Not much of a backstory here. When I was going through Macchi fighters earlier on my Profiles and Pixels thread, the idea came up of a floatplane Macchi C.202. Perfectly natural notion considering Ing. Mario Castoldi's design background but it didn't seem to fit with the direction of that thread.
So, I've circle back to Macchi again to do up an MC.202 Idro variant. For the MC.202 Idro prototype, the floats are scaled versions of Castoldi's MC.72 racer but with modernized struts. I'm imagining a combination of glycol radiators and evaporation cooling panels on the inner side of each float.
For the production MC.202 Idro, a few changes were made. The float struts and cooling system was completely redesigned. The struts were now cantilevered with coolant radiators built into each strut. In service use, these struts proved insufficiently rigid. As a result, reinforcing rods were applied externally. The auxiliary vertical tail surface was also enlarged (and had a ground crew hand-hold incorporated into it).
The MC.202 Idro would not have proceeded beyond a pre-series batch assigned to the 88° gruppo autonomo da Caccia Marittima. I'm imagining the MC.202 Idro eclipsing the Fiat ICR.42 biplane in Regia Aeronautica planning.
