly added 5th & 6th machine guns, Oh well ......  :-[

Some more .......

Lockheed F-104G Starfighter 1/144 scale Crown kit# J7
Built as Luftwaffe machine 22+66 09May1984. It took a looong time to complete as it was a very difficult kit to get a good result from although I'm still reasonably happy with the result all these years later. The Testors Dullcote varnish is browning off in patches now, a bit disappointing.  >:(

Republic F-105D Thundercheif  1/144 scale Otaki kit# OT2-20,
Built as US Air Force machine AF24328/ZA, finished 01May83. I did as much to enhance this kit as possible with the minimum of work involved. (Laziness??). Great little kit from an excellent series, fun to do. I've got a few more now along with the resin detail sets from Retrokit, thinking of a RAAF version, maybe in greys .........  8)

Some more 1/700 scale aircraft,

Lockheed C-5A Galaxy 1-700scale PitRoad kit S-1/SW-1000
Both finished OOB 11May1991 as C-5A's 454/00454 & 456/00456. Excellent kits, just very small and hard to finish convincingly, the landing gear being the hardest not to make a mess of. Still haven't finished the 4x M-1 Abrams or the 4x M-3 Bradley AFVs that go with these planes. And now I have several more of these to do, some in original finish as this posted pair, some in lizard scheme and some greys ......... along with the armor that comes with the kit  :-\, can't always model in your comfort zone.  :o

Hey all, been a while but here's another installment in my modelling past,

I noticed in the "Meng" thread the comments made on the new F-102 from Meng and that some were wishing for a new F-106 also, being I've built both the Hasegawa kits I thought you'd like to see 'em  ;)

Hasegawa 1/72 scale kit C2/JS-047. 8-) 8-)
Finished 00B 30Aug1981 as a USAF F-102A Delta Dagger AF070884 of the 62nd FIS in South East Asia camo for something different to the plain ADC Grey finish. A very good kit that resulted in a very enjoyable build for me and IMHO a great result. The paint left some lite brush marks and the weathering came out well. Only problem now is Hasegawa decal "yellowing".  :(

Hasegawa 1/72 scale kit C3/JS-054.
Finished 13Dec1981 as a USAF ADC F-106A "Updated" Delta Dart, "Bones Crusher"-90094 of the 87th FIS post 1972. A very good kit that resulted in a very enjoyable build and IMHO one of the best models I've ever built. To make an updated "Six" I had to fit a vulcan cannon in a gondola in the weapons bay, a frame less canopy, data-link aerials, anti-col light and intake as well as detailing the cockpit and pilot. The weathering went well and I like how it came out. :blob: The only problem now is the very noticeable "yellowing" and lightening of the Hasegawa decals, very annoying. This has high-lighted where I mixed my own colour match for the red on the tail and painted in the missing red areas around the tail  :( :(

Thanks for sharing that Neil, it all looks and sounds hauntingly familiar to me including the early rivet counter encounter - I didn't manage to get a newspaper article on me though !!  The ceiling, the odd "whiffery", RNZAF SuperFreighters  ( mine was RAAF .. yeah I know..)  anyhow.. all good !   :)

Thanks Unc!!  8) More of my past to come, and then, I'll be committing Whiffery  :o :o Sounds vaguely rude don't it?  ??? 8)

It's been a while, so I thought I'd better post some more,

From 1980;
Messerschmitt Me 410 Lindberg 1-72 kit No 473 (on the box and instructions).
Finished almost OOB 25Nov1980 as F6+WK/D18. Your typically awful Lindberg kit that needed lots of work to make look decent, carved the two gun ports either side of the nose, the transparencies were terrible with the canopy worst with a glue joint right down the center so I elected to paint in the clear panels to disguise the glued joint. The colour scheme is freelance as the paint scheme on the box top was not able to be verified at the time due to a lack of reference material, so I used "modellers license" to finish it as a sorta night fighter. The decals are incomplete as Lindberg didn't produce the "F6" part of the aircraft codes so I had to do it by hand as well as the "D18" on the tail (the swastika was also not part of the decals and I didn't have one spare). Didn't come out too bad really.
Apologies for the pics being a bit dark, still learning :o :o

McDonnell F-4E Phantom II LS kit no. J9/A117:100, all 4 finished 05Jan1981 in USAF SEA scheme. Exactly the same kit as J8 the F-4EJ except for the decals. I wish that LS had released its weapon sets before I built them, it would've been nice to be able to put a more believable weapons loads on the 6 initial builds than just the 2 AIM-7Fs supplied in the kit fitted on the wing pylons.
This is all seven 1/144 scale Phantoms I've built so far, five 'Es' and two 'EJs', the grey 'E' was built 20Apr1987 and is a Whiff.

