I like the idea of the prototypes. Especially the T88 105mm howitzer. One future build of that will be of a T88. But I will use the M36 turet as it is bigger.

Another idea I have is turning a UK M10 Achilles into a 25 Lbr howitzer version, and adding an HVSS suspension.

Is the top from an M41?

I have been thinking of adding a T 23 Sherman 76 mm turret onto an M18 for a 1946 campaign on another site. For that,I can always say the turret had lighter armor than the normal Sherman turret.

Would a 17pdr fit in an M-18?

Actually imagine an M-18 with Ford GAA V8, 17pdr, thicker armour and a roofed turret.

I don't see why not. As for the other modifications, that's really getting into the realm of a different vehicle altogether. It'd then need heavier, wider suspension, etc. You basically want a T23 with a 17pdr, don't you?

Not that big or heavy, rather an increase in frontal armour to say 3" and side to 1 1/2 or 2".  Wider tracks yes but no increase in overall dimensions.

Then you want an M41 with a 17pdr? Even then, though, it only had frontal armor of 1.5 inches at most. It was still over 23 tons. The T23E3 had about 3 inches of frontal armor at its thickest and it was about 30 tons. I really think you're looking for the T23E3 with a 17pdr.

M44 Armored Personnel Carrier (1945), based on the M-18 chassis. This early vehicle was massive, and not “squad-size”, but served as the basis for the cold war M75 and M59.

On 31 October 1946 the army gave permission for one of the M44s to be modified to take into account the lessons of the earlier trials. This vehicle, the M44E1, was given a more powerful engine, 21in tracks and was 10 inches taller. Some of the roof sections could be opened, so the side escape doors were removed. This version was also not accepted for production.

The M44E2 was similar, but with the hull raised 10 inches. This version later became the T17 Command Post Vehicle and was used by the USAF.

Hmmm. What would the M44E3 have been?

The M-44 is very interesting. Was at the Fort Knox Museum some years back and there were so many interesting U.S. prototypes and one off's.
Have to check my pix to see if this survived.

Hard to imagine that the Army wanted to stuff 24 people in to the M44.  I wonder how much baggage would have been secured to the outside of the vehicle for those poor souls stuck inside?

There was a fire support version of the M18 with the 76mm replaced with a 105mm howitzer. Can't remember the "T" number, butit was no teh mile of tanks at Aberdeen and is likely at the new location. I have pictures, somewhere, from back in the days you could climb all over them along that mile.
