Title: Retro WWII Apache whopper chopper
Post by: Kerick on January 21, 2022, 12:17:29 PM
Here's the beginning of the idea that hit me while I was under the influence of Omicron and cough medicine. No real back story or reasoning other than what if I took some of this and mixed it with some of that. So what we have here is a 1/72nd Revell snap tight Apache attempting to mate with parts of two early model P-40s. Hey, its what I had on the shelf!

Here is the Apache minus the turbine engines, sensors and gun with a new nose job. I'm also going to add a filet in front of the vertical stabilizer and add something to the back edge to give it a curved 1940s look.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51833074163_4c3d84d2c5_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mYj47t)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51832022217_9be8f95a8e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mYdEpt)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51833315734_271f7fd583_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mYkhVu)

This will be an indication of the new general arrangement.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51833315259_a372d8e498_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mYkhMi)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51832020857_606d2a325c_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mYdE12)

I'm trying to decide between a three bladed or four bladed tail rotor. Plus you see the "bazooka" style rocket launchers for the wings and .50 cal gun barrels that will be placed in and around the new nose. Trying to work in at least a couple 20mm guns too. I'll use the pilot figures from the P-40 kits to replace the modern ones from the Apache. I'm going to reshape the main rotors to a more rounded tip "propeller" shape to give a more 1940s look. Gotta have some bigger, fatter WW2 tires too.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51833694985_1b8854e011_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mYneEi)

Now I have to figure out a way to close up the end of the engine nacelles that looks somewhat streamlined without adding a lot of length. Its going to be tough enough mounting the engines above the wings and below the rotors to look at least somewhat believable.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51832019807_835e8803e7_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mYdDFV)

The P-40s are the 1/72nd Airfix kits and very nice they are! Almost a shame to cut them up but they are inexpensive and available at Hobby Lobby so no big deal. The Revell Apache is par for the course for a snap tight designed many years ago. Outside shape is ok for a whiff but I could do without all the rivets! If Matchbox used to have a ditch digger for the recessed panel lines then Revell had the rivetmeister for this one! Which would almost blend in for a WW2 model but the P-40 had none at all! So scrape and sand them away which is what would have happened with all the PSR anyway.

The mojo is upon me with this one so wish me luck. And as always any suggestions gratefully accepted!

Cool concept.  Neat you had the vision.    Start is looking fine.
Had six P-40B kits donate engines to flying wing bomber.   Charge ahead !

I thought about using the Cheyenne but the two I have are ear marked for other projects right now.
Second application of putty is complete and will be sanded down soon. Not much really. Working on pilot and radio operator/naviguesser figures, cockpit and weapons.

Wings and horizontal stabilizer are on. Now I have to figure out how to mount the engines. Drilled the holes for six .50 cals in the nose. Plenty of work to do yet.

Yeah, well that. Plus the early-model P-40 had one of the best-ever looking cowlings!  :D

Those new Airfix kits are really sweet! I’ll be getting another soon.

I’m trying to paint on invasion stripes. First coat of white lifted some of the OD green. I’m hoping another coat of white covers it. Some spots of green need touch up. I have decals lined up just hope they apply properly. Boy, I would so much rather build than paint. Something always seems to not come out like I want it too.

Post by: Kerick on February 03, 2022, 12:32:27 AM
Well, the first version of this is no more. Salvaged some of the P-40 parts and scrapped the rest. The paint job was barely acceptable and the decals were a total fail. Plus I sprayed some acrylic gloss from the craft store on the white on the fuselage curled up like alligator hide! The same white on the wings was fine. Go figure. I’ll consider this a learning experience and buy another Apache kit and try again soon.

I’m fooling around with the front fuselage of an A-10 and the tail boom of a Blackhawk. Major snowstorm for two days and I’m really bored.
Title: Re: Retro WWII Apache whopper chopper
Post by: Kerick on February 07, 2022, 03:45:43 PM
I'm still messing around with the A-10/Blackhawk combo. I might just get this to work. I'm considering British or Soviet markings as I have several of those in the stash. I'll see if I can get Some Spitfire or Hurricane kits or something Russian. As usual, the painting will be the big challenge.
I'm also going to get another AH-64 kit asap. Now I know how to do it better and quicker.
Title: Re: Retro WWII Apache whopper chopper
Post by: Kerick on February 09, 2022, 02:19:48 AM
I bought another AH-64 kit to build the original idea again. Now I’ll have two of those guns from the Apache so at least the gun barrels might get into the next attempt.

I made some engine pods from of all things the A-10 engine! I glued one A-10 engine together and cut it in half then glued the front and tail cone to each half. Makes a nice little barrel shaped pod. I then added the fan to the front barely recessed into the opening. I’ll add a larger “spinner” to make it look like a cooling fan and hide the fact there’s no engine in there.