Me-410, one of those not well known planes unless you are "in to it" as we BTSers are.
Me or someone in circle of friends built that Lindberg kit back in the day.
Sharp build.  I like it. :)

Very sharp Me-410.  Yeah, the cement line down the middle of the transparency seems to be a Lindberg trademark, their Ar-234B has it, too.

Thanks for the kind words gents. :) :)

I've a 'few' (well, 15 maybe ::)) more 1/144 F-4s to do including two of the fantastic Platz F-4J kits!!! 8)

Sorry Wombat nothing new for two years, just not able to finish anything, damaged mojo (and health) maybe plus 'advanced modeller's syndrome', you know afraid of posting a crappy new build :icon_crap: :icon_crap: There's still some more aircraft from the vaults that survive I'll post.
I just may really embarrass myself and start threads to post my ship and armor model survivors from over the years, not sure yet :-\ (Sounds like a threat don't it??)
Anyhow, a few more form the past,

MDD F-4D Phantom II 1/72 scale Airfix kit 04013-8.
Built OOB as F-4D USAF-67466 during 1978, a long build, and my second Airfix F-4 (the first was destroyed in 1984). It's an OK kit but it's missing some of the details belonging to the different F-4 versions the kit can be made into. Mucked up by fitting those silly long rocket pod/tanks instead of drop tanks. Painted with Airfix enamels (miss 'em) but unfortunately the Matt varnish went "white" in some places. The model is still dirty from hanging from my rooms' ceiling over 25 years ago!

GD F-16A Falcon 1-72 Revell kit H-222-3800-A.
Finished 19Dec1979 as USAF F-16A AF07516. A very nice kit to build, but I got the colours wrong. I didn't have the correct grey/s in the instructions. The colours were the closest to the "Robin's Egg blue" scheme that was used on early USAF F-15As and being a "dogfighter" I thought I'd give the blue a go. Not sure what the scheme was actually called nor the real FS. numbers/colours. One of the few model aircraft I've ever built deliberately with wheels up. I still haven't done the tow tractor, engine trolley & PW-100 turbo fan. :-[ So I guess the camo scheme makes it an unintentional Whiff ::)
IMHO it doesn't look too bad I 'spose. (for a 34 year old :o )

Some Matchbox builds, :)

NA P-51D Mustang 7F-V 1/72 Matchbox PK-13.
Built OOB Sept1975 as USAAC 7F-V/472354. Initially came out ok, then it was nearly destroyed by being trodden on. I decided to try a rebuild to see if I could finish it in a decent state, finished 17Aug1980. Still ok but not great.

Matchbox 1/72 scale N.A. P-51K Mustang kit no. PK-013.
Built 14Dec1979 as the RAF 'K' version QV-V/KM272 straight from the box. I'm not really happy with the black codes & serials as they are very transparent and lack depth of colour.

Grumman EA-6B Prowler Matchbox 1/72 PK-410.
Built 10Dec1982 as US Navy aircraft 613/AJ/158543 one of the three marking options in the kit. Really needed more work than I did but being pushed for time I only added a few bits of Slater's plastic strip to the ECM pods for detail. Model was damaged in a fall 1990 and repaired as best as possible.

Fairchild A-10A Thunderbolt II 1_72 Matchbox PK-12.
Built OOB 18Dec1979 as the prototype aircraft Sn. 11369. The only extra bit I added was a small gunsight. Not a bad kit with nice decals, a pity that the decals are slightly yellowing now under the varnish.

As I am a WW1 addicted, I got very curious about your Grandfather witnessing the demise of the "Red Baron" during his WW1 service... is it possible to have a look to the interview?

Andonio64 the printed interview is at my elderly Mum's home very carefully preserved and I am unable to access it. I know the whole of the story though, listening to my Grandfather and all his mates at the pub after ANZAC day marches relating all sorts stories of incidents, both on leave and in combat during WW1.

A few more 'Navy' birds . . . . . .  :P

Fairey Firefly T2 916/RAN-VX373 Airfix kit #902018 built 24Mar84 after 2 days (you can tell?) as a conversion to the Airfix MkV kit to an RAN  T2 trainer for display at the original RAN Fleet Air Arm Museum Nowra NSW where it spent many years on display before being returned to me when I left the Navy after 10years (Sep 1991). The conversion didn't really work out as the spine modification behind the second cockpit sagged back and due to time constraints (a VERY pushy Cheif Petty Officer) was not able to be fixed/repositioned correctly so the model was completed as "best" representation possible.

Curtiss F-11C-2 Goshawk 1/72 Monogram kit 6796. Built OOB 05Sep1980. A long build for some reason of a really nice kit that I wasn't brave enough to add rigging wires to, nice model IMHO. Unfortunately the decals have yellowed slightly under the Testors Glosscoat varnish over the years.

