T-Wing Starwars Style Spaceship
« on: September 09, 2020, 12:17:30 AM »
Hi All

After meeting my Sister and Nephew recently I think I sorta impressed them with the found objects spaceships I had built (or they were just being polite  ::)) insomuch as I have a commission to build a Starwars style spaceship to adorn the Nephews bedroom. He has had a rather  neat custom space/Dr Who/ Starwars paint job and a fancy spaceship hanging from the ceiling would look rather good.

So here's the starting point..........

by Robomog, on Flickr

An old F14 carcass  complete with some extra bits, this was from an evil bay purchase of which I thought I had an almost complete kit but quite a bit was missing, thankfully not the canopy , so this will be an ideal start for the project.

Again this is a seat of the pants build so there is absolutely no pre planning, let's see what evolves over the next few weeks  ???  ;)

More when it happens............

This is going to be interesting  :D

And a commission says more than "just being polite"  ;)

Thanks Apophenia you've got a good point there.

A bit more progress, the base fuselage has not been put together very well so plenty of PSR at the moment

by Robomog, on Flickr

Visualizing this spaceship in a heavy fighter come ground attack sort of role designed to take out enemy guns and radar/scanner/sensor installations so it's going to need a serious main weapon, in the form of a multi barrel munitions dispenser.

The inspiration for this came from Polygons superb Hiigaran Interceptor( http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=8998.0) and will be constructed from empty Biro tubes and a large drop tank.

Thanks for looking............

Great stuff.

Must say though that you have picked, what I consider, to be one of the hardest things to do... make something that looks distinctly like something, into something else, so that the new something cannot be recognised as the old something. I think that is what I am trying to say.

The F-14 Shape is quite good for this sort of thing though. Looking forward to how this evolves.

Thanks for the comments guys and your right, I'm not going to completely disguise the fact its an F14, I'm hoping to ape some of the Deviant Art style pictures where its a futuristic aircraft but they have obviously used a Corsair or Thunderbolt as the base aircraft.    ;)

Incidentally when I was doing the initial sketchy design I was looking to have an 'n' or inverted 'V' tail but every time I test fitted somthing it screamed F14!  Surprising what defines an aircraft. ;D

Let's face it I wanted something futuristic so an F14 is a damn good starting point......... ;) ;D :))

Aaaaaand talking of progress......

Treating the gaps is coming along a treat and I have cobbled together some futuristic engines. The munitions dispenser is complete and ready for painting.

I have also constructed a couple of heavy rockets. They will be hung off the original pylons which I have retained.

Hi all

Got some serious bench time in and have progressed the build a bit

Most of the PSR and repairs are complete, still finding the odd dent and crack, probably going to find some more when I get the primer coat on  ::)

The tail surfaces are on.....

by Robomog, on Flickr

Working on the front, some more offensive armament which will be rockets and guns.

by Robomog, on Flickr

by Robomog, on Flickr

Also added some extra tanks..

I then decided to detail the cockpit as the canopy is big and quite clear

I think I got a bit carried away   :-[  ........

Can’t think of it off the top of my head but there was a Star Wars space craft that started out as part of an F-14.

That's interesting but if you find out don't let me know until I've finished this one. ;)

Didn't they use a shiny silver SR71 Blackbird in the first of the prequels ?

Thanks OW !

My forum posts are usually behind progress but Funnily enough just as I put the primer coat on I had a nagging thought that something was missing and  sussed that it needed a droid as my esteemed colleagues above also realised.

So out came the drills and sharp knife - et voila

20200902_161046 by Robomog, on Flickr

I sourced a droid shaped aircraft propeller spinner and cut the hole to match, as you can see I overdid it a bit and have glued in a thin plastic card shim.

It wont be R2D2 as the spinner is slightly to big for scale, so it will be his big brother R4D4.

I am going to keep the colour scheme white with colour bits, decal design is in progress.

Thanks for looking

Hi all

Working on the details now,

The rockets were looking a bit flimsy,  So I've improvised some supports and exhaust ports

by Robomog, on Flickr

The spaceship needed some defensive armament and crew

by Robomog, on Flickr

The template is for helping me position  the barbets on the space ships body.

And R4D4 is coming along nicely

by Robomog, on Flickr

The decals are ready and once they are on, it will be final assembly time.

More when it happens.....

Decals are on, will be giving it a final coat of Alt Clear tomorrow(maybe)

Found a big scratch in the canopy (aaaargh  !!!!!!!)  So will need to deal with that before final assembly

Should be finished soon.

Hi all

The T-Wing is complete  !!!

Here's the pics.......

by Robomog, on Flickr

The trouble with displaying aircraft with no undercarriage is it makes it difficult to photograph it from the side so I built a custom stand from old CD Jewel cases. I have a router style stand on order for future displays.

Apologies for the backgrounds this model is too big for my photobox. One day I will make/buy something a bit more professional  :D

Beautiful build!!   Erik appears to be quite the willing accomplice as well as quite photogenic with those golden-brown tabby markings.

Parentage shows but doesn't matter as;

a) anything with an F-14 as a mum/dad looks cool; &
b) it looks SERIOUSLY cool! 8)

The only thing not quite right for the Star Wars design style is the canopy, as (to the best of my memory) they're usually more heavily framed & boxier ... but, 'tis a small thing. ;)