I also noticed that the price of models seems to have gone up. Supply chain issues or just inflation? At least this one was from Hobby Lobby at 40% off so much more reasonable. The Bandai Mandalorian model with plated parts was $69.99!!!! That stayed on the shelf.

So here are the promised progress pics.
Just some three view of the A-10/Blackhawk combo. This is going to be the British companion to the retro Apache. If I were doing it properly I would be using the front of a Beaufighter or Mosquito. Maybe next time.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51873548510_8e6ae4e52c_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2n2TuJ3)

And a couple views of the engine pods. They are made from A-10 parts but I hope they look reasonably believable.

I'll be using the wings from an Airfix Typhoon Mk1A that I have separate plans for the engine anyway. The 20mm guns just don't look right so I may alter them somehow. Or not. Maybe a big round rudder on the tail too. The Typhoon decals should work fine. For the Apache I need some P-38 decals to fit the national insignia on the skinnier tail boom.
Now I'm going to have to get some RAF color paints. Just found out about a hobby store about an hour away that I'll need to check out anyway.
The whole family is going on a vacation to Hawaii to meet up with some old squadron buddies from the Air Force Reserve days. You may not hear much from me for awhile.

Cool! 8)

Engine pods need a bunch of exhaust stubs poking out the back, to give the impression that there are radials hidden inside them. ;)

Really liking this design.  And the engine pods look awesome!

Yeah I was hardly believing it myself when I was looking at the A-10 nacelle and saying “no way, that will never work”. Then I compared it to a coule 1/72 radials I had and it fit. So here we are.
I’ll definitely add at least two exhaust pipes. I’ll have to find some tubing the right size

Here's some progress pics. The engines are attached and the rudder in place. By the time I was done with the rudder its blocking over 1/4 of the airflow from the tail rotor. Hmmm, cutting a hole and adding a fenestrom tail might be pushing it even for Igor Sikorski and Barnes Wallis! It almost looks like a bomber tail!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51918657803_5727e06c7b_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2n6SG9t)

The F-18 main gear really came to the rescue here plus the P-40 wheels.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51917592142_55838838cb_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2n6Men1)

I moved the tail wheel farther aft. I'll have to shorten the tail rotor blades as they almost hit the horizontal stabilizer. The exhaust stubs are from something 1/48th but they work for me. Definitely nonstandard for a Hercules engine stolen from say a Beaufighter.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51917592062_174028ba87_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2n6MekC)

Just an overhead shot with the rotors temporarily in place. 20mm guns will be in the wings and pods on the sides of the fuselage with six 60lb rockets on the wings. I'll have to cut a little weight somewhere. Maybe some .50s or .303s in the nose too.

Well, this one is just about ready for paint.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51958538862_8335b528c4_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nap6oW)

I moved a pair of 20mm guns to the fuselage sides. It would be impossible to load them under the engines. Not sure if I like the arraignment but I'll see if it grows on me. I might put some 50Cals in the nose yet. I also added carb intakes above the engines. Probably should be bigger.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51958538432_c0a2aca430_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nap6gw)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51960108955_509b9344af_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nax98v)

I also shortened the tail rotor blades a bit to better clear the main rotor.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51960108770_3b61628998_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nax95j)

I used Perfect Plastic Putty to blend in around the engine to fuselage joint. I used a wet Q-tip to blend the putty instead of trying to sand in such a tight space. For the first time using this method it worked pretty darn well.

I had quite a burst of activity the last couple of days. I got the retro Apache out and solved a few problems which allowed me to proceed quickly. It's been very rewarding to see the new version looking better than the first.

First of all I built the side sponsons out a little wider than the kit and much longer.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52020912356_6b3fe95801_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nfULS1)

This left me with an issue dealing with the underside. It sat this way for a week plus before I tried some very thin polystyrene from a cookie container.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52019872007_4ff2ae94e0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nfPrAX)

I had already decided to use the ring shaped sprue found in the middle of the tree the parts come on in several different manufactures kits. I found two alike and sanded down the outside and dremeled and filed and sanded out the middle to make a reasonable airfoil shape. This I cut apart to make two struts from each ring. I made them extra long on purpose and trimmed them once installed. Some Evergreen rod provided the skis with the front heated and bent to shape then cut to length. I drilled holes just big enough to fit the strut and with a little trimming I was able to slip them in far enough to give the right stance. On the pic above you can see how far they fit into the sponson in the rear position. This way they are unlikely to break off in the future.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52021430045_dea28cf17e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nfXqKF)

I sanded the ends of the struts on some course sandpaper until they all touched the desktop at the same time. Adding the skis was a snap after this. I also added some CA glue to the holes as there were a couple gaps.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52021005908_d64ec10a8a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nfVfEY)

