Started work on the Delta 2 Macchi Castoldi MC 72 seaplane. It's the only kit of the airplane that I know of, and while having the flaws of some early short run kits, its not bad.

I was just going to paint the pilot and slip him into the cockpit, but...
..the siren call of detailing could not be denied.

Fairly simple kit, so progress has been good.

Good luck beating the Delta kit into shape.
There is the very old Artiplast in 1/48-1/50, opinions differ on scale,
which is equally rough. Nice re$in kits have been done.
-
My copy of PAK-20 says the Artiplast kit is 1/50 and re-boxed by Smer. A company called Atelier Noix does/did one in 1/48 (and the following company Noix to), another company called Challenge does/did one in 1/24 and 1/72, Czechmasters, Delta does one in 1/72, a company called Essdale did one in 1/32, then yet another company called Vintage did it in both 1/48 and 1/72 which were both re-boxed by MisterKit.
-
I know the Delta kit is good and I have my doubts about the Artiplast/SMER kit (based on experience with other Artiplast kits). I have no idea about the others listed.
-
Marsh Models (best known for 1/43rd cars) did a very limited release of the MC72 under their Aerotech
label. Hard to find.
The Japanese firm Atelier Noix is, unfortunately, long gone. :(
The Artiplast is rough, although, not all Artiplast are.
-
I'm going to enjoy this one, Doc. I've always had a soft-spot for MC Schneider Cup contenders.
You have an enviable and commendable knack for finding such a unique kit.
Very much looking forward to seeing your take on this beautifully streamlined aircraft!

Having moved a little further with the major construction, I can see where it gets its reputation. I can say the tool maker/designer was well intentioned, anyhow... ;)
Already shot myself in the foot once so far - I should have used much thinner strut
material for the sidewalls. :-[ Still, its moving along tolerably well. Thanks for the
information and encouragement! More pics in a day or two.

Well, it's no slammer, but it hasn't been too taxing so far. The lower rear fuselage is going to loose some detail, but I think it'll come out looking pretty fair.
It did have some serious gaps...

But a little pushing, shoving and ( gentle ) bending, and it came together
with good alignment. I had to carve out the mounting hole for the props - It's
supposed to be trapped by the fuselage halves, but I was nervous about it
not sitting right.

Thanks for looking, paint next weekend I hope.

Ahh what memories of beating the old Pegasus kits into shape
Go you good thing !
-
I got a cold chill down my spine seeing those floats again.
Turns out I built one of these about 25 years ago. Thought it was the worst fitting thing I'd come across since my last tux rental.
I'm cringing remembering all the gaps I still had in the end.
Doc, I'm not sure of much, but I'd bet the farm yours comes out light-years better than mine did!

Well its coming along - hit it with one gloss yellow primer last weekend, saw it had
bubbled a bit in spots, ground it down with sanding sticks and steel wool and gave it another coat on Sunday, and gloss black for the float radiators and props.THis kit is an odd mix of almost-too-subtle radiator detail on the wings, and trenchs that
would have amazed Matchbox. Still, I think it'll turn out ok.... ??? Funny you should mention Pegasus - the only kit I've truly given up on in recent memori was the XF-5U Flapjack I tried to finish in FAA livery awhile back...Anyway, thanks for the encouraging words and votes of confidence! Here's the latest:

Well done!
-
Wow Doc that's one of the best yellow finishes I've seen in a while!
Yellow challenges me like no other color for some reason.
Going with gloss black for the radiators & props seems the perfect compliment!
And not just because I've got a thing for the old Black 'n Gold (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Steelers)...
Brian da Basher
-
Thanks Tophe!
Brian, I hope you won't be too disappointed - the gloss is the base coat for some alclad. I'll probably keep the yellow for the wings, but the float radiators will be getting alclad burnt metal, as will the radiator surface on the rear hull. I rarely do things so close to the book, so to speak, but I want to get fairly close to the original paint scheme. I even broke down and bought some Tamiya masking tape for the job...
-
I'm never disappointed by your marvels, Doc!
Tamiya kabuki tape is the best I've ever used and wonder how I got along without it.
One thing though, in my experience it loves to pull up metallic paints. This could be due to issues with my base coats which I am notoriously less than thorough with.
Looking forward to more,
Brian da Basher

Great work here, as you showed the delta kits are not that masters of precision!
I have the Artiplast kit in 48th... another frightening low quality model.
But I love this plane, it was the 1st kit I ever made when I was 9 or 10 yrs old (it was the Artiplast one, that's why I have bought it again at the age of 53)...
I look forward to admiring your finished kit!

Just about there. A couple of snaps of the final paints

I made the mistake of picking it up and sent the radiator inserts on the
left float flying...I have recovered two of the three so far, and the other one is
down there somewhere...
-
Dear God! Fingers crossed that the escapee radiator has not yet passed the event horizon of the super black hole that lurks under the desk of all modellers. :o
PS. What's with all the weird formatting that's taken over the site... or is it just my computer?
-
Red x's all over the place? I thought it was my ancient system...
-
Greg had to get Go-Daddy to update the PHP on the server so we could upgrade the forum to the latest version. The fracked up code adding started afterwards. Trying to find a fix.
-
Already looking much better so hopefully all fixed. :))
-
My that's a fantastic update, Doc!
Love the red and those radiators look like the real deal!

It's done - more pics in the 'completed' thread. Had some last minute terrors, even after recovering the missing radiator piece. Managed to knock the floats off twice, and got too relaxed with the decals. In spite of their being a good 20 years old, they
were in fine shape, and the left hand fin flash went down perfectly...but I hit the right side rudder decal with Micro-sol a little too soon and it kinda crumpled a bit in
place. The float radiators needed to be honed down a little more, but I had already done the painting, so... :-[
Considering it's the first time I've built anything box stock from the git-go in ages, it didn't come out too bad.

And let's just...not talk about the windscreen, ok?

Nice job on a tricky looking kit.
-
Yipee, Nice one Craig.. came out really well
-
Thanks, fellas - much appreciated.
-
Beautiful!! I think I've got that kit put back somewhere (not even sure if local or remote stash) but this will be an inspiration when I do it.
-
:smiley:Very nice Craig. :icon_fsm:

Thanks, both of you!
Jon - yes, caught that yesterday afternoon. It's beautiful work - but after building this one, I'm just about ready to start switching up to 1/48th...
-
but after building this one, I'm just about ready to start switching up to 1/48th...
You're dead to me...
Seriously though - it came out great, especially considering the quality (or lack thereof) of the kit.
-
... I'm just about ready to start switching up to 1/48th...
Going to bash the old Artiplast/Smer MC-72 into submission? ;D :icon_vader:
-
I'm just about ready to start switching up to 1/48th...
Yes, come to the dark side.... :icon_vader:

I've never considered my shift to 1/48 to be going dark, more of an enlightenment, really. :icon_meditation:
-
That's an astonishing result from such a rough kit, Doc!
Unbelievable how polished it all looks.
No worries on the windscreen. When I built mine, the gaps weren't noticeable because of the trenches around the radiators.
Pure eye-candy all the way!

Spoken like a true believer. ;)
-
That turned out great.
-
Just joined the forum and catching up on things, but I wanted to jump in and say what a great job you did on this kit. I've been humming and hawing about this one for a while now, so it's nice to see it "in action".
Simply great.
