Imperial QIE Fighter
« on: November 21, 2020, 03:35:56 AM »
Ahh well it happened, after finishing the T-wing, I had the seed of a second project to build something to chase it but no inspiration. And then a cheap watch I ordered arrived it was in a display box the core of which looked TIE Fighterish  and the QUI fighter was borne.

Sorry no initial photos but here's the story so far

The yellow bit is the carrier the watch came on, the body is some textured polystyrene plastic that was packaging for blue cheese, the energy cannon are pen refills and the quad ion engines are caps from tubes of anti-flea spot-ons.

The gubbins on top is an interesting part that i found in the box o' bits.

I am still trying different designs for the cockpit the first experiment is shown.

Its not going to be as stunning as the T-Wing  but its certainly going to be weirder!

Hi all

More progress, I've decided to change the cockpit design as you can see from above it was going to be a bath type of design with a clear nose made from some interesting bubble packaging and the rest made up from clear acetate.

However as this is being constructed for someone else I figured I needed something a bit more robust the result of which is this...

by Robomog, on Flickr

I found a  couple of clear canopies that looked pretty good then went off on a hunt to find something to sit the pilot in.

This was harder than you think !  eventually I found the end of a large scale comformal fuel tank was pretty close and with a bit of persuasion by heating and bending and some side extensions it was made to be a good fit

A plasticard bulkhead was added and some sprue extensions ready for joining to the main fuselage

by Robomog, on Flickr

The canopy and pilot are only placed in position at the moment, I need to detail the cockpit before fixing.

While that was drying i have completed the engine pack, it will be installed when the model has been sprayed.

Hi all

Small update,  finished detailing the cockpit,  its not as sophisticated  as the T-Wing as this is a pure fighter and not a multi role craft.

Next job is to attach the cockpit to the main body and fair it in.

Thanks for looking ..........

Thanks for the comment chaps, on a roll with this one

The cockpit has been attached to the main body..........

by Robomog, on Flickr

And the two faired in.......

by Robomog, on Flickr

But I have now created myself a conundrum,  do i position the cannons as above,

or like this.........

by Robomog, on Flickr

B-25 gun pack style,.

i like both configurations for differing reasons but i am constantly yo-yoing between the two. I still have a bit of time as it is nearly ready for the spray booth and decals so if any body has a preference let me know.

Personally I prefer this latter configuration, it gives in my opinion a better line to the whole thing.

Thanks guys, plan B it is, I agree with the consensus it looks a lot more compact and rakish with the guns on the body.

The model has had its primer coat which has thrown up some rough areas that need treating, still working out a colour scheme and decals.

Thanks again for the feed back, more soon

I love it, but the rounded shape of the watch packaging reminds me more of the fuselage sides of the Tydirium class shuttle.  I can see it with a massive fin and two wings like the Tyderium as a single seater gunship from the same shipyard.  Cant wait to see how this one progresses!!

Thanks for the kind comments guys

Aeroplanedriver:  yea  see what you mean about the fuselage but no big wings here, what you see is pretty much the final design

Apophenia: thanks for identifying the canopy, it came with a bunch of spare parts I bought on evilbay and I wasn't sure of its origin  ;D but it scale-o-ramad quite nicely into this project in 1/72 scale to match the T-Wing

Painting and decal design has commenced  more photos soon

Just a quick sneaky peek.

Looking good, I like this.

A case of the pen refill being mightier than the energy cannon ?
Were going to be finished in 2020 BEFORE I start any da*!#d new ones - Maybe When Hell Freezes Over - again? - CF-IDS Wolverine; Douglas Mawson; Bubba Wants a Fishin' Rig; NA F-100

Against the Wall - Maton Dreadnought; Fender Telecaster; Epiphone Les Paul Stud
