Izumo CV
« on: June 07, 2019, 03:17:46 PM »
First of my entries: Converting an Izumo class DDH into an F-35 carrier.

Working from tamiyas 1/700 kit of the fictional Ibuki DDV featured in the manga and live action movie Kubo Ibuki.

Current plans: move the forward elevator to the side, maybe think about either reducing the size of the island or spliting it in two.

Isn't the JMSDF already planning to convert the Izumo class DDH s into F-35B capable ships?

Iirc they've said they're not going to but that if absolutely necessary they could (even thought it would breach the constitution).

So they are, but they won’t keep the planes on board all the time and they are only ‘defensive’ aircraft carriers. I knew there was some Constitution-bending going on somewhere....

I prefer the 2nd (middle) superstructure model but there are benefits & trade-offs to both the 1st & 2nd variants for combat effectiveness & survival.

Nice work!

Cool!

Have you double checked that the elevators are large enough for the F-35? They look kinda small.

Final plan: going to do the large single island one, because it looks like a logical progression of the izumo hull which is what I was originally going for. I do think the twin island looks cool, the elevator positions aren't optimal and to make them optimal would require too much work.

A look at the F-35s that come with the kit, 10 total - 2 VTOL config - 8 normal.

It is my understanding that the elevators and below deck space was built with F-35s in mind.

Very good
Am relating to this from Mega Carrier building.  Elevator vertical travel was reduced.  Started with twin islands then switched to one.
Looks like you are on a roll now.

Hopefully 1-2 days for hull assembly, 1-2 painting and about 1 day for bits and bobs and done on Friday.

Finished! Finally.

Photo quality not the best as the sky is full of cloud.

Still doesn't have a name though. Thought about naming it Rakurai, Japanese (according to google) for lightening strike - a bit of a pun for the F-35. Or realistically it would be named after a provence or location that just happened to also be the name of a WWII warship, maybe Hosho or perhaps Akagi.

Didn't add lighting but there is space to do it in the future.
