F-20 and X-29 build
« on: October 26, 2018, 11:02:17 AM »
I’ve started a double build. An F-20 and an X-29, both from Hasegawa in 1:72 scale. Both are really nice kits just right for easy build while I recover from hip replacement surgery. I’m planning to have them both in service paint schemes, perhaps as foreign sales to countries that couldn’t afford F-16s. I’ll see what the old decal box has in it. The F-20 will be the F-16 three tone gray but I’m considering an aggressor scheme from Topgun or Fighter Weapons School. I’ll see what else the muse might bring me.
Pics will follow shortly as I’m unable to climb the stairs to get to the big computer yet. I’m only using my phone for now.

Trying to pick a paint scheme....
Too many choices.
What I should do is test my decal sheets and see which ones are still good. That might narrow things down.

I was reading an article about how a USAF aggressor squadron repainted an F-16 in a black and green splinter pattern. There was also a black and grey pattern. Leaning towards an aggressor scheme on the X-29 and something Asian for the F-20.

Here's the pics I promised.

The obligatory sprue shot.

Basic assembly.

Basic assembly of the X-29.

I dropped the flaps at the rear of the strakes.

Nose to nose. I have since removed the fins on the nose of the X-29.

Comparison of the undersides.

I've since added weapons pylons to each. The F-20 will be loaded for bear with Mavericks and mk 82s while the X/F-29 will have a Sidewinder, ACMI pod and gas bags. I'm going with an aggressor paint scheme on the X/F-29.

Something you might consider for the FX-29 would be a MiG-21 style gunpod under the fuselage, just forward of the main landing gear.  Heck, grab one from a late-model MiG-21.

I considered that. One of the reasons for going with the aggressor scheme would be to avoid that issue. It’s something I could add yet. I saw pics on another site where they had placed an F-20 nose on an X-29 to include the guns. Too late for that I think.

Nice work. You cannot like building the F-5 family.  Lots of users and options in both the RW and What-if realm.

And if you build in aficionado scale, it does not take up much space on the shelf.

F-5, F-20, X-29 trio even with late 1950s origins are not dated in appearance to degree most (not all) others are.  2019 is first flight 60th anniversary.

That looks very good! Those long stripe decals have to be a PTA.
I painted the under side of both aircraft yesterday. I used model master acrylics. So far its 50/50 wether I like using acylics or not. Coverage is not bad, needed a second coat to get proper color. I put too much paint on in a couple of spots and got these nasty lumps when it dried. At least it didn't fill in all the detail. I'll try some more today.

I've been applying some paint to the F-20. It's getting the F-16 three tone grey scheme. The acrylics are working out pretty good. I've never used them before so it's taking a little getting used too. A little Future and then the decals. The X-29 will get an aggressor scheme but which one?

Painting is underway and making slow progress.

Everything is being done with a hairy stick and much cursing. The acrylics on the F-20 took two coats and worked better when I stopped trying to cover in one coat. I could get coverage in one coat but I had to puddle it on, which led to runs and blobs of paint. I'm using Testors enamels on the topside of the X-29. Only one color has been applied yet, it does almost look like an Arctic scheme.

The X-29 will be a US aggressor and the F-20 a different air force. The usability of the decal sheets may dictate the final choice.

Here is the second color.

And the third color.

Radome will be black. The first two colors may need a second coat. The white did look pretty good. Maybe a future Arctic scheme.

Put a second coat on two of the colors on the X-29 tonight. I might have gotten more done but the drain from the washer, slop sink and kitchen was clogged again. The sink was 3/4 full of nasty water. Time to take the pipes apart and clean it out again. I suspect there is a problem farther down the line as this keeps happening.

Or worse, like some places here in the US have rolled tar paper pipes.  On the other hand, a friend and former co-worker found out that the previous owner of his house had "solved" a outside plumbing leak by pouring a whole lot of concrete around the affected area of pipe.

As old as this house is and the small town attitude towards building codes I’m really afraid of what might be under the basement floor. And I don’t mean in a John Wayne Gacy sort of way. I’ll try the sewer rod first and hope that takes care of it. I hope there is no amateur plumbing problems to fix.

Silver Maples are notorious. Those are in the back yard away from the house. Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm pretty sure it is cased by lint from the washer getting stuck in the drain. I installed a lint trap on the end of the drain hose but I still have to clean out what is already in the pipe.

The city sent some guys around when we had drain problems, they ran a mobile tv camera down the pipe from the basement to the back alley and found ours was blocked with roots, fortunately, just outside our property boundary so they augured it out for us for free, otherwise we would've been on the hook for the clean-out.  The trees nearby were a Laurel Willow, an Elm and a Crab Apple.

Just looking at the decal sheet under that gorgeous FX-29, you have plenty of options.  I've been toying with the idea of doing one as a LIFT (Lead-In Fighter Trainer) for the ASF-X from Ace Combat.  I have enough X-29 and F-20 kits to have fun that way.

That's an old microscale F-5 sheet. I'm using the Taiwan AF markings on the F-20. Good luck so far.

I'm on a roll! Next step is spray some flat and attach the canopies. I'll have to wait until my wife goes to work as she reacts to the smell. I had the dryer running once as I sprayed some paint and the smell got into the clothes. Not a good day.

I hope the white stain on the right wing fades by morning. It looks like someone has been flying real low over the ocean and got salt spray on the wing. It appears as though the Micro Set and Sol has affected the Pledge I used to gloss the paint before decaling. I wiped it with a damp paper towel to try and clean it off but not much help. We'll see what it looks like in the morning.

The dryer makes a poor choice for an exhaust fan.
I have the materials for a spray booth. I just have to get my dead butt up and build it.
Thanks for everyone’s kind comments.

Well it looks like I might have actually finished something!

Thanks to The Big Gimper for the refueling probe. It adds a nice touch.

Only two hours work but it was like pulling teeth to get to it. A little bit of bench clearing did help. The X-29 is very glossy right now but I'll wait for warm weather to spray it flat outdoors. Stinks to much in the house otherwise.
