Rules for Desert Warfare

#1. Entries are to be completed by Feb.28, 2013. Hopefully, mine will be finished by then. No pressure, eh? :o

#2. Colors. I guess this part can be debatable. Please let us mods know your thoughts. I would prefer a base color of sand tan/dark yellow/brown. Camo colors are optional.  Any scheme will be acceptable if you can logically make a case for it.  When in doubt ask.

#3. The build must be what if/sci fi.

#4. Have fun and be creative.

#5. Extensions can be considered, if people do need more time.

#6. Ships and civie stuff are welcome as well.

#7. Profiles/stories are OK too.

#8. Deserts = Sand and rocks, no Arctic stuff even if they are technically deserts.  They also don't have to be limited to Earth.  Mars has red deserts after all.

#9. Partially built models are OK as well just check with one of us first.

I will do my best to watch over this build. I will not promise to be on everyday.

Or another scheme specifically intended for use in the desert.  Things that come to mind are the famous Pink Panthers or blue Matildas.





I'm sure vehicles liberally covered in sand would also qualify regardless of the paint underneath which you couldn't see.



Are those all fair exceptions?

Also, what about equipment in the service of a "traditionally" desert nation, regardless of scheme?  Would a silver IDF bird be out, for example?  I'm more curious about this one than anything.

Thanks for pointing them out. I had forgotten about the SAS pink vehicles. The British also used a desert pink on some M3 and M4 tanks. I can see a silver aircraft,as long as it belongs to a desert nation,or a non desert nation that is fighting in the desert. :icon_music:

Don't forget about the RAF Desert Pink jets in Gulf War.

Those funky Matildas are cool!  Wonder if the scheme worked?

The problem about keeping to a desert/tan color is this writes off a lot of civil stuff (most civil schemes are white) and things from desert/arabian/african countries that may not wear tan.

I've got some ideas for things from desert countries, but I'd like a ruling on this before I proceed.

... But I wouldn't get so semantic as to actually go for something like that unless there was very little white in the camo. Just going to have to kind of rely on people to be in the "spirit" of the GB.   :)

Yep, I have been from Laredo, TX. to Spokane, WA. in the last week and am now going back (I'll try to get pics) It's really weird to see cactus with snow on it :o ???

The Gobi is one of the largest deserts, snow is not unusual and the desert is growing in size.

Deserts are full of colours other than yellows, tans and browns, and define 'desert nation'.
A country located in a 'desert region' or a country that has a 'desert'? Most 'desert nations'
fall into both categories, including the US, Mexico, Peru, Chile etc in the Western Hemisphere.

Hell, what about the Martian desert? We are talking what-if/sci-fi, nicht wahr?

I think we can all agree that the colours issue is not going to be a firm rule.  More important that any entries have some distinctive "desert" connection.

Unless Zod disagrees I'm inclined to say that you can paint them any color as long as you can logically justify it, IE no "just because I like it" answers.  If you have any specific questions about it ask myself or Zod and we'll sort it, no big deal. 

And yes, I know all about snow in the desert and below freezing temps at night.  The fact that several of you have stated this means you're thinking differently so hopefully that will mean some unique entries  8)

Don't make us levy a "no whiffs of mass destruction" rule people (Taiidan...) ;D  Be creative and have fun!  Think out side the box and leave it in the rear view  8)  We want to see a lot of participants for this GB.

You have your orders people, GET TO IT!!!  >:(

2. If something's already started - how far along can it be? I've got something that'd fit the theme pretty well, and it's been stalled for a long time; I've got the interior about 75% done, and have made the biggest of the major cuts to the fuselage. All in all I'd say it's about 10-15% done...

No RW subjects. I say that because this is a what if site. Now if said RW subject was a prototype,but you wanted to make it as something that was in service,that would be good. :)

We are not just a what-if site (though that is the predominant style here) and we do welcome RW subjects as well.  That said though, this is your GB to run so I will leave you to make the rules for it.

So now I'm a bit confused, as Zod said one thing and Cliffy another, re: RW subject.

To clarify, it's an RW subject that most people probably would *assume* is a whiff anyways - a CH-178 (Mi-17V-5 in Canadian service).

You're changing it aren't you?  I'd take no RW subjects to mean say an Abrams in Desert Tan from a unit in Iraq.  Your helo will be different from a stock CH-178 and wearing different paint/markings won't it?

What? Nono. The changes I described in the PM are just part of the big surgeries needed to make a Mi-17V-5 out of the Hobby Boss Hip kit (ramp instead of clamshell doors, pointy nose, etc etc etc). The goal of this build is to represent a Mi-17V-5 as was operated by the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan: entirely an RW subject.

If that's a no-go, then no problem, I'll figure something else out to do for this GB! (and eventually finish building the Canadian Hip anyways. Someday.)

Well, in that case, I'll put here a De Havilland of British Columbia Vengeance heavy fighter as deployed to the North African theatre (will need to sort out which squadron yet based on my available info of Royal BC Air Force units that operated the Vengeance, but that's a small issue). How's that sound?

Well, I just finished my first entry for the Desert GB, but I still need to write up the full backstory, get it exported in the various sizes, upload it, etc.

If I can find a free couple of hours tomorrow, you guys should get to see it then.  It should be the second completed entry following Brian's.  With the exception of the template and the research, I didn't start this until the official kickoff date.
