Title: A submarine of sorts
Post by: Kerick on January 10, 2023, 03:16:16 PM
My IPMS club has issued a "get out of your comfort zone" challenge. If you build tanks, build an aircraft. If you build cars, build a ship, etc. Since I build mostly aircraft with a couple of tanks along the way and I had a Lindburg Victor fuselage laying around with no wings I thought either sub or space ship. Also Mr. Fontaine had graciously sent my a big o' box of parts that happened to include a sub conning tower. I took this as the universe telling me to get on with it and started slapping said parts together.  A few other aircraft parts and this is what you get.

The black base is the cover off the back of an old printer with a couple of brass rods.
I managed to finally print some acceptable decals using Hayes Paper Co. decal paper instead of stuff from Hobby Lobby. Maybe it was old but the ink just would not soak in or dry afterwards. This paper worked great and I printed extras of everything just in case.

Hopefully it turns out a little like this.

Blue Meanies are not required and need not apply.

There definitely was a Seaview vibe to it.
I’m thinking of putting a deck on the back with an HO scale four piece band. I just have to make one guitar player left handed.

(I think it would look better if the tail-fin was a little shorter.)

I was trying to go with the tall rudder of the Yellow Submarine but it appears to be taller than the conning tower!

I love the look of this 'Victor' class sub  :D  To me, that tall tail calls out for a Soviet-style pod. Then again, I guess The Beatles had no great need for towed-array sonar ...

Fortunately, my old Lindberg Victor is too far along its path to S.H.A.D.O 1960, but what an inspired concept! The paint scheme should be mighty entertaining, too.

That sounds pretty interesting. I hope you get to finish it soon.
Thanks for all the comments!

Very good thinking to use a Victor as a sub. Like what you have done

@Kerick - Glad to see you have put some of those bits and pieces to good use.  That submarine sail was from the rather ancient box scale Monogram USS Skipjack (SSN-585) kit.

I've picking through them regularly to just the right greeblie. The sail fit perfectly.

Here's a pic with two coats of white on it. I want a good base of white before trying the yellow shades.

The fin is about as tall as the sail which is kind of how the yellow submarine looks which is silly in RW but this IS silly so I'm just going to run with it. If I ever take it to a show or exhibit maybe the corrup, ah, impressionable kids will get a kick out of it.

All the parts are here and the decals printed so there is no excuse to not get on with this one. I finally mixed up the first color to go on. Sprayed it on carefully with the airbrush and it looks good so far. Just good old Testors in the square bottles and thinned with lacquer thinner. It went on well and looks good so far.
Might be a little too dark but the yellow will brighten it up.

I used Frog tape for the masking and it worked great! No bleeding under and easy to use. It pulled off easily too. Looks like this is my new go to masking tape.

A couple of band members will get fired. Gotta cut back on labor costs these days. And teach the left handed guy to play guitar.

The left handed one in that Beatles stuff was the BASS Player .

Nice build , I like the engine pods on the tail wings very much !

I also think about FROG Tape as the new solution of the problem . Everything else i have tried works just lala … but there are three different frog types on the market, yellow green and orange, and I don’t know which one to choose.

I think the yellow is for newly painted surfaces and such so it works well for me. Speaking of yellow.....

I know what the base should look like.

(https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.3b2fac75341354ea6a55ea5600d2fcdc?rik=X9XJkotPy8jN0g&riu=http%3a%2f%2fc1.staticflickr.com%2f6%2f5180%2f5523015369_dfa3b742c2.jpg&ehk=W6FfmRY2WX7CvpaCSxu5hxENGxgimz3D1PaJi8CnqoA%3d&risl=&pid=ImgRaw&r=0)

If you're feeling really inspired, you could put the song on this and hide it in the base.

Full disclosure - that was the first song I learned by heart as a kid.

It sprouted a guppy tail when I wasn't looking!

So all the paint is on now so it will be decal time here quickly.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52684095560_83ac90761b_c.jpg) (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2ogvL8b")

I need to get on with this as next Saturday is the club's "Get out of your comfort zone" challenge reveal.  Decals, touch ups, mount on the base and assembly the band.
At least it doesn't look like this thing.

And you Aussies thought you had all the strange animals! Commonlly known as the Tully monster, it's the Illinois state fossile. Its only found in the Mazon Creek Lagerstätte which is only about 30 miles from my house. A very interesting place if you're into palentology.

That Tullimonstrum gregarium is certainly a weird one & just goes to show that there ain't nuthin' so weird that Humans can make that Nature can't do weirder! ;D ;)

Heh. The original was only about two~three feet long, if memory serves. But its very oddness has inspired much, from decorating the sides of U-Haul trailers, to one of the wonkiest theories about the identity of the Loch Ness monster...
(Holiday goes to great lengths to prove that Nessie is a gigantic specimen of Tully monster. Naturally, the cover conveys no hint of this. Anyway, back to the model.)

I’ve gotten the decals on. Couple of touch ups and some gloss then the stand. End is in sight

To me it had to be built as a sub or space ship. Then the generous Mr Fontaine sent me a box o parts which included the sub sail so sub it was.

There is another pile-o-parts accumulating if you want to go for another round of "whats in the box"...  ;)

Could you imagine that? And having in dry dock to paint it yellow?

Thanks guys!
The hull was the Victor bomber fuselage, the sail was the only submarine part, rudder and rear plane were junk aircraft parts, the diving planes on the sail were horizontal stabilizers from an Apache helicopter with all the rivets sanded off, the periscopes were pieces of sprue with a curved end and the base was from the back of an old printer I junked. So I didn’t have to buy anything. The decals were printed on my inkjet printer and the color density was a little thin so the orange and yellow background tinted the decal colors. I’ll live with that.

Still working on reconfiguring Paul’s arms. George is finished painting as he has the simplest costume. John and Ringo need stripes but I don’t know how that will work. It would be hard enough in 1/35th but HO scale? I managed a fairly decent bass for Paul plus microphones for everyone. I need some shade of purple for Paul’s jacket.
