Keep in mind I haven't built anything in about a year or more, I'm a bit rusty and it might take me a bit to get back up to speed.
Kind of thinking along these lines.
The SF-40 Starkiller is the first fighter able to breach the atmosphere and function as a space fighter. It's primary role is policing the near orbit around earth and keeping the strategic upper hand. The SF-40 is able to knock out communication satellites and space defence platforms and still return to earth and perform as an atospheric fighter.
The base model is the 1/48 Testors/Italeri F-19 Stealth kit.

First up, some additional wing area...just looked like it needed a bit more surface area.

To be continued...

Off to a good start, I'll be following this build with interest.
-
Right off the bat I really like your wing mods, Doom! It may have been a while since you've built anything, but it doesn't look like you've lost your touch!
This one's gonna be fun to watch!

Super cool bubba. I cannot wait :icon_alabanza: :-*

I got to spend about an hour at the workbench last night.
I added a pair of fins that are sporting a more rounded shape that compliment the model a little more than the more angular kit fins did, also angled them out instead of in.
Since the tails are now tilted outward instead of in, I had a big blank spot that the fins used to rest on that needed "something," I opted for adding some louvered vents.
Still have some clean up to do then I need to start blending all the new additions with some.... you guessed it, PSR! :o
I'm going to try and sqeeze a little time in the evenings where I can this week...stay tuned. ;)
-
Nice work on the tails and the vents, Doom!
Ahhh, PSR...the whiffer's friend!

I agree, the smooth look really suits it. 8)

Dang, it looks like this is a F-19 GB!!
Love it!

Opening up the intakes certainly is a winner!

ACK! :-\ Greg the kit comes with the intakes opened up before you add the additional parts, honestly I hadn't thought about leaving them open, just hadn't got to closing them yet.....Hmmm something to think about.
-
Happy to oblige... >:D
-
I think it would look cool with the intakes left 'open' as in the head on pic, but with shock cones, perhaps made from quartered drop tanks.
-
beautifal work on the wins and tail, liken the louvers!
-
She's coming along nicely. I really like the look you've given it with the outward canted tails. It just looks a whole lot better!

This idea has "Win!" all over it!

back to it...PSR in progress :-\
(http://www.doomisland2.com/images/models/sf-40/psr-1.jpg)
Decided to explore the open look for the intakes (as per Greg's suggestion) and have placed the shock cones.
Altered the intake covers and added the serrated edge while leaving a good portion of the shock cones visible.

Have some more ideas I am going to play with and hopefully have another update soon.

This looks better and better 8)

Awesome. I really like where your going with this. :-* Very cool mods.

Those intakes look wicked!

Those intakes look wicked!
They do, don't they! I especially like the contrast between the serrations and the swoopy curves of the tail and wingtips :)

Latest bit of progress, first up, the pit.
I was going to go with shuttle type tiles for my re-entry heat shielding then decided to go with some new hi-tech coating instead. I used one of those textue coat spray cans for a bit of a futuristic look.
Here is a top view of it's current state.
A detail of the texture. Difficult to see in the photos, but after spraying the texture coat flat black, I rubbed graphite (pencil lead) over the textured surface and it gives it a really neat look.
I've only been able to work on this for a couple of hours each weekend and I'm running out of time so I'm going to try to get some work done in the evenings this week so i can make the deadline. :-\
-
That is a superb cockpit. Do you do commissions? ;) I'm always very weak with cockpits. What was your impression of the textured paint? Easy to use? etc
-
The textured paint is easy to use with the exception you have to be extra carefulnot to touch it before it's completely dry or it will squish down or slough off. I reccommend letting it sit overnight before handling. This is especially tough for me, I'm spoiled by acrylics speedy drying time.
It may be a challenge to get my decals to lay smooth on this surface but that's what decal solvent is for.
-
I'm with taiidantomcat "That is a superb cockpit". Your wing-tail-intake mods are ideal for that kit. :)

While there aren't many parts in the cockpit the detail was pretty nice so i just started painting tall the knobs and buttons so you could see them, thanks for the compliments guys :D

Well, managed to finish the model by the deadline but didn't manage to get any pics so I missed the deadline on our first official group build (http://www.doomisland2.com/images/avatars/10871.gif)
Will post pics later today in the Current builds section If I could get a moderator to be so kinds as to move this thread ;)

If you quickly take some photos and upload them (or even email them to me), I might be able to just squeeze it in - I'm in a good mood for a Monday morning.
Regards.

Quickly was out of the question, as I wasn't home. Here are the finished pics but please don't make any exceptions.

Sorry about missing the deadline...In the words of Maxwell Smart..."Missed it by that much" ;) Thanks for the great contest anyhow. This is the first model I've built in well over a year and I'm glad I got to play with some plastic. :)
-
That is wicked! You really made that F-19 into something unique. The textured surface is something I'll have to try.
-
Thanks LJ! :D
-
Its great!! The skin is unique and the weathering on the metal is really nice :-*
-
As if wings, fins, intake mods were not enough to make it right. Such a surprise how well the ruff finish looks/works and fits the mission. Never but never would have thought of a finish like that.
Way cool build. 8)

Thanks Taiiden and Finsrin :D
