Lockheed XP-388 Fighter Low Operations Pusher - F.L.O.P
Immediately post post War, Lockheed wanted to get faster with a heavier hit using what tooling they had. By using many of the existing, well tried P-38 components, this aircraft came off the Fingerpainting table.. err drawing board in 1947. Envisaged to fulfill the low level interdiction role, it used pusher technology to protect the engines a little more from ground fire which allowed a fair amount of additional firepower to be added in. Sadly this Aircraft did not fulfill this or any role as the prototype was found to be unstable in the air and on the ground and the only prototype suffered a ground loop and was subsequently placed into storage for a review of the design.
If only they had paid more attention to initials of the Military Designation it received. Fighter Low Operations Pusher - F.L.O.P
Started with a Frog kit that appeared 7 years after me, about when I was first getting into models. Clearly garage time has not been kind to this kit.

After a session of hacking and mayhem, this is the plan at the moment.

For starters I think the tail will get a bit shorter before I add more control surfaces, rudders, etc. Plus every chance it will become a turboprop.
Still trying to work out where I can put some spats in, but hopefully this enough off the Wall, that Brian Da Basher may have had a chuckle at it

Wow that's some Transformation !

Neato F.L.O.P. configuration

A nice spatted wheel under each engine and one under the nose would give a nice BdB feel.
I think you are hitting the nail right on the head with this one!

Indeed! Looking forward to this one

After a couple of small side tracks, back on the BdB build
This is just about it as far as it will go as far as bits and bobs

Token underside shot of the bizarre undercarriage arrangement, which might get some Mig-23/27ish type wheel doors. So, sort of spatish

I like old Frogs - and since I now see that this has two different set of nacelles, it's one more I will keep an eye out for...
This a great looking build so far.

Looking damn fine! :)

This is turning into an odd but attractive looking plane!
Craig - this old Frog kit is fairly nice, and still relatively inexpensive on Ebay.

There are six Frog P-38 kitss listed on eBay right now. Most from the US, averaging around US$25.

One thing I did learn is that my decal stock does not appear to have a lot US markings.
Cheers all

Has flavor of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Wish I thought of configuration. Paint scheme fits XP-388 well. Like it....

Looks very BdB worthy! The nacelles and guns look great! The paint scheme is eye catching!

Beautifully unconventional ;) ;D

And a stunner at the finish! Reminds me a little of some of the design studies for the XP-67. ( I think.)

This is so cool! 8) Wouldn't look out of place in Crimson Skies.

Wow! That cleaned up really well. It looked great before (in a brilliantly twisted kinda way) but looks even slicker in its war paint