Supermarine Attacker F.Mk.1 Novo/Frog 1/72 kit F330. Built through July1980, Royal Navy aircraft 101/J/WA496 from 800Squadron HMS Eagle 1951. A very basic kit with a "flying head" in a featureless cockpit and no wheel wells. So I decided to at least give it a proper pilot and seat but leave the wheel wells alone. You may notice the pilot figure is an Airfix one. The decals in the kit were printed slightly off register but as I couldn't find any replacements I used the kit items. Not happy with the finish now as the the Humbrol gloss varnish has "browned" over the years giving the model a yellowish tinge.

More additions . . . . .  8)

The only intact helos in my collection,

Aerospatiale SA.342 Gazelle Airfix 1/72 scale kit 61059-7 built 17May1981 OOB as XW844 of the British Army. Went together OK until I accidentally melted one blade :o whilst drying the spraycan matt Testors varnish (oddly the main rotor turns very freely with no out-of-balance), a VERY tail heavy model hence the "support".
Then I noticed the glue blooms inside the transparencies after finishing  :o Still not bad for a 35 year old I 'spose 8)

MBB Bo 105C Tiger Airfix 1/72 scale kit 61068-1 built OOB 02Jun1981 as 82+96/no.671 of the German Heersfleiger. Good fun build, most mistakes on it are my own hairy stick/paint techniques, still looks good IMHO. Both the rotors are very resistant to damage from miss handling & even spin freely which really impressed meself back then !!  ;)

Bell AH-1S TOW Cobra Fujimi 1/72 scale kit 7A22/22 built 08Jun1981 OOB as USAAC sno. 15019. Couldn't get the correct US Army colour so I used what I had. Lots of filling and sanding around the canopies, noticed that there's "silvering" under the decals (despite gloss varnish before decals & matt varnish after the decals were dry ) that wasn't there a few years back.  :o

After dealing with PhotoRansom's treachery (only took 27days) I thought I'd add a couple more from the "past" ::)

Grumman F9F-2 Panther 1-72 Hasegawa kit D11/D011:500.
Finished 15Dec1981 OOB as a US Navy F9F-2 Panther 307/D/123534 of VF123 during the Korean War.
Avery good kit, far better than the Matchbox kit in the same scale, just a very rewarding build to produce one of the best models I've ever done IMHO.  8) 8) The only prob being that the Hasegawa decals are "yellowing" slightly now, a very common fault with their decals :-[ :-[

Grumman F9F-8 Cougar 1-72 Hasegawa kit D12.
Hasegawa kit D12/D012:500. Finished OOB 16Oct1982 as a US Navy F9F-8 Cougar 103/D/141036 of VF81 approx 1960. An excellent kit that helped me produce one of the best models I've ever built. A very rewarding and fun build. Only problem now is that the Hasegawa decals are "yellowing" slightly now. :-[ :-[

And finally, the last winged thing I can show,

Here's one I didn't know I had  :o :o Certainly not a new build and I did say I'd post 'warts and all'  :icon_surprised:

Airfix 1/72 scale Angel Interceptor A_737 kit No. 02026-8 a rebox released from 1973.

Just a note, the Airfix model is UNDERSCALE for 1/72scale. It is based on one of the original studio models that were made in 1/87th, that's European/American model train HO 3.5mm=1ft scale.

A HUGE blast from the past found by my 13 year old son in box of broken models totally covered in dust with a spider living in the cockpit!!!  8) 8) He thought it was odd that it appeared to be intact in a box full of ". . . to be repaired" models and it reminded him of a plane "in one of those old TV shows you watch".  :o

So I went to my model box/build scrap books and found it.  :))
Built OOB when I was 12 years old in 1974, my second Angel as the first one was a play loss :D . Just starting to develop my painting skills at the time, the model was painted with Airfix's own paints, G1 Post Office Red, G3 White, G8 Silver, M6 Black with the pilot painted (badly) M12 Crimson, no varnishes were used. I'd read in a kid's mag around this time that the model builder's for the show had hi-lighted the panel lines, so I tried to do this on mine with pencil, but with not a lot of success.
The Airfix gloss white has yellowed somewhat and so have the decals.
I've scrubbed the model thoroughly to remove dirt, repaired some of the markings with a fine tip marker and removed the canopy carefully to evict what was left of the spider and its' home and polish the canopy, the build and paintwork is exactly as I finished it 41 years ago. So please be gentle I was only 12  :o ::)

Love fine builds of Panther & Cougar. :-*
Time trip to 50s and another to 60s.  Darker gray on inner under wing of Cougar is great touch.

How many years ago, bucko? ???

You're 55 in a couple of months, mate! (I know, I'm already there! :o )

I could be wrong but I seem to have a vague (Everything's bloody vague, these days! ::) ) memory of you building the Panther & the Cougar.

Nice work on both of them!

Yep you're correct Wombatus, 43 years ago I finished the Angel :-[
And yes you were most definitely about for the Panther and Cougar build ;)
Might do ships and vehicles next :-\ :-\
