PayPal informed me that my card was expired and I had to enter the new one. Then I discovered I had money there, from a cancelled order of cloth some time ago. What to do with that? Ordering a model kit of course...
I ordered yesterday Hasegawa's P-38 Egg Plane, just 2 copies were still available... (sigh of relief):
-
The Kit should arrive home 20-23 March (2017, I hope...), but in the meantime I may dream of how I will build it, or butcher it (PEG-38A,B,C):
-
or PEG-38D,E,F:
-
or P-38G, H, I (maybe the version code i didn't exist in USAAF, but I want to keep J for a jet version, next):
-
but I want to keep J for a jet version, next
So here are the PEG-38J, K, L. That makes a total of 12 versions (up to now), which one to build? ??? ;)
-
it is a nice kit ! I did a floatplane version (of course ;) ) some time ago
have fun!
-
Thanks!
I remember your one, Ericr, that was so marvelous... but Hasegawa did not produce it anymore. Just in 2016 it seems it has been produced again, I needed to join your club of Lucky ones...
At last, my favorite layout may be the jet helicopter compound PEG-38M below:
-
The PEG-38N would be a different helicopter, less fast & less crazy:
-
To complete the set of 3, I have added the PEG-38P, with booms cut in the middle...
-
More "logical" are the PEG-38Q and R (below), but this is less funy... I think I will build the PEG-38M helicopter.
-
PEG-38 ''D''efinitely my favorite. :D
-
The canard one? Interesting opinion, thanks, I will see when I receive the kit and see the parts. If not too much PSR work, this could be.
-
Still about 10 days for the kit to arrive...
In the meantime, I keep on dreaming : here are the PEG-38S & T
-
The PEG-38Z must be a Zwilling double-plane (and I could have bought the 2 available copies of P-38 eggplane, even if I haven't)... PEG-38Y and X could be similar and different, but I will need to fill the gap (what will be the PEG-38 U, V, W???)
-
but I will need to fill the gap (what will be the PEG-38 U, V, W???)
At last, I have found them in the archives:
-
In the end you decided what you will do Cristophe?

If the parts make it possible easily, the canard D may be my choice. Otherwise my favourite may be the helicopter-jet M. ;)
-
I received the kit today, 3-6 days sooner than announced...
-
For the canard D version, I would have to saw away following the red lines below, then hope the contact is all right with the rest without too much PSR... I fear this is too much work for me...
-
On the opposite: for the M jet version, the amount of work is much more than I hoped, as a plain area between boom and propeller has to be cut/removed (see the red arrows, on the parts hold by adhesive tape):
-
As well, it will be very difficult to remove the cooling devices on the booms (orange arrow below): there are not extra parts to glue or not, but this has to be cut off from the main parts, leaving a very fragile part to hold the tail (+ lots of putty-sanding-repeat)...
-
As the very easy M (crazy) project seems impossible to do, this will be a matter of hard work, and I must find deep courage...
Thus I could accept difficulty of the D way also, up to a D-M mix: PEG-38AA, an egg-Lightning simply "canard" + "jet" + "helicopter", not normal all right ;)
-
To simplify: no need to truncate the tailplane into 3 parts: a plain foreplane, very low, would be even better for the USAAF (wanting the P-38 nose to send kisses forward or something)... ???
-
The plastic is hard to cut, the blade is straight and dangerous... it is not easy to transform a piston engine into a jet, even for a plastic modeller ;)
-
great idea !
go slowly but safely ;)
-
Thanks.
Well, it could be almost finished (with just the coolings to remove/fill), depending if I will make it canard or not...
-
:D is sooo cute
-
Agreed ;)
-
:D is sooo cute
I completely concur on the cuteness!
Great work, mon ami! What a delight!

-
Thanks!
In fact, it is not finished: I started cutting off the coolings on the booms (no need for jets), but the cutter cut my finger and the blood flew (a little)... I will continue later, after slow repair of my finger...
-
Here is the battlefield, one day after... ???
-
Now that you've made a blood sacrifice to the gods of modeling, all will be well, mon ami!
Thank you for keeping us updated on this delightful project!
Brian da Basher
-
Thanks.
Cicatrization and starting again happened rather well:
-
Cutting off the coolings is finshed, and putty addition has started:
-
Uuuuhh surgery :-\
Lovely!
-
Sanding the booms is now done.
Remains:
- truncating the low part of the fins (not to be burnt by the jet exhausts)
- cutting the pod and wings to move it to the rear into a canard...
-
That's looking really good, mon ami!
I wish I could achieve such outstanding PSR work like that!

This almost looks like some of the various Personal Air Vehicle (PAV) ideas out there.
-
Thanks!

I did not know that, but with my (future) rotors on the wing, it looks like https://vimeo.com/18289090
you are right, thanks again!
-
Here is a picture of the PEG-38 with rotors before the new life as canard...
-
Then the canard butcher started its operation...
-
I belatedly cut the low part of the fins (not to be burnt by the jets):
-
to correct what I forgot to do in time, I removed with Photopaint the low part of the fins on the picture above:
-
PSR time, not funny... :icon_crap:
-
That's some of the most intense PSR I've seen in a while, mon ami and you are most bravely rising to the challenge!
Cheering wildly from the sideline,
Brian da Basher
-
Thanks.
And now completing the model:
-
Almost finished, I feel happy... :)
-
I really like this configuration Cristophe, well done!

Concur! Talk about wonderfully imaginative!

:)
-
Thanks!
And now the PEG-38 model is finished!
(This is almost a normal egg-Lightning: jet powered, helicopter, canard, bubble-top, rear little wheel...)
-
Through 4 different angles:
-
What a lovely little marvel you have there, mon ami!
Cute as a button and once again highlighting your delightfully creative design sense!
Nicely done, Tophe!

-
Thanks Brian! Your so nice words make me chose my next model (or couple of models*) will be for here and not for the other (old) site...
* : mixed Sturmfire & Spitvogel, 1/144, basis ordered today...

A detail I had not shown previously: the tail wheel (with tiny distance between pod and ground...):