I added the wings and engines after all this had dried overnight. I also checked to see if the weapons setup would still work. I'll still add the four .50 cals in the nose and something heavier in the sponsons.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52021167574_d69c6a2fe3_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nfW5Jj)

This is the tail rotor and P-40 horizontal stabilizers installed temporarily. I'm going to use the stabs from the second P-40 kit as these are messed up from the paint stripping. I've since rounded off the top of the vertical stabilizer to give it some more 1940's look. The rings are what I made the struts out of. Came out pretty nice if I say so myself. I've since added a tail skid made from the wire from a paper clip and CA'ed into a hole I drilled.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52020911666_1703458235_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nfULE7)

Just an overhead shot. The engines are the only thing saved from the first attempt as the paint stripping in brake fluid really didn't clean things up that well. And I had extras of everything else anyway.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52020954498_10825f9401_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nfUZoA)

I'm thinking of cutting the canopy sides open. I can practice on the first kits canopy as the paint striping made a mess of it anyway. Not much more to do and then I'll have to paint. Pray for me.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52021429105_aa22f0be36_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nfXqtt)

Here's what I'm talking about when it comes to painting. I painted the tips of the rotors zinc chromate yellow as I think it gives a little weathered and "scale" appearence. Then I masked them off and sprayed the rotors black. I was touching up the yellow rotor tips when the brush touched the mask line. The yellow "broke through" the mask line and spilled out onto the black in this little spiderweb line. It did it on another rotor blade too. Nothing strange about the paints, not old and both enamels so go figure. Just the kind of weird stuff that happens when I paint. I'll have to take an extra anxiety pill first.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52021167454_ef577c399e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nfW5Gf)

So that's the latest on this project. With luck I may have these and the Seahog done in time for my club's show and contest in October!

Paint some of the underlying paint on the edge of the mask. When it dries, it'll act as a seal and prevent leaks under the mask.
Title: Re: Retro WWII Apache whopper chopper
Post by: Kerick on April 22, 2022, 11:29:29 PM
The weird part was there was no tape on at the time. By mask line I meant the little ridge left after I pulled the tape off the yellow after spraying the black. The yellow just flowed over that ridge like a tiny river. So strange. Nothing I can’t touch up, just weird paint behavior I’ve never seen before. If it was flowing under tape I would get that as I have had that many times

The canopy almost makes it look like a single-seater. But still two seats, right?

Post by: Kerick on April 24, 2022, 12:05:01 AM
The Apache version is still two seat and the A-10 version is single seat. Although the A-10 canopy is so big I might have been able to get two seats in there. Maybe one guy down in a “coal hole”.

Still needs a back story. The choppers are going to be a little after D-Day pushing across Belgium and France. Maybe General Patton is so impressed by “this new fangled gadget” he takes them all into his Third Army when no one else wants them. Hmmmmm…  Maybe some more recognition markings on the rotor blades!

Glued on a few small details like wire cutters and boarding steps.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52028085326_cc09048221_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ngxx8U)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52027040907_726aeff5a1_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ngsbEF)

I've been thinking about invasion stripes and if I wanted to do them on both aircraft. I measured out on the wings how much the stripes would cover. At 7.5' of stripes it would cover most of the wing on both aircraft. So I came up with this idea. How about invasion stripes on the rotor blades? I know they did this in Vietnam and I'm sure other places. The white stripes turn into white rings as the rotors spin much like the yellow tips on propellers.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52028085116_c1b02efa3f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ngxx5h)

It's either this or little narrow stripes to make room for national insignia.

If I had thought of it earlier I could have painted the white first but this worked out well. At least this time the Krylon from the hardware store worked right! It was a new can so I’m sure that made a difference!
Now I’ll do the other rotor, maybe a little inboard just to be different.

I've been debating about putting invasion stripes on these two. It makes it look cool but can be a PITA. Plus the wings are too small to have the stripes and insignia too. So I've painted the rotor blades with invasion stripes that would look like white rings as the rotors spin just like the yellow prop tips.

Here's a shot of the first rotors with a set of stripes, topside only.

Here's a shot of the second rotors with slightly different spacing, top and bottom sides. Managed to get some white satin primer on too.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52040932696_404598fa5e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nhFodh)

I've also built a swash plate for each rotor with connecting rods to the rotor blades. Also one wing came off because it was glued to mostly filler. I'll make some spars from sprue and glue them into holes drilled in the fuselage. The Apache version needs the canopy fitted. Trying to decide if I'm going to cut the canopy open.

Now I can try to tape off the tail boom. Wings are easier. Then squirt some on the Apache.

