Czech Air Force MiG-21MF 7701 "Splinter MiG"
« on: February 12, 2015, 08:53:41 PM »
ok I have decided to post a few of my builds here.

I’m not a member of any club and don’t show my builds off in any competitions, so other than another modelling site I’m a member of they usually are built and go straight onto my shelf in my current dungeon/work area  >:( (it’s a ¾ height sub-basement!). They are normally only ever seen by my wife or anyone silly enough to be dragged down there!

I’ll post a few over the coming weeks so as not to flood/hog this area.

This first one was built for a MiG-21 Single Type GB, again using a 1/48 Eduard Mig-21MF as a base with lots of extras thrown in. I loved this aircraft from the first time I saw it and knew I just had to build it! The only thing that scared me was the colour scheme! I tracked down both some decals of the complete scheme plus some masks (now almost impossible to find) and after much thought decided painting was the only way to go with this one. There is over 7 hours worth of masking involved and it is painted in reverse, dark colour to light. Was so glad I decided to paint it, it looks amazing in real life!

Sorry the photos are a bit crap, I wanted to use natural lighting but it was a stormy day in Sydney.

I'm the exact same! This really looks great, I've painted schemes similiar to this and the amount of masking and painting and planning is really massive. Also for weeks I was finding old masks on the bottom of my trash can, shoes, bench etc!

What a result though, this MiG is amazing  :-*

That's a brilliant scheme, I'd love to do one in 72nd 8)
Here's a pic I took at the Sydney Model Show 01Nov2014 of the same scheme;

Sweet paint job from camo to pannel lines :)  Interesting to study and mentally reverse engineer painting process.
Is inspiring to do same with whatever shape sticky-on goodies I find at craft store.

Nice looking MiG. I have that decal sheet in 1/72. I can only hope mine turns out this nice.

I've got the 1/48th version of the decal sheet as well. Think decaling would be just as much "fun" as painting was!

If I was to do this project again it would have to be in 1/32nd scale, the masking would be so much easier.......trying it in 1/72 I think would be a very quick way to go mad/blind!!

Thanks all for the nice comments.

Gorgeous model, big kudos for taking on that as a paint job.

As with you and taidantomcat I'm the same, no club and from bench to shelf; tried one club once in Brisbane and that put me off for life.

You could do it 1/144 if you were feeling really adventurous:

I took that picture at the 144 SIG table at the local show in 2013.

That Czech scheme is pure eye-candy!

I don't think I've ever seen it represented better, and your incredible skill adds an artist's touch.

Well done!
