Revell and Airfix Mayflower

Hi all going through my stash I've discovered I have these two kits of the same subject so I thought I would build them both at the same time so we can all see the differences between them.



First thing you can see is the colours are different on both of them.




I have no idea which is right  (if either) but I don't really care I will paint them both as per instructions.

The dark brown is the revell kit




The whiter coloured sails are the revell ones.

At first glance the revell kit is the better detailed of them.

Interestingly, according to ScaleMates, the Revell kit has the oldest moulds (1966) with Airfix being half a decade later (1971).

Revell had a series of sailing ships in "box scale" from that era that were just fantastic. The H.M.S. Bounty and the Santa Maria were in the same series.

Another of the Revell sailing ships that belongs in this category is the 1/56th scale Sailing Yacht America.  A very nice model when built and rigged properly.

If you want to save some of your sanity and remaining eyesight, "Admiralty Models" was a style with stub masts meant to highlight the hull features.

OK so far the Revell kit is far and away the better fitting kit, the Airfix kit is lucky it's not taken an unscheduled flight across the room.

A replica of the Mayflower was built in 1957.  The kits are probably  based on the replica, so there is an issue of accuracy.   IIRC the replica was pretty much a generic ship of Mayflower's type at the time.