Gathered up my courage and cut the canopy apart. Worked out very well. Masked off the clear panels and painted zinc chromate green around the frames on the outside so it would show green on the inside. The separated side windows were painted individually inside and outside since it will be visible.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52085947534_dff2ba8cb3_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nmE6yb)

Sprayed the Apache with some Model Master OD 1911 and Tamiya neutral grey. Using regular model paint and everything worked! A little touch up tonight with MM acrylic. Next is gloss then decals plus a couple black stripes. I might use some of the Flying Tiger markings from the P-40B kits I used to make this. Let's say some AVG vets ended up transfered to Britain and trained on how to fly these crazy new machines!
The only complaint so far is that the Apache canopy is not a shake and bake fit but hey, it was born a snap tite kit.

Thanks! Definitely better than the first time around. Sprayed on some good old fashioned Testers gloss coat and it looks good. I'll need to mask off the black stripes and spray them gloss black. Then ready for decals. The A-10 version is waiting in the wings.

Nothing a tiny brush can't fix. I'll have to touch up as not even the most ham fisted mechanics would have gotten a stripe that crooked!

The black paint stuck better on the satin white I used as primer on the A-10 version compared to the Apache version which had a layer of glosscoat already applied. I'll have to watch the order in which I apply paints! Apache is almost ready for decals!

The A-10 version will be British so I plan to apply standard fighter camouflage with the airbrush using acrylic paints and silly putty for masking.

I don't know which would have been more of a PITA to apply, the paint or decals but here it is and that's where it will stay.

I'm going to attempt some decals shortly. I hope I have enough in the scrap box. Some of the shark mouth decals from the P-40 kits might just move over to the Apache. I'm going to have to choose a name soon. Apache is the most obvious but was already in use by the A-36 Allison engine version of the P-51. I could use Comanche as the stealth helicopter concept had not been thought of yet. Or a shark name to go with the decal markings. Hammerhead? Mako?

Here's some photos of the Hammerhead attack helicopter sometime in July 1944. All the markings are completely fictitious as I was using mostly scraps from the decal junk pile. The shark mouth is from the P-40 kits the engines and wings came from.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52204761997_6c886d8ea8_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nxa3Xp)

The yellow stripe on the wings is a carry over from the A-36 Apaches. I had the stripe so I thought I'd use it here.
I might add a couple more decals and of course the weapons. Then dullcoat and a little weathering. This idea of finishing a project could become a habit!

Four .50 cals, two 20mm and two three round rocket launchers plus extra gas.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52217098848_de57f031a0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nyfhgJ)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52217088676_5f96492e1b_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nyfefm)

The .50 cal barrels I think are from an old B-26 kit and the 20mm barrels are .50 cal barrels from the old 1/35th Tamiya Infantry Weapons Set. The rocket launchers are scratch made from rod with Scotch tape strips wrapped around the tubes.
The RAF version will be coming up soon. I have to gather my courage and get out the airbrush. I used to be good with it but I got frustrated with the one I had spiting globs of paint onto my models. Possibly not thinned enough. We'll see.

Well, I'm calling this one done! It's been a challenge all the way but I think its been worth it. Craziest thing has been the paint. I used a hardware store brand of satin white primer to prime it and apply the white for the invasion stripes. Nothing else would stick to it. The Tamiya acylics would flake off just sneezing at it. I've never touched up something so many times in my life. Fortunately the final touch up still matched the first application of paint even after gloss coat and flat. So a big plus there. Enough groaning here's the pics.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52518384319_f3338acc48_c.jpg) (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2o1SrWP")IMG_5632 (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2o1SrWP")

A couple of plastic chips managed to stick to the inside of the canopy somehow. No big deal. Maybe they'll drop off someday. Overall I think it turned out pretty good.

I'm late getting here but I'm doing a similar project in 3D. What are the engines for the US version? Are those Merlins from a P-51?

Here's a Chinook I made using a DC-3 as a base.

I like that DC-3 fuselage! Great idea! I may have to store that pic for future reference.
The engines on the British chopper are actually an A-10 engine cut in half and the two fronts and rears glued on to represent radial engines with cooling fans. The earlier American chopper used two P-40 engines from the Airfix Kittyhawk kit. That's what the wings and horizontal stab are from also. The P-40 engines had the radiator intake and exhaust all in the engine "pod" so to speak so it made that a lot easier.
Here's something along the radial engine line but way uglier.

No need for a scale-o-rama for this one. I didn't use any parts of a Chinook, only it's general shape. DC-3 body, MH-53 sponsions and tanks. Chinook rotor blades. The Engine pods are just redone ones from a DC-3 and the rotor housings started off as flat cylinders. Would take a lot of putty and plastic to do the rear door and smooth the outriggers to the body.
