Title: Naval Airborne Laser
Post by: Burncycle on June 24, 2017, 01:30:51 PM
Was thinking of a way for the fleet to defend against supersonic sea-skimming missiles and thought maybe a greyhound turned airborne laser would be the ticket.  Since it doesn't have to engage at extreme ranges like the failed 747 airborne laser project was attempting to do, and with the advent of relatively small tactical high energy lasers, it would be able to loiter outside a carrier battlegroup along the expected threat bearing, spot incoming missiles with AESA radar and IRST trackers against the ocean and then nail them from above.

Possible consider a version of the laser used for the ATL:

First glance I thought it was a B-25!!
Nice concept. I think it deserves some attention.

The only thing the ABL actually 'failed' on was co$t.
Inter alia, the basic electrical system conversion of
the base 747-400F was one of the projects I worked
on while at Boeing in 747 Wire Design.
Mostly it was removing unneeded stuff.  ;D :icon_fsm:

Bring back the S-3 Viking for this.

Put the laser on top of the fuselage in the same way they did for the extra electronic gear in the ES-3 Shadow.
