Sell 'em off as COIN aircraft to places that bought other British pop-jobs: Iraq, India, (or more of a stretch) Oman?

A couple of pics of my Python test bed Lanc' and the nacelle would have been all engine, there's no room for a cockpit in there

Yes Greg, Aeroclub Wyvern props (1/72) and Lanc' paddle blades (which the FTB used apparently). I've got a photo of the RW set up somewhere on the computer but do you think I can find it --- :-X

D'oh! just found it --

No I haven't -- that's not it installed in the Lanc'   :icon_bofh:

I wonder how all those might go for a 1/48 application - the Wyvern hub was quite large after all...

Trumpeter do a 1/48 Wyvern, and when I started my FTB I found that the Sea Fury cowling is a very close match in size  to do the early air intake version for the Wyvern.  IIRC, I used an Attacker rear fuselage for the rear end of the nacelle (or possibly the Hawk Swift kit, one or the other)

I've been thinking how you could adapt this to a twin engine Wyvern (or something a bit bigger) but as with my comment on putting a cockpit in there like your 'forward cockpit' idea, there's no room for a wheel bay.  My thoughts would be to do it very much like the Dart Herald set-up, that has the air intake on one side of the nacelle with the wheel bay directly behind the air intake, it looks offset when you view it head on.

One Wyvern was fitted with the RR Clyde, now with this engine you could put a forward cockpit as just aft of the first compressor stage, the engine got quite thin in section

Yeah was aware of that - I should probably have been clearer:  I was looking at the metal aero club props for use on various 1/48 projects as contra props.

FYI, the props are 2 1/8" in diameter

How about a Wyvern with a guy in back?  Set up with the additional crew located in fuselage behind the pilot similar to the specialized night attack and electronic countermeasures platforms based on the Skyraider.

I like that idea, would you still use the jet engine in the rear ?  Would there be enough room for the nose wheel bay though, considering the size of a Python ?

Any suggestions on doing a 1/48 Wyvern Mk1 with RR Eagle Piston Engine?

I quite like the look of this. Combined with tiptanks and perhaps a big radial I may have something....

Greg - any suggestions as to how I may achieve (something approaching) this canopy with the Trumpy 1/72 kit?

The piston powered ones look much better in my eyes. Is it just me or is the cockpit raised more in the later models?
- Could a fuselage back with straighter lines be grafted onto a wyvern?
- Put a BIG radial engine on it?

I was thinking Skyraider engine, after reading about the idea at another forum...

My one that's just arrived is earmarked for a more standard layout, but someone has to do this!

What're everyone's views on a radial-engined Wyvern, say with an R-3350 or - goodness - an R4360 up front, with standard prop? On paper the Skyraider has less HP but the airframe is bigger, so perhaps its engine could work well in the Wyvern? I envisage a re-engined Wyvern as being a real mud-mover, so the greater speed offered by the Python wouldn't be needed.

A "Centaurus Major" perhaps?  A four-row engine using essentially the cylinders from two Centaurus engines much as the Wasp Major (R4360) used R2800 cylinders.

R-4360 is the way to go, the airframe was at least designed for a 5000 hp engine

Because I'm on an F-82 kick right now, have you done one of these like an F-82 ? Think it would look really good myself. I think I would give it double wheels on each main gear and have them retract rearward into a bay between the exhausts in the fuselage.

Looking at those two, it just struck me that the top one has the pilot sitting in the middle of the engine, but you could solve that by moving the engine behind the pilot, with the straight-through exhaust of the second one and side intakes, something like this:

(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d165/hws5mp/The%20Whiffery/profiles/Wyvern%20mod.png) (http://s35.photobucket.com/user/hws5mp/media/The%20Whiffery/profiles/Wyvern%20mod.png.html)

Changes:

Tail unit raised and filleted to make space for jetpipe and tailwheel+hook arrangement.

Slot intakes added behind cockpit, based on original nose intake (they'd probably look like Attacker intakes).

Props moved slightly further back and new fairing added.

The first design of the Wyvern was like that Harold, see the BSP book 'Fighters & Bombers 1835-1950', only it was using the RR Eagle engine, not the Python.  I bought one of those resin Wyvern TF.1 kits to do it ---

I wish someone would do the RR Eagle engined variant in 1/48 - even just a conversion kit.

Wyvern powered by:

R-3350 ------ Kit bash with Monogram-Revell / Matchbox-Revell /ESCI-Italeri / Tamiya A-1 Skyraider for the R-3350 parts

R-4360 ------ Kit bash with the Special Hobby/Accurate Miniatures F2G Corsair for the R-4360 parts

The various Skyraider kits give you some options on matching the engine cowling up with the Wyvern parts.  Not sure how the F2G parts would fare in this but hey, it is just an idea that I had to share.

Funny you should mention the F2G as a donor. I have dry fitted a Wyvern Prop assembly on a F2G with a Skyraider cowling so I have a R4360 available to mount on a Wyvern.

Watching PhlyDaily on YouTube flying a Wyvern in War Thunder (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3vvz2Pvab0) this afternoon and really got to appreciate the performance [yeah, it is a game but it looked good] of the Wyvern maneuvering against other aircraft and blasting them out of the sky with short bursts of 20mm, quite inspiring I must admit.

Two things about the Wyvern that always bugged me was the two finlets on the horizontal stabilizers and lack of a clear canopy behind the pilot.  While it was designed as an attack and torpedo carrying aircraft with the fighter mission sort of taking on the lowest priority for the mission it seems to me that the Wyvern would have benefited from having a full canopy with a view to the rear quarters that was not obscured as it is on the real aircraft.  The horizontal stabilizer mounted finlets might also be removed and replaced with a fillet on the vertical stabilizer, something akin to what was found on the later models of the P-47 Thunderbolt perhaps.

Post by: Rickshaw on May 06, 2017, 11:13:23 AM
I believe the finlets were designed to catch the engine exhausts and have greater control authority for the rudder.   Many single-engined turboprop aircraft had them in the early 1950s - Gannet for example.   I like the look of them, rather British really.   "What?  Need more rudder control?  How about we add some finlets?  Hey?"

Not only turboprops - AEW variants of the Skyraider had them too.
