Some designs are so ugly that they take on a beauty of their own. For example, the Nardi FN.305D:

-
That's because it has good bone structure, as it was a modification of this:

Oh don't worry, I know the history etc. It still doesn't change my assessment.

Just about any French interwar plane will fall into this category:

the period tended to look so thick through the middle:

And some say the F-4 Phantom was ugly! What were these folks thinking? The WWI aircraft had better streamlining.

The French and Poles were following function over form, for the most part. Aerodynamics weren't unknown, they were just discarded in favour of getting the best view possible for what ever function was needed in that position on the aircraft.

I have long been fond of the stately majesty of the Pemberton - Billing Nighthawk.

The Mi-24 Hind and Ju 87B Stuka have always been examples of just such aircraft to my eyes. I always call them "hideously beautiful". Not classically beautiful, but somehow all the ugliness comes together just right and works to produce something surprisingly compelling.

Just about any French interwar plane will fall into this category:
You may know that I am a shameful French man... :(
And here is the French Mustang FP-51B (of mine, alas)... :(

A lot of helicopters, imo, fit into this category especially;
the AH-1;

& the CH-53 (or variants thereof);

From the pretty Lightning, (I dream/fear that) Farman designed the F-238B, A, C Beautning (Beaut' stands for Beauty = Beauté in French), yes!

And from the Waitomo PL-11/Transavia PL-12 Airtruks came the PL-38T, W, X Pretning, maybe pretty in the farm...

That's a bit like the 1920s version of the F-105: looks nicely in proportion until you realise how freakin' BIG it is... ;)

Always found the Beech 17 Staggerwing to be very attractive, http://www.airplanemart.com/aircraft-history-and-specification/photo/l_airplane_image/Beechcraft-D17S-Staggerwing-N18777-NC18777.jpgeven (http://www.airplanemart.com/aircraft-history-and-specification/photo/l_airplane_image/Beechcraft-D17S-Staggerwing-N18777-NC18777.jpgeven) though it should be otherwise due to the stagger.
-
Nothing ugly about the Model 17, why would the reversed wing stagger make it so? :-\
-
Some have described it as weird, strange and yes even ugly, don't agree with them as I love the look of it but each to their own.
-
The Model 17 iterations with fixed gear did look rather pugnacious, so I suppose some could say it was ugly C:-) :

(http://www.airminded.net/stagwing/beech_17R.jpg)
and the proposed pursuit could be considered odd, by some:

But if you put a rear facing engine in the center pod of C, it would truly be "une bete beauté"

That looks like GeeBee air racer had a threesome with an I-153 and Westland Lysander... and the offspring is strangely alluring.

Yep, it just screams early '30s and, like the later V-1710 powered pursuit concept, looks like something that would have graced
the cover of a pulp.
:) ;D

Farman had a big knowledge about push-pull engines, but are you sure these FPP-38B, A, A2 are becoming "beautiful"? ;)

Tophe, thanks - I can see the first one cruising over Tahiti in the 1930s as an airliner.

There's even a song about Staggerwings (kind of): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln_JMeh-w30 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln_JMeh-w30)

Thanks for this idea... well I have posted today palm-Lightnings on my topic http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=22.810 (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=22.810)
but they are not for here, as not airliner and not very ugly :(

And from the awfully big-nose Boeing 707 Phalcon, with my time-machine, I created the GO-38A, B, C Gorgening (like "gorgeous")...
