Alright folks, get those light bulbs going! Time to think outside the box!
Ships and boats count too so how about some riverine craft meant to play in the Med and/or Gulf? Maybe you some old DD or other small FF or FAC gets painted up for a special mission? Heck, maybe some old landing craft/ship is now serving as a ferry in the Med/Gulf and has been painted all white, has some massive sand filters, and is full of solar panels and other reflective surfaces to cut down on fuel?
Post Apocalyptic should offer a treasure trove for the Sci-Fi crowd. How about some Mad Max style vehicles? What about some desert racers and sail cars (anyone see Sahara?)?
Civie stuff too so how about some Baja racers or long range expeditionary vehicles turned into Spec Ops dune bugies?
Remember desert camo isn't just tan and brown. White, black, red, yellow, blue, green, and gray can and have been worked in so don't feel constricted.

Sahara 1943 and its 1990's remake with Belushi are AWESOME!!!! The remake can be viewed as a colorized version of the original with the original actors just with different faces.

It's true, and it's a very true remake, but it's really not as good. The acting isn't quite as good as the original, that's for sure. Just look at the actors who were in the original you know why. Also, you have to admit, Korda knew how to frame a shot better than the folks who made the remake. Even the black and white film lent itself better to the sand in the 1943 film. Unsurprisingly, the German equipment and uniforms in the remake were more authentic, but the American equipment is actually better in the original. That should be expected, though, considering it was made with active US units at the time.
More important than any other factor, however, was the music. Miklós Rózsa's original score was fantastic. It was emotional, stirring--an absolute classic. Among film composers, he was a master. The remake's music was forgettable at best, amateurish at worst.
Again, it's a faithful remake that clearly honors the original, but I don't really think it surpasses it in any substantial way.

Was in Lowe's today and found these little parts while rooting through the many parts drawers in the hardware dept.
Grease Fittings (http://www.lowes.com/Search=grease+fittings?storeId=10151&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&N=0&newSearch=true&Ntt=grease+fittings)
They're nice and small and would work perfectly for Sci-Fi or armor builds. They come in straight, 45 and 90 degree angles. Tank and AFV gun barrels jumped to mind. Prices were from $0.99 to $2-3. Worth a look if you're in the neighborhood.
Also found out they have other "hobby parts" included brass and aluminum rods and sheets along with with wooden parts akin to dollhouse stuff but many wheels and other odds and ends.
The hardware store is a great place to find random little fittings that would work great on a model 8)

There is no way I can build these up so I'll just share the idea:

When the Nazis invaded Russia in June 1941 the Russian aircraft companies were anxious to get help and assistance to produce new planes to counterattack the enemy. While Vought was working in 1941 with the F3U, based on material from the IAR-Engineers, Lavochkin-technicians seeked contact with Vought for help to build a new airplane. In a joint-venture structure Vought people went immediately to Russia and helped to set up a new line for the F3U, it became the F3UL! In the autumn of 1941 the first planes rolledout from the factory.
When Roosevelt undertook a great helping plan for Europe and its Allies, Vought started to set up a line in the US for the F3UL, together with Lavochkin it started to deliver in the beginning of 1942 new F3UL-1's. They were shipped in a convoy to Russia, but due to the Wolfpack attacks, one of the convoys was dispersed and the F3UL's stranded in England. The RAF used some of them for squadrons in the desert-war against the Africa Korps. Here is one from 92 sqn. It is the one i send to the Desert warefare.
