Title: SR-93 - Monogram SR-71 + Testors F-19 (What-If Kit-Bash)
Post by: finsrin on February 06, 2023, 01:39:02 PM
Picked 1/48 F-19 kit up at estate sale last week.   Checked sizing hunch of SR-71 forward fuselage to make it 1/72.   Hunch was good.
Is A-xx for now until determine a number.   Last attack I know of is cancelled Navy A-12.
Be approx 80-90 ft long.
Am testing and adjusting fit of SR-71 front to 1/48 F-19 body.  So far so good.   Maybe shorten SR-71 section, will see.
Also is a 1/72 F-19 kit and another F-19 kit of way different design than this one.   Both were common back in 1990s or so.
Should be working on many unfinished builds.   Most over half done.

That looks like a great pairing between the SR-71 forward fuselage section with the F-19 fuselage.  The extended length may improve the overall appearance since the original Testors' kit was a bit stumpy looking.  Plus the additional length means more internal volume for fuel and electronics.  Something that is quite obvious and lacking in the original kit.

Surprised how closely fuselage width, depth, and cross section match between the two kits.   Meant to be ?
Dunno if becomes attack or recon.   Attack could get nose radome while recon gets OOB SR-71 nose.  Is a weapons bay in F-19 portion.   Seal up or retain.
Yes, extended length does improve appearance from stumpy short range fighter to one with some legs.
Did enough cutting & sanding to place front and rear together w/o glue for basic appearance photo.   Using two SR-71 kits could make front longer.

This is off to a good start.  Those F-19 kits are neat, but clearly don't take into account internal fuel and weapons in those little airframes.

Wow - it looks like it was designed to mate like this. The "F-19" always seemed small to me (both in 1/72 and 1/48) when compared to the F-117 and other jets in the same scale. The 1/48 looks good at 1/72.

That same problem existed with the Monogram 1/48th scale and 1/72nd scale "F-19 Stealth Fighter" (https://fantastic-plastic.com/MONOGRAM%20F-19%20STEALTH%20PAGE.htm) kits from 1987 with the size of the kit making it look undersized for what it was supposed to represent.  Scaling the 1/48th scale kit to 1/72nd scale did help some in getting to an acceptable size but it was still "off" no matter much you tried to ignore it.  The same issues existed for the 1/72nd scale kit too and in this case were even more exacerbated since it scale-o-rama would have to be 1/1/44th scale to make it look right.

There's a 1/144 version from Revell as well! It's F-19s all the way down...

Looked up 1/144 kits.   1/72 length is just over 25 ft.   Way shorter than Hound Dog missile.   Can putty smooth over cockpit and carry as stealth cruise missile.

That works when using the 1/144th scale subject with a 1/48th scale model too.  In that case your missile is a bit smaller and will fit nicely on a smaller aircraft such as an F-16 or F-18 for example.

Progress  --  A-xx now SR-xx.   Front & rear halves glued together.   Doing iterations of putty, Mr Surfacer, sanding to smooth blending.

Several SR- types depicted online.   Will search to find an available number.   Perhaps SR-91 to flip '19'.
Placed (no glue) nose piece on front for in-work photo during filling and sanding.   Nearing end of PSR.
Glued F-19 nose gear door closed.   Using SR-71 nose gear.
Be ~96 ft from tip of probe to tail.   36.75 ft wingspan.   Looking rather fast.

It already looks stealthy and hypersonic.

Agree with Frank on this, already looking ready to go supersonic.

Supersonic standing still. Hypersonic at Vrot. ;)

Life events (including taxes) got in the way of PSR.  Back to bit of progress.   Hopefully near end of PSRing.
Like to reduce appearance of two rectanglish things on top of wings -- more PSR.
Seen here in primer.   attached

If I remember rightly, the "squarish things" are control surfaces, like deployable spoilers, that act something akin to elevons when flying & as air brakes on the ground.

Just amazing how well those parts lined up! Hmmmm......  What if those wings had red stars?

This is looking like a stealthy SR-71! I would keep the air brakes/control surfaces; they look good.

I have or had the Testors/Italeri 1/72 "MiG-37B Ferret-E" - no where near as nice as the F-19, but similarly way out of scale.

Thanks for comments.
Good point about Mig-37B.   Are 1/48 and 1/72 kits.   Finding right parts could scale-o-rama the 1/48 to be 1/72 as am doing with F-19.   Not expecting lucky line up I stumbled upon.

After doing 'SR-xx' searches for unused number am changing this to SR-93.
With non-model projects diminished (Summer over) and needed model room cleanup pretty much done can get back to this and other stagnated builds.

Thanks guys.  Finally started building again.  Doing PSR.  Tentative paint scheme figured out....
