Extended Service Life and/or Back Date GB Rules
« on: March 25, 2015, 04:01:45 AM »
Have you ever wondered just how long ingenuity, resourcefulness and plain old desperation could keep a vehicle, ship or aircraft in service? Do you have a kit or project that you'd like to see in modern service or vice-versa, a modern subject you'd like to see in markings/colors that have faded into the mists of history? If so, then this is the Group Build for YOU!

Therefore, I declare this, the Extended Service Life and/or Back Dated Group Build open, and invite all modelers (physical and digital) to come together here in a spirit of whiffery and good fellowship.

RULES:

1. The first rule of group build is: Don't talk about group build

2. HAVE FUN!!!

3. As the name implies there are two paths to choose from:

Blue Pill: Extended Service Life - subjects still in use/active service past their "real world" expiration date (ie: WWII fighters/bombers used as COIN platforms in the 60's/70's, re-engined/winged B-52, war prize ships re-armed/used by other nations, Aegis-equipped Iowa class BB).

Red Pill: Back Dated - subjects or concepts of a more modern bent in use "back in the day" - (Panther with ERA, jet powered zeppelins, Ford Tri-motor gunship, cruise missile armed U-boat).

4. Any and all mediums are welcome -physical models, pixels/profiles and stories (and anything else you can think of) will each be warmly welcomed and given a soft cushion to recline upon.

5. Creativity and collaboration are encouraged.

6. Duration is 1 April 2015 to 31 May 2015.  An extension may be granted, but only a brief one and only if the Moderator (me) feels like it and is greatly pleased by any and all bribes or tribute delivered prior to the original deadline.

7. Physical creations, pixels and stories will be judged separately and victors will be decided via polling of this most august assemblage.  Win everlasting glory and the adoration of your fellow Whiffers/modelers.

8. Any questions are to be directed to the Moderator (humble, me, again).

9. Most importantly, if all else fails, see Rule 2!

I literally have that Ford Tri-Motor gunship on the to-do list. Not sure what historical context to put it in though...

To be honest, I probably stole that off the thread discussing upcoming GB ideas. In my defense, it IS a really good example.

Ford Tri-Motor gunship can also be "Blue pill".   S.E.A. with engine upgrade and mini-guns.  WW2 or Suez or Korea or other.

I have no problem allowing a partial-start into this build, especially if it will re-ignite the engine to get it completed.

I'd love to hear how your engineers hardened AEGIS to take the overpressure from the main battery  ;)

Other than that; COOL!!!!!!!!

Modernized BB with Aegis? I'd say that fits the Extended Service Life concept.  Welcome to the fun house!

Question- does AEGIS reconstruction of Long Beach or Virginia qualify?

(I didn't do either one of the above examples, of course, but those are potential inspirations of what I might do to something else...... I'm inclined to think that it'd be on the same level as Polygon's idea, but just to be sure......)

Well, it works for me - it would extend the service life of those ships.

Other than that; COOL!!!!!!!!

Or alternatively where would you need to locate them to protect them from the over pressure?  Possibly some blast shields could be worked in somewhere.  I recall reading that the Nelsons had an issue with blast damage to the tower structure when the third (Q?) turret was fired aft of broadside indicating that the issue was highly dependent on orientation.

Interesting observation though, need to look into it more for one of my stalled projects.

I actually wasn't planning on installing the aegis, the good thing about the hobbyboss burkes is that the aegis panels aren't molded into the structure.

The reason I asked was because ripping off and replacing the superstructure is not the easiest way to extend a ships life.

If I did add aegis, it would be a mark II aegis:

Well, this IS the Extended Service Life and/or Back Dated Group Build, not the Financially Responsible and/or Realistic Upgrade Group Build, so have at it!

Personally, I think it would be quite interesting to see a modernized battleship, with or without Aegis.

So by service do you mean it has to be military?, or can it be any bit of machine technology, for any use?

Jon, I'd never limit entries to just military usage.  Civilian (private or commercial) would be just as welcome.

The reason I asked was because ripping off and replacing the superstructure is not the easiest way to extend a ships life.

It's been done a lot though. Quite a few warships have had their entire superstructures, or at least bridge blocks, rebuilt into a more modern form.

Ok, I have my incomplete Type 42 "Adelaide Class Light Destroyer" that I started late March for the Floaty GB

http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=5316.0

I had stuff all done by the 1st of April and I missed the deadline for that GB.  As I had decided to finish is with an ASMD mast for a 2015 or later ship, could I finish it for this GB instead?

Looks through rule book (front and back of small post-it note), considers possible ramifications, day dreams about building models and not sitting at his office desk, loses track of time, wonders what to have for lunch...

You are cleared to complete this for the ESL/BD GB.  It both meets the criteria and follows rule #2.

Group Build Extension Requests?

We're under two weeks to the scheduled deadline for this Group Build, and I've had some requests for an extension submitted (in triplicate, no less).

Are there any others that feel the need for an extension? You can reply here or let me know via PM.

Keep building, drawing and writing - I've seen some incredible projects so far.

May I suggest June 21st? Summer Solstice for the northern hemisphere inhabitants. Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied among cultures, but most recognize the event in some way with holidays, festivals, and rituals around that time with themes of religion or fertility.

I like to think of whiffing as a religion and I need more time to fertilizer my mind.

To match the theme the GB would not only be extended by two weeks, but the start date would
also be retroactively moved back two weeks.

I have missed yet another build. the interstate trip didn't help but the fact its now June and I'm basically a single parent until the new financial year hasn't helped.

One day I will finish one, one day.

That really sucks, similar happened to me on the previous build, finished all the kit-bashing, just needed paint and final assembly.  The Haze Grey rattle can ran and orange peeled in places and I still haven't fixed it, not as bad as yours, I can still rub it back and repaint, just haven't had the time or energy.

Was hoping to finish it for this build, i.e. my RAN DDL version of a Type 42 destroyer (instead of the FFG-07 actually selected) from the late 70s early 80s, with a hybrid DDLUP (instead of the FFGUP) plus AMSD (ANZAC Class Missile Self Defence) upgrade from 2010, life extending them to the 2020s or 30s, but just haven't been able to spend anytime on it at all.  Really disappointing as a stack of accessories I ordered from Shapeways arrived, increasing my upgrade options, i.e. an 8 cell Mk-48 VLS and I found a PE SPS-48 to use as well.

I declare this, the Extended Service Life and/or Back Dated Group Build closed, and invite all modellers from across the globe to try their hand in any of the other Group Builds scheduled for this year.

And, as always, Happy Modelling!

Polls will be up shortly and run for one week.  So, as they say in Chicago, "Vote early, vote often!"
