MiG-23/27 Flogger

MiG-23 USAF DCAM machine.  Unoriginal and uninspired perhaps, but I'd love to have the new Trumpy kit in said markings abiding in Ye Olde Home.
MiG-23 fixed wing prototype.   Wing plan form similar to the Mirage F.1.   Perhaps OKB MiG had a fixed wing project but this would be different.

MiG-25 (Daryl's only open complaint to be seen on this board ever:  Oh I wish there were a new tool MiG-25!!  :icon_crap: :icon_crap: :icon_crap:).

MiG-27  US Coast Guard.

The Chinese MiG-23 lookalike was the Nanchang Q-6.

Hmm, actually the concept of a fixed wing, non-STOVL, developed version of the MiG-23PD/23-01 is interesting:

Maybe take standard MiG-23 fuselage (with standard intakes), remove VG Wing, add wing from MiG-21 or maybe Su-15, change landing gear appropriately...hmmm ::)

In 1/72, build ArtModel kit with lift engine bay sealed and converted to more fuel tankage plus suitable underwing hardware.  Conversion to standare MiG-23 inlets is optional; I'm going with the canards from a Kfir instead.

The thread is typical in that it is the usual plethora of facts and arguing but the pictures show options for things to do with a MiG-21 and the somewhat misshapen HC/ESCI/Italeri 1:48 kits.

Well the Trumpeter MiG-23 arrived today so it was compared as soon as possible to the ESCI kit of the same type.   So, from an Accurist's point of view what is goofed up on the older kit?   Simple:  everything.

That means it's perfect for whatiffing!  :)).  Well, everything is of course, but significant shape issues can lend themselves a favourable jump start on occasion.  At the moment I'm considering scratch building a TSR.2-like main wing for it along with a fuselage stretch.   The older tooling is much more round and svelt than the Chinese kit which would work quite well aesthetically speaking for some previously unknown MiG prototype.

I would keep in mind the numerous comments about Trumpeters goofs Daryl, I've got a couple of their kits which look, shall we say  ""odd"" ----

Agreed with  :icon_sueno: completely.   :icon_sueno:

It appears to be much more like the MiG-23 I was loosely examining at the Evergreen Aviation Museum, however, than the ESCI kit.   Given it has the number of parts it does, the chance of it actually being built have fallen waaay down.    The ESCI one, however?  Well........we will see what the Holiday break will bring.   8)

I've got the ArtModel kit and a set of Kfir intakes and canards and I'm looking to do an alternate MiG-23PD; this will definitely advise its stores load out.

The roundels aren't aligned properly, but otherwise I'm surprised at how "right" this looks. Maybe because it's generationally very close to the Viggen.

Looks very right indeed.  :)
Kit-bash idea: Flogger fuselage with Viggen wings?  ???

Perhaps swap the fold-away ventral fin for  two long strakes  (à la F-8 Crusader) and add a hook for a carrier-borne variant?
