Title: Convair 58-9

Giving this a shot.

Settled on 1/200 airliner scale. Hopefully haven't bitten of more than I can chew, but we'll see.

Also if motivation strikes I'd like to build the shorter rc-80 alongside and maybe a 1/350 scale on as well.

The double fine on the outboard engine gives it a Thunderbirds vibe. 😎

One weeks worth of anti-procrastination:

Minor revision. I left a tab on the main cross section to help align the tail fin, but realized it made shaping and sanding the rear fuselage difficult. So just had to cut a chunk out and invert it and will now have the tab on the fin itself.

Productive week.

Started with the engines. These engines have flat sides and a bulge on top and bottom, thought I'd try using 2 half pipes:
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48073316887_092f618053_m.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2gf5jga)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/2gf5jga) by BTSpolygon (https://www.flickr.com/photos/159490316@N06/), on Flickr

That ended up not working too great so had to fall back to plastic frame + putty:
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48073318197_9e6a2b8ab6_m.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2gf5jDK)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/2gf5jDK) by BTSpolygon (https://www.flickr.com/photos/159490316@N06/), on Flickr

Better, but then I dropped that and broke the bee stinger exhaust and had to re-do the whole thing again - leaving the core out until the last setp:

Turned out much better:
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48073260783_9062cd9e74_m.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2gf52zR)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/2gf52zR) by BTSpolygon (https://www.flickr.com/photos/159490316@N06/), on Flickr

Not willing to do that 3 more times so I turned to good old resin casting. Using something called oyumaru - it gets soft in boiling water and can be reused afterwards. It's perfect because I only need 4 engines, I'll keep the master somewhere and re-use the oyumaru later:

Lego to the rescue again:

Not perfect, but a bit of sanding and it'll be alright:

Hope to have it ready for paint by the end of the week.

Gotta start thinking about colour scheme now, I'm thinking Eastern Airlines maybe Delta - I don't know much about 1970's airlines.

Beautifully cast engines, BOAC livery would look good.

Great work!

How about Air Canada? CF-SST.

Lookin' great so far.

Particularly like the way you're doing the engines. Might be an option for one of my own bilds. What type of putty did you use?

What type of putty did you use?

I use Tamiya Epoxy Putty (Quick Type), I've tried others but I like this one the most.

Great suggestions - still cant decide though.
I think I will just leave it to an informal poll, if anybody would like to cast a vote or offer a suggestion post it here in the next say 24 hours.
So far we have:
Air Canada
BOAC
Eastern
Delta

If no clear winner I will devise a way to randomly pick one.

This is looking really cool,

I agree with kericks comments, it really has a Thunderbirds/Fireflash vibe to it.

Look forward to the final reveal

it is coming along beautifully!

I have to try the "oyumaru with Lego casting frame" trick. Thanks for sharing!
